How a charcter looks can be very important. Isnt that the point of such things as dyes, 15k armor, fissure etc.?

I don't mind an asian theme, what I do mind is designs that are very reflective of cliches.

I don't mind it. Too much. I do appreciate the beauty of asian architecture, and I sure as hell would love some of their scenery over here in England! Only reason I'm a lil... meh over it is because it seems EVERY game is taking the asian route!

Latest UO expansion: Samurai Empire.
Number of games with 'matrix kung fu style' bullet time.
Jade Empire

Ok so I can only think of a few right now but you know what I mean. I'm quite sure this time next year we'll all be getting fed up with the number of African Savannah games appearing on the shelves.

If it plays well and looks funky, then I'm happy. And so far Anet has done a good job on gameplay.

Now they need African, South American, and Australia themes.

couldn't have said it better. If you want to do it, do it right. I am tired of seeing those pseudo Asian games/movies. With that being said, I think Guild War is doing a pretty good job at it. keep it up! : )

As a side note... i don't think anyone was happy with that movie actually (Memories of Geisha). From what i heard back in Hong Kong last month, the Chinese hate it because a bunch of Chinese was playing as Japanese... The Japanese hated it because all the lead actress were Chinese.

I am glad we have global cultural influences in our fantasy world.

HT ~ I think sometimes games don't port well cross culturally because they are written with a strong cultural center that isn't appealing globally. I don't think Guild Wars is like this at all. As far as Asian games having to provide "Asian character sprites" I don't agree at all. The Lineage world doesn't look Asian and it's extremely popular in Korea, Taiwan, China and to a lesser extent Japan. In fact there are only 4 American Lineage servers (2 Korean mirrors, one American and a test server). There are tons of Lineage servers in Asia.

I'm looking forward to the new content. I'm not worried about the look and mechanics. The Art and Dev teams rock! My main and only worry is not having enough expansion slots added to my current account. That would seriously bum me out.

That the land pays a nod to noble cultures and landscapes and architectures that reverberate distinctly and positively throughout the globe is a good thing. That the characters embrace those who may look exactly like us, or totally unlike us, is also a good thing.

I am very pleased by the look and the feel of the land of Cantha, just as I was delighted in the land of Tyria. Beautiful is beautiful. We should embrace that, for nothing else really matters.
Hard to stop and look at the beauty Gaile b/c well...

Someone correct me if i'm mistaken, but it seemed the character customisation options were fairly limited in the pvp weekend? Like, as if only 1/2 the hair styles/faces, skin tones, etc were represented. Maybe they were specifically appealing to the asian theme for the weekend and they haven't yet presented other facets of the characters.

Whilst I adore the asian theme and culture, and praise the developers for taking it up in chapter 2, as I think it has so much to offer scenery, ambience and environment-wise, I would also hope they have enough insight to see that the characters can't solely be based on this theme too. Afterall, all the other classes (for use of this example) have an asian appearance alongside the rest of our customisation options, it would only be sensible to ensure those who wish to play caucasian, african, etc players would be accomodated for. The option has been there for every other character class, I see no reason to limit our choices now.

It's choices like these that make every character and player unique, it's not a question of racism or anything of that nature, though some of the more presumptious and jumpy/sensitive of us would like to think otherwise, it seems.

I'm wielding a Sundering Boomerang of Fortitude!

Hmm... started as a joke... now an idea blossoms... damages all targets between the user and the targetted foe.... cannot attack until it returns...

A lot of these are interesting points. I just wanted to add that when I created my PvE Monk I tried to choose the most Asian looking face I could... and was sorely disappointed that none of the options truly looked Asian enough. Perhaps this is because I am Asian myself, I don't know. Does it offend me either way? Nope. Just a little disappointed. But, am glad there are more choices for Chapter 2.

Unless I am mistaken the ritualist class has more than a smattering of Araby in the design.

I detected a large taste of Native American in there as well, in the shaman look.

I personally liked this one...

As an added bonus it looks a bit like Andy Lau, however I do hope for a greater range of facial customisations in the subsequent chapters

Aye, I'd like my monk to have a full head of hair - and a cassock.
