Things that I LIKE about Guild Wars...
I've come to realize that a lot of my threads have been pretty negative, so I thought I'd cut the developers some slack and expound upon some of the things I think they do really well...and maybe encourage others to do the same. I definitely have a few things to add to the hate list...but that can come after I've bought some brownie points with this one
I'm not sure if there's another thread on this topic...but it's not like another will hurt all that much
1. The Graphics. Hands down, the best of any MMORPG I've played. Not too cartoony, very imaginative...I didn't post on the "my favorite places" post, but I love the part where you get the bonus item in the Gates of Kryta mission. Reminds me of time that I spent in Okinawa when I was young, with the tidepools and such. Just awesome
2. The balance. Although there is much room for tinkering, the fact that there is such a system in place, and that it's constantly under maintenance, is a good thing. Good logic breeds good science...and from this foundation, only good things can come.
3. The music. I write electronic music, and I'm damn good at what I do. I'm extremely picky about anything that I listen to--but the vast majority of the music in this game does well. It sets the tone when it needs to, and hovers lightly in the background when it has to. Very well done.
4. The travel. This one is a no-brainer. So much time saved.
5. The tracking. I like how I can hold down Alt, click on someone's name, and kick back.
6. The Henchmen. Sometimes I just don't feel social. Although there is definitely room for improvement, the fact that I can grab a group of henchmen and go is quite a convenience for me, and has probably saved a few people from getting their heads bitten off.
7. There are others...I'm on the tail end of a long night. Feel free to chime in, I'm sure ANet won't mind

Great post! I agree with everything you said. Another thing that's great is that you can leave the game for 6 months and it's still really quick to get back into it and compete again.

All of the above, plus:
Replayability. I got my money's worth out of this game within the first month of owning it. And unlike other MMOs that require a subscription, or alot of single-player offline sort of games that don't last nine months or more, I'm still getting alot of play from this one. For free.

how about no monthly fees as a big bonus? i quited wow because of that and because it became partly unplayable after the honorsystem got installed and you got killed every 5 minutes in some regions.
i havent tried pvp in GW but i already like the idea of seperate pvp regions. those areas created outside the outposts and citys are pretty cool to. it is so graet not to have other players kill the mobs you need for quests...
next points: quest -> they are pretty good too. there are a few quest that a dull, but most of them are exciting and dont include stupid kill x-times monster y, or bring me x-times item y (wave at wow) quests
story -> this game has actually a good story behind it and you can pursue the storyline whenever you want and even do missions in a different order. how about that for a big plus?
the skill and attribut system is pretty damn sweet too. not like being a fire caster? switch ponits to ice magic and let loose some icestorms. great.
and appart from the already mentiont great graphics i would like to mention the best looking game characters. god, do most of the female charas look sexy or dont they? i mean i know its just a game, but its nice to be in a city and enjoy the view sometimes if you know what i mean *g* (and i thnik that you could probably write the same thing about the male characters, but i will leave that point for someone more suitable to comment on )

At a 50 dollar expansion every 6-8 months and most people needing two, for both accounts, the game ends up being about 8-12 dollars a month.

i like it because new people to the game wont feel inferior when they come to presear ascalon for the first time. no max lvl people ruining their first experience by trying to sell stuff for 100k ect..
as some of you may know, when you are very new to a game you tend to get choked by info when you first play it because of the mayham that surrounds. in GW you come into an area where the only real objective is to learn how to play. besides the occasional prick, even the people in presear who are just getting another character thru are helpfull and dont call people noobs for asking simple questions

Damn STOP calling it a EXPANSION its not a expasion its a chapter and you dont have to buy anything if you dont want toooo. were can a Expansion work without the main game? think plz.
There are loads of things that i like about this game, but i have to say the close world were you only meet people in town and not outside, tired of games were people just follow to then get the drops etc...

The skill system, it still needs a little work but no other game really comes close.

They split their team in two. Each er... (I was going to say expansion) new chapter will take one year to produce. IIRC Anet said they started work on C3 roughly 6 months ago.
Also, I can't link directly because it's on another GW forum but it was a translated interview with Cofunder of Anet, Jeff Strain. The good bits...
Why is there no built in (team) voice chat?
JS: We are working on it right now. We should be able to include it soon.
From what you told during the show, we can hope for a third chapter in 2006?
JS: Yes, nothing is ever sure as far as development is concerned but we want to release the third chapter by the end of this year.
Even if you can't be too specific on this point, is it reasonable to expect new professions in this third chapter?
JS: Yes. Actually Factions can be seen as an example of what future releases will look like : new professions, new areas to explore, new kinds of missions for PvP as well as PvE, technology improvement, new game mechanics.

1. No monthly fee
2. Story line based
3. Streaming updates that don't make me wait 2 hours when i want a fix
4. Graphics (i.e. my perky monk!)
5. 8 skill slots means I have to put some thought into my character before I zone into mission, instead of "meh, that didn't work and swapping skills nilly willy
6. Farmage!!!!!
7. PvP, for the most part.
8. Droks armor stats are just as good as FoW armor, so there is no physical reason to keep farming for the uber phat lewt; just asthetics.
9. A Dev staff that actually listens to players, instead of just supplying lip service to serious issues/much desired content*cough*Sony Online Entertainment*cough*
10. Added content at no cost. If I had to pay for SF I'd have hit the road.
11. Henchmen. It's rare to find a game where you can truely say "I can solo everything if I try." Here, you pretty much can.
12. They kept their word. A level 20 thats been playing for 2 months can be competitive with a level 20 thats been playing all year. Skill is important here much more than time played.

I came from Diablo 2 when Guild Wars was released a year a go, and it was a fairly smooth transition for me. The main reason is because you can only meet people in towns and outposts and have to party with them there.
It was similar in Diablo 2 because there were lots of small private games within the larger game. This made it very easy to meet people and make friends.
When compared to World of Warcraft in the fact that the world is an open environment, I felt lonely playing WoW most of the time because it took for ever to get places and meet people. Even if your in a guild its lacking do to the fact that you can't quickly zone to an area to party up with your guild mates.
GW music is very nice.
Graphics are awesome, except for the cut scenes for mission (they seem like an after thought). Its funny because Diablo graphics are 800x600 and sucked hard, but the Diablo cut scenes are beautiful to watch. Why can't we have both! I want a beautiful game w/beautiful cut scenes!
The way you can combine skills and stack skills to work with each other in GW is extremely good. Plenty of combinations to play around with as long as you have an open mind to new ideas.
The weapon and item choices are okay, but are lacking due to the balance requirements for PvP. Coming from Diablo 2, I miss the mass quantity of items you can choose from with sets and rune word items you could make. But I understand the skill balancing and pvp issues for GW and accept it. Maybe some new mods and stats will be incorportated with factions to make me happy. I'm getting tired of +15%^50 being the best damage mod accepted for a weapon in the trading circuit, it shouldn't be this way.
I enjoy farming!
I enjoy running!
I've had Guild issues and don't have as many friends as I once did now that I'm in a new guild, it sucks being the new guy.
Bring on Factions!

I enjoy everything I feel like enjoying. Farming... Playing mind games with idiots... Annoy people who only want to be "WIN WIN WIN" in random PvP.
Yep, I enjoy the simple things in life...
