I agree with Lighting Hell. Newb and n00b are 2 totally different words with different meanings. A newbie is simply a person new to the game and learning the game, an experience i don't like to take away from players (ie by giving them free runs past/to places they know nothing about). Whereas as a n00b is an ignorant know it all who actually knows very little but too clever to listen when someone is trying to direct them.
As for aggro happy newbs/n00bs....i call them kamikaze's....they get left to die and Rez'd after the area has been cleared properly. I'd rather leave them to die and do it myself than let them get my whole party killed, hence i NEVER use warrior hench and avoid using any warriors for any mission if i don't know them. I'd rather have 1 less party member for anything than an inexperienced kamikaze warrior who doesn't understand the concept of pulling groups apart and how big the difference is from fighting 1 group against 2 or 3. Surely if i know exactly whats around the next corner and when to stop and wait for patrols etc my instructions are worth following if your experience involves already having tried and died several times on a mission. On the other hand i love newbs who happily follow instructions and praise your leadership at the end. At the end of the day every group needs 1 leader to guarantee success, even if you are reasonably experienced, if some god like player joins to help let them lead, you have nothing to loose from completing a mission/farm successfully and learning a trick or two, and again every group needs 1 leader only...they lead you to victory or death!!
In conclusion:
newb = new player <--- should be given some respect and time to understand instructions given
n00b = a player who should know better <----- don't call low level chars this, if anything its an arrogant term to use and the name caller often looks worse than the player its directed at
oldie/olbie = player who has been around from the beginning of the game.
Lots of variations inbetween newbie and oldie. Godly and Pro seem popular terms on GW....not sure how you define these, but sure a proper definition would take away 90% of the people who think they are

Wow...
I agree with the OP that people need to stop using the term. I was in Sorrows Furnance last night with a tank that had not been there yet. He had not done "gear tanking" before.
Myself and a guildmate coached him through the process... he did a fantastic job. He got THREE green drops and one of the other people in the party, a necro who must go nameless, said, "that damn noob is getting all the green drops". Our tank was offended... we were done with the farming run and wanted to complete the Oro quest... without a gear tank that wasn't gonna happen. Our Tank said he was going to drop because he was offended. My guildmate and I asked him to stay -- as six other people had not used that offensive word. He stayed and we finished the mission.
After the mission he and I talked. His guild of sixty had never offered him any help at all. He was very thankful for the assistance (training) he received and asked if he could join our guild; we invited him.
Now my guild will get him experience in areas he has not been in and give him tips.
Some of you "my crap don't stink" people seem to forget that you once had to have your arse wiped for you... and you will again.

When I started, I was in a tiny guild of RL friends, all of us who had just bought the game. I learned all the basics among other equally clueless people (henchmen? what are those!) So no, your statement is a little inaccurate.
Agree, that tank was a newbie and not a noob.

No, it isn't. It'll get replaced in a couple of years by a new word, just like "lamer" got replaced by "noob" when lamer ceased meaning anything - just like noob is now...

I hope that you are wrong and my statement is correct. I certainly wish you a long life... and if that is the case I am sure that one day when you are very, very old you will again need someone to wipe your arse.

Often times people screaming "noob" are noobs themselves and are simply deflecting blame or trying to sound like they know what they're doing. That's been my experience anyway. Most of the time the person calling someone a noob is an idiot and has no idea what they're talking about. I don't use the term myself for the reasons I've already stated.

Your statement is wrong for quite a few reasons.
1) There are no PHYSICAL differences between an elite player and a new player. Unlike in real life, where money, job, social class, age are an issue, a player, by gaining knowledge, can be as good as anyone else. It is for this reason you can exist solo as well as grouped.
2) The players posting here are all fairly experienced. If I'm doing something that could be improved in-game, I'd expect it corrected, thank you. And who better than the experienced people to correct others. Unfortunately, most revert to calling people that simply are lower in knowledge 'noob' which is incorrect. There is no term for someone who is simply unaware of certain things. 'Newb' can only refer to someone new to the game.
3) My statement is correct. I learned basics with other newbies. While people did help me learn later, I didn't ask them for knowledge. I learned by joining groups and acting intelligent until I had seen enough to be intelligent. I do not recall ever being called a noob in a mission or group (except once when I declared that using book was lame) simply because noob is generally defined by a player's attitude. If you can show a strong front, then you won't be called one...
4) You're acting bitter, and lashing at me. It's amusing, but stop it.
In finishing, unless in extreme cases of poor attitude (1 person lashing against the ENTIRE group and being directly responsible for huge errors after advice), I don't call people noobs. I define them as that, but I don't have to insult them that way. And the thread is mainly about abolishing usage, not abolishing the word. Because we'd still have a term to define an idiot, noob is just the flavour now.

Probably by something even more offensive that people can get their panties in a wad about. Me personally I'm just going to start tossing random words in instead until one catches on. Like Sockmonkey rapist or something like that. Eventually I'll find one that will catalyze the entire community into action. I mean who likes being called a sockmonkey rapist? LoL. Seriously though whatever happened to sticks and stones? Are we all still in third grade here? Oooo you got called a noob or someone else got called a noob. If that is the worst thing that ever happens to you in your life then you lead a charmed life. As far as insults go it's not that offensive or that bad. I see at least one new thread a week about noob this or noob that with whining all around.

Here's my idea. Can we please stop making threads to complain about this? The more attention that is paid to it the worse it gets. The only reason such a ridiculous word is even considered insulting is because people like you keep on getting your knickers in a twist about it. Just stop reacting and the word looses it's power.

Personally I like being called a sockmonkey rapist (oh those sock monkeys) you chunk monkey lol.
Originally I was trying to make a point that I think has been proved many times in here. The majority of players on the game are 18+ I think and pretty much all the elites are so why does it continue? Is guild wars a primary school playground or a place where people can meet co-operate and achieve something. There is no race colour or creed in guild wars so to replace the shitty underbelly of society like racism and sexism we create new words to create a rift. I guess its all about superiority.
Point noted and learnt about newb and n00b. Very rarely see newb used though now
(previous statement retracted I will post if something intereting pops up)

You make me laugh.
Bitter towards you... NO.
I think you don't understand the statement I made...
You told me my statement was inaccurate.
the statement you took issue with was:
Quote:
Some of you "my crap don't stink" people seem to forget that you once had to have your arse wiped for you... and you will again.
|
That statement will be true if you live to a ripe old age.
You see you were born... I am sure you parents changed your diapers and wiped your butt.
When you get very, very old you again end up wearing diapers and people have to wipe your butt again.
The statement you objected to has nothing to do with the game.

I prefer the classic term, "idiot," myself. Though when trying to point out and explain why something is a bad idea, I avoid calling them idiots to their faces. It doesn't exactly make them more receptive to your explanation, you know?
I always enjoy using /laugh when someone resorts to calling me a noob in response. That tells me two things: One, they're too stupid to offer any explanation for their actions and must resort to name calling instead, and two, they'll continue to fail miserably at the game. Which is punishment enough in my eyes. And it's also funny when they tell me to leave and then ragequit themselves--I just take any drops they've left behind.

It is a negative term but in gamming, it's going to stay or be replaced by another term that means the same thing.
Me personally, I don't call people noob or any variation and ignore it completely (calling me a noob sticks like water on a rock )

The problem isn't in the word, it's in the people who use the two improperly. A single mistake doesn't warrant either. Newb is not an insult, it's simply a descriptive to say someone is new to the game/area/character type.
Noob on the other hand is a direct insult towards someone who is all of what my first post held. An arrogant, unlearning, idiotic player that refuses to improve when offered advice.
