Free for all items, should you take them?
When there is a good drop (purple, gold, black dye) assigned to another player and that player doesn't pick it up because the player does not pick it up fast enough (died, was distracted healing, fighting, etc), should you pick it up?

If its a good item and they died then I would pick it up and give it back when we got to town, If it was good and they didn't pick it up, I would ask if I could have it, and if they left I woudl just take it. So For me its both yes and no

The only reasons for picking up a drop originally assigned to another player:
1) He tells you he doesn't want it and you can have it.
2) He has zoned out of the quest/mission and no longer has a chance to pick it up. If this is a friend/guildmate I would certainly find out if they left on purpose or it was an unintentional drop (in which case I would hold the item for him).
Under no circumstance should you just grab the item because the other person was waiting to be ressed or to busy fighting and/or healing (probably to save your butt).
just my opinion
And while we are on the subject of drops ...... one thing that really bugs me is people running around picking up drops while the battle rages on. Please don't do that!

If an item becomes unassigned because the person did not pick it up "fast enough" it's still their's. If they just left it there and didn't care then it's no problem.

I will call attention to such drops since some people simply miss them. If they don't want it, leave the game, etc then I will pick it up. Like others have stated, if it is a guildie then I will give them the opportunity to get it.

Released items originally reserved for a player should not be taken without permission IMO.

I am guilty of that sometimes, although it's rare now. I am still breaking myself of the Diablo2 habit of trying to snatch good items before all those annoying gits running Pickit scripts get the drops.

I pick them up at any chance I get as soon as the person it's attached to. That's how I got my magmas shield. The second it becomes freed. It's technically no longer there's. Hence the term free for all.

And if you are in a prolonged battle and the monk was spending all his time tryingt o keep you alive rather than going to get his loot, or the warrior was body blocking to keep the backline safe, that seems alright to you?
While technically true, it doesn't "belong" to them anymore, you should have the decency and courtesy to not go snatch up things.
Remember that some day when you drop a large bill out of your pocket and then turn around a second later to find someone snatched it up. "Wasn't in your pocket anymore, doesn't belong to you" aka Finders Keepers

In any regular group, I agree with not grabbing another player's drops. And regardless, they deserve a first shot at grabbing them.
However, in the last month I find myself repeatedly in a situation where I'm handholding some newbie through a quest they should be able to handle on their own. About half of them turn out to be leeches.
At that point, if theyaren't even staying in te near area, I'll quietly fiddle around until the drop is free game and take it for my efforts. (then again, I'm not charging anybody for my help either and I have never had one of these people offer me anything for the help.)

Depends whether or not they obviously dont care about it or if you ask and they say they dont want it, otherwise, its still theirs in my mind, I always tell them "Hey ... you have ... over here" if they miss it

IMO, it depends on what the item is. If it's anything of value that a player would obviously want, I say keep your hands off of it(such as an Ecto in Tombs/UW, Green, Gold items). Sometimes, players aren't able to pick their assigned items up, due to fighting an annoying Monk boss, being dead, and so on. So if it's a case like that, it's completely wrong to pick up another's item. If it's a case such as a clean white Raven Staff dropping, and the player chooses not to pick it up, by all means go ahead. It's not that hard to use good judgement whether or not to pick something up. Personally, I leave other people's drops alone no matter what. If they missed one, notify them of it.
My friend was in a Tombs team once, and three people of the same guild(two of them being Monks) were also in that party. When they arrived to the Darknesses, the Monks let everyone else except the three guildies die. So, of course they did not res anyone after the Darknesses were dead, and waited for all of the greens to default, picked them up, and left. Of course that's an extreme, but be aware that [insert word here]s like that do exist, and never allow yourself in a situation where you could get cheated out of your items(Sadly, Tombs is one place where it's easy for that to happen, and that story did not have a happy ending, the scammers got away with it). Always make sure you leave one mob of enemies left before going after the Darknesses to prevent the timer from counting down.
Edit: Along the lines of my first paragraph, I feel that when you see a Chest (such as in UW/FoW, Tombs, SF, Fire Island), someone should notify the group, I know I've been guilty of totally missing chests right in front of my nose.

It depends.
If you were in the middle of a battle for that long that an item became unassigned or moved on to the next battle without allowing them to pick up their items, and then it times out...then I'd say "Hey those are your drops back there"
But...in places like Tombs, UW, FoW, SF...people leave drops they don't want a lot. I will pick those up. Because after 30 minutes of running around and you still not picking that up, I'll take it and salvage it, its obvious you don't want it, and everyone else could put some better use to it.

My biggest complaint is: -
Player X: Res Please [while battle continue]
Player X gets ressed at a safe distance from the battle
Player X charges into the battle to pick up his obsidian shard
Player X dies
Now I dont know if 4k is alot to some people these days but players dying to get the drop and getting another 15% dp does not seem worth it.

Ya you sound like a barrel of fun to play with, your ign is what(oh nevermind its right in your profile, thx) !
I hate people who do that they are the lowest of the low, the above is probably one of those people that will leave people dead on the ground so he can grab all their drops when they 'become' free for all, bullshit buddy, you suck you get put on the ignore list forever so Ill never see your name in game.
Back when I was a little less experienced, there were a couple a occasions where I happenjed to be lying on the ground dead while there was a nice drop lying there for me, well two times that I recall, we were on the fire islands, and sometimes it takes a minute or two to reassemble the team, well twice I specifically stated that I wanted the drop and when the timer ran out if its taken by someone I'm leaving, Im not leaving it to chance, drops are rare enough in this game that you shouldnt have to worry about assholes like the above poster, well in the one case no one touched said item, and in the other case some tit grabbed it up the minute it was available, so I told him if he wanted to complete the mission he was handing over said item, as we were allready down to 7, and the rest of the team started ragging on the idiot, and he relented, first making a big deal, and trying to make me feel bad by minimising it, 'oh what a baby its just a freaking drop', I didnt really care, and Ill do the same thing today. I play a lot with pickups, lower levels helping them out, and I give tons of stuff away, Im not greedy in the least, but it just burns me, when people take drops that were not assigned to them, I think they should make the timer 10 minutes, or even permanent. Doing a mission with a monk Im working on, mission was Nolani, and one of the group left a blue dye right at the beggining, like Im so rich right, oh well its his loss, what do I care, so on we go, get to just before the first cut scene, and theres only 3 of us, wheree the other guy ? Hes running back to the beggining to get the blue dye, WTF. We ended up waiting for five minutes for him, he got lost etc etc... If there was no timer this kind of thing would never happen again. Funniest thing, the next drop, I kid you not for the runner was a blue dye......

Now that I think about it, I did snatch someone else's drop once. We had a leech while doing Dragon's Lair. After he did nothing in the first 2 sections, our group decided to begin the third by luring the enemies to him to start racking up his dp in case he decided to return. Anyway, he stood there, took the pommeling and died. Then we killed the enemy who dropped a gold, which, of course, was assigned to the leecher. Someone rezzed him and he picked it up immediately! He wasn't even afk, just greifing/leeching, apparently.
On to level 4: We got him killed again, but this time left him dead. Again he got a gold drop, which noone seemed to notice. Another player also got a gold drop that he didn't notice either. I said, "Hey, Player X, you have a gold sword back there." "Wow, thanks, I didn't see that," he replied. "Dead Leecher has a gold axe over there too," I said. "Lets go spam click it until it unassigns and see who gets it." I got it, but passed it along to the warrior in the group.
Is that wrong or acceptable?
