My favorite part of ranger total variety of builds. You can have best trapper/interrupter/spiker/even runner. The ranger takes more thought. My warrior keeps his basic build whereever he goes, but the ranger, you change the entire skillset nearly everytime you go out.
We ranger grouped Thunderhead last night with hench healers, with only one hench dying once. Gotta love higher lever rangers that know how to play.

Last night I was with a barrage group and we finished UW in under 1 1/2 hours. No Warriors at all, our pets tanked.
When people ask for a barrager, they want that one elite skill. You are free to improvise on the rest. Barrager with pet means 3 slots out of 8 are taken. A dedicated trapper needs pretty much the whole bar, but you can take 3 traps along and still have your barrage and pet and 2 slots left over.
I like monks to, but find that when I am responsible for the health of the group, my entire attention is on the red health bars for the entire mission. That gets boring.

I was in a Ring of Fire group last night, and one of the rangers dazed an ether seal. Wow. No energy degen, no chain lightning, nothing. I thought that was one of the coolest things ever (especially as a monk.)

And try using distracting shot against Wurm Sieges. The extra recharge time caused by distracting shot basically shuts these down.
Never thought about concussion shot against an ether seal. When I play with my Mesmer I usually take arcane thievery; there is a high chance of stealing the chain lightning spell, which again shuts it down for a long time period.

In Pve:
Rangers are excellent at interrupting & trapping. Unfortunately, warriors & ele will out damage rangers in direct/aoe damage respectively. This is why rangers have problems finding groups.
Mesmers: primary mesmers are a poor choice in pve. Being a secondary mesmer is a much better choice. He/she can fulfill anything that would ever require mesmer. For interrupts, rangers will be superior. Necros with SS will be better than empathy. Shutdown/energy denial mesmer is uselss in pve as well. Why shutdown when AI enemys are so easy to just kill?
Too many mesmers in pve are just interrupts or conjure phantasm. Which is why most people don't choose mesmers for their groups.
(This is the reason why I had to delete my Level 20 Mesmer. *sad face*)
