3 of my 4 characters are female. I can't be a Mesmer, Warrior, etc. in real life but I can in GW...so why not go the whole way and be female as well. I suppose I could go for the operation in real life, but hey, lets not get carried away.
Also, the female characters looks much better than the male ones and I need some eye candy while playing the game.

I have 1 female elementalist and 1 female ranger.
The armor on those just looks better then on the male version.
Only when i use teamspeak (when i play with guild mates) its kind of weird because they adress me with the female name, Sira or Lana.
And my voice just isn't really feminin, so its allso a little weird for them when lana speaks to them with a heavy voice

Why anyone would care if a guy plays a girl is beyond me. Do you plan on hitting on girls while you play this game? Some people (myself included) would rather stare at a girl all day than a guy.

I'm not sure I equate the two at all. One nimrod in an ex-guild thought it funny once to annoy with the character /emotes and liked to get close to my toon in the Guild Hall. And help, even handouts = respect? Going x times through the game I'd just as soon be left to it myself.
I got it thanks.
Actually that's one of the reasons all of my toons since my elementalist have been male, I don't need the kiddie attraction factor. Though curves from the 3rd person is nice, I'll just as soon play as the other avatar at this point.
Funny in Everquest it wasn't an issue, but then I played with more serious, older players. My two cents. Otherwise I have the same view as CHunterX, above.

While i agree with most of the views up top, I find being attracted to a computer female kind of strange. Further the only thing that bothers me is that when I interact with other ppl I am under the assumption that there character represents them, pschologically to discover that the girl your talking to is actually a guy can be very disruptive to a playing environment. Often times this is not an issue however there are an increasing number of Males completely masquerading as females. Personally you can be whatever sex and profession you want to be, but we must be wary of those that would use it to deceitfully exploit certain situations. I.E charactes masquerading as women to more easily connect with real females in the game...grrr...scary...

i dont mind if you want to play a female character, but please dont lie and say you ARE female if someone asks, when in fact you are anything but. Doing this to try and get handouts and mooch off people is NOT cool, im a female, and i play female characters, and i do NOT run around asking people for money and weapons like a beggar. pfsh.

All Male Characters on a male player.
Why? Because I'm not worried about staring at an ass so much as I don't like the skimpy armor graphics on the ladies. I want a woman in full platemail like a warrior, dammit! It doesn't just..feel the same if I were playing a female character.
While others have the "ass" argument going, I just say this: If they do it, it's not something to rip on, because obviously they are very confident in their sexuality that it doesn't matter that <insert random come-on from a horny-middle aged man> while they're playing a female.
Also, the "preferential treatment" arguement..true. I can't deny this. I've seen people just hand a woman char some stuff, if the same guy on a male char asked, would have gotten pimpslapped with babypowder.

Beggars are always annoying. There's nothing worse than someone who solicits handouts instead of challenging themselves to actually earn their gear, regardless of toon gender. I've freely given out gear to those who make an effort to purchase my gear, despite the fact that they were well short of the required gold mark -- rather than taking any payment, I simply say "Today is your lucky day! Hit accept."

Needing gold and begging gold are two different things.
Don't beg, plain and simple..beggars are frowned on, ignored listed, and spat on because they want something from nothing. Now NEEDING gold for something and EARNING it is very, very different. =)

I am a male, and I play a female character. I just don't really like how a male elementalist looks.
Every little while, I put in a smiley like ^_^ v into my in game chat. And quickly, if I ever mess up on a target or anything, everyone assumes I am a girl and treats me nicely.
When a 'male' screws up, they are quickly blamed and called noob and a player leaves the mission. Thus, the mission is ruined.
When I accidentally aggro a bunch of random stuff, I am quickly forgiven and Ressurected right away.
A little unfair don't you think? Maybe it IS better if everyone was thought to be of the female variety?

There's begging and there's begging, though. In the War Camp there was a guy ROLEPLAYING a beggar, and that, I felt, was fun enough that I gave him 100 gold.

my gf has a character on my account and its quite funny when i get whispers that are meant for her by people who dont know we both have characters. yeah i use female characters too and not for just the eye candy but because the male emotes are just plain awful, i'd be embarassed to dance or even do a taunt. i even deleted my male necro and made a female one because the dances are just so bad on male characters. only a couple of examples are needed here, male necro = spazzy crap jumping like an idiot, female necro = cool thriller dance, male warrior = pathetic grind/idiotic twirl, female warrior = cool pulp fiction dance. since the sex of the character doesnt determine anything you may as well go for the best looking or best emotes.

When I make a new character I usually just choose a gender which I think "matches" a class; I ended up with two female/two male characters so I guess there is some sort of balance. ;P

Someone has a problem with it as there is an all girl guild I heard spamming in Droknar's for members. There was a catch - you needed Team Speak to prove to them that you were in fact, actually, a girl.

Well I've heard a lot of 12 year old gamer boys that sounded like girls on teamspeak. If you really want to know if an "in game girl character" is a real life girl. Just watch them talk for a minute, if they start saying things like "PM me if you are a lesbian" or "anyone want to have sex?" Well then it is a boy.

I blame my desire for female characters on D&D. Why? Because I was always forced to GM, and I had to have every concievable character type up and ready to go. Now, I usually end up with a Female and a Male character in just about every game I play.
What's really funny is when you get people hitting on you because they think you really are a girl. It's even better when they freak out after you say "You know I'm a guy, right?" Good times, good times.

I'm guessing that this is for various reasons which cary from person to person, but one reason is that in every fighting game ever made, the female characters pwn everything. they are the fastest and nimblest and deal quick damage. So people think, well, why not in RPGs as well? It's all a matter of choice, but i just give a word of warning to all the guys who payed like $40 for GW just to pick up chicks that most of the chicks are, in fact, not chicks at all, and you are making a big mistake.
for example:
