Interesting. They have 3 nations, but only 2 factions? Something sound off?
Canthan, Luxon and Kurzick?

Or is there another nation, and Cantha is considered the land (like Tyria?)

Or, are the Kurzicks and Luxons even considered "nations", or are they just sub-groups of Cantha?

So many questions... (I notice Anet uses "Asian-inspired" to describe Factions, so that's what I'll call the Canthan designs!)

I thought Cantha was the region.

Luxon and Kurzick are the factions.

But then again, perhaps there is a neutral faction that's not involved in the Luxon/Kurzick feud.

Urgh, the waiting is just too much. I'm thinking of taking Friday off just to enjoy Factions.

Now, if only I could convince ANet to give preorders an entire week in advance to play so I wouldn't have to wait so long.

Remember, there are three factions in Cantha. Only 2 are at war.

You guys realize that all you have to do to change sides is lower your faction to less than the other side's faction right?

It takes like 5 seconds at the faction trading npc, you can go from luxon to kurzick or kurzick to luxon just like that
what's the big deal

and i suppose if you waste all your faction on both sides, and are guildless then it is possible to be neutral, but that's very unlikely due to the math, faction earned isnt always rounded out

what?

i'm saying if you're on one char and finished with say, the kurzick quests etc and want to do the luxon ones with the same char, just go blow your faction at the npc

As it already says in the game, using factions points on either side will make you lose points on the opposite side.

What I'm wondering, though, is whether NPCs' reactions to you depend on your current faction or your total faction. If you notice, it tracks the total amount of faction you've earned (mouse over the faction bars), so I'm wondering if it's really as easy as spending all your current faction for one side, then immediately switching to the other and earning a bit of faction. If you've gotten 100,000 total Kurzick faction, but only 10,000 total Luxon faction, then switching to Luxon might not be so easy.

This problem would also be compounded by the fact that the faction is tied to the account as a whole and not individual characters. (Unless they change it from the FPE.) If you play a couple characters one way, then decide you'd like to make another to play the other side, that would be really hard.

Personally, what I'm hoping for is that you can do something like those "Befriend the ______" quests we saw in the FPE multiple times. Or in other words, I hope we can just earn 10,000 faction for a side, then redeem it at a special NPC to switch to that side regardless of our total faction amounts.

well, I was noticing that in Guild Hall, there's already the ability to choose either Kurzick or Luxon, but I was reading and they said that the individual's alignment is determined by their redemption of points. At least, that's how I understood it by what the game says when you mouse over the points.

The NPCs in the guild halls are for entering alliance battles and redeeming faction for alliance standing. (Or at least that's all they were for in the FPE.) I don't think they themselves have much to do with choosing sides.

They dont, the npcs check your CURRENT faction
while using faction will make both factions go down, the other side doesnt lose anywhere as much as the one you're using
besides, if really really needed, just join 1 alliance battle or mission battle to push it over a little

So....
If your Guild chooses a faction and you pref to side with the other faction, do you need to leave the guild or can you switch for your account only then?

Essentially, if you can't choose the faction YOU want (or stay neutral) while in a Guild, that'd stink.

xenorager is real correct about the term oriental, but it still has derogatory connotations as it was used as a encompassing term for people of a variety of ethnic backgrounds from a variety of different regions that white people designated to them because, frankly, white people at the end of the 19th centyr didn't care.

Well....
IMO, people need to get over it. It's like you can't say "Black American" anymore, you have to say "African American". Every other race (except caucasians) have politically correct terms that can be used to note their race or anything else about their background origins. I don't care for political correctness, but some of it doesn't make sense at all.

IE: using the term Asian could mean anyone from the former USSR to as far east as Japan. It's a stupid term and does the exact same thing that "Oriental" did. You have an even further range of people who are from asia and being grouped into the same category. For that matter, you have "Latino" as another one. Do you know how spread the latinos are? We're talking global, not just regional.

N E Rate....
You could argue racial symantecs as much as you want, but truth is that anytime you create a label, there will always be people mislabeled within that group.

BTW...
Funny story. I had an "African American" manager. She was from South Africa (where the majority of the population is white.) Because of her origins, she claimed African American, but people interviewing her would always expect a black person to come in, but instead they get her. I guess there are always loop holes to every label/stereotype/grouping. Go figure.

Sorry for the corrections, I'm in a mood today.

You can be Neutral, ie, not on anyones side. You could be a mercenary, selling yourself to the highest bidder. You could be against both sides, and want to kill both the Luxons and Kurzicks.

They're are many, many more options than just "pick a side and fight."

Now, whether any of these options are viable in the Game remains to be seen...
