I play both male and female characters, for a couple reasons. First of all, my husband also plays, so we share all 4 characters, playing each others when we feel. But I also like the variety of it. After all it's a game, not a representation of real life.

So, judging by the reactions so far, it seems that - practical reasons aside - girls play males to:
1. Have the the best looking character
2. avoid guys oggling them
While guys play girl to
1. Look at the most appealing character
2. have other guys oggling them
Something about Mars and Venus comes to mind.
And I know, I am not being fair to a lot of guys now.

I play both male and female for a couple of reasons I have a character for me which is male one for my girl which is female (although I do all the work on that character) and I have another female character which i use for trading because I've noticed you get a more receptive response when you're trying to sell stuff if you use a female character (I guess the 14 year olds are more willing to buy from what they think is a girl)

Yeah, until you grow up and realize girls just suck your money away anyway. Especially when they're "girls" online.

I said no, and I'm not a monk IRL either, are you a warrior IRL?

Just depends.
I used to only play males in any game (mainly coz the older games are always "You are *male hero* out to save the day!" and thats the choice you get. In Morrowind for example, I have a mix of males and females. So far on GW I only have females.
I dont' have any males yet in GW. I generally like to make my characters look like me if I can, although I gotta agree, it bugs the hell outta me when people get pervy (though this hasn't happened to me in GW yet). It's bad enough in real life, without pathetic guys who can't get a GF being turned on by pixels. Only perv I have is my bf
And on other people: I just tend to treat them as their character. I generally don't refer to them in-game as 'him or her', but by the name, though if I'm talking to my bf I'll say "Well she/he was rubbish/good". Unless I end up friendly with someone (i.e. add them to msn or something) I couldn't care less what their real gender is. And even over msn it doesn't matter to me. Point is, this is a role playing game. Not everyone who plays an Ele can cast firestorm in real life and not everyone wearing an in-game bra needs one outside of the game.
However I do love it in other games when someone says I'm good at the game then finds out I'm female

Im a 32 year old Man and I play whatever I think suits the type of character im creating.
MY chars: Male N/R, W/Mo, Melee R/W,
Female E/Me, Me/Mo, E/W and Mo/R.
For some reason the sex of the character was dependant on what picture I had in mind about the character.
Ive had quite a few people think Im a woman when playing my Ele's. Not so much with the other characters.

I play Male Characters and I am male.
My friend I made buy the game made a female necromancer...something about liking how Goth girls look...I especially liked it when he whispered me one day and said "Dude, I just bought some armor that makes me look like that hot chick on the outside of the box"
I always like to laugh when someone you know is a guy is on a female character and is making the most sexist statements, and such things as that.
As to the Males liking other males looking and commenting about their female
models, I'd laugh if I was playing a female and someone was hitting on me lol.

".....plays an Ele can cast firestorm in real life and not everyone wearing an in-game bra needs one outside of the game....."
My character is a guy, i am a guy, my character has 15k gladiators armor (yep the "man bra") is this a reflection on me, my sexuality or how i play the game? Nah not really. we laugh and joke getting male guildies, playing female characters to "entertain" us, and the actual females in the guild enjoy it equally when they as males "entertain" us as females. Its funny as hell to think people are out there on the pick up hahaha. (No offence intended to anyone who has and congrats to ya). I guess it matters to some people, i have been told "i am really a girl" by heaps of people begging for cash items, help, i only believe those i speak to on msn, or TS and honestly it doesnt bother me what sex you are, as long as you dont agro and make a tit of yaself, be a man be a woman, be a blue alien haemafrodite, makes no odds to me.

I'm a married guy and I have 4 chars, one of them female, my Me/N. She is my favorite and I have ascended her - the others are working towards the desert. The mes is my fav for two reasons, first because the mes is a fun character to play and second because she is nice to watch. I tend to agree with those who have stated that it doesn't matter the gender on the other side of the monitor. When I play the mes I don't go out of my way to "act" like a girl - I wouldnt have a clue how to do it anyway lol. Once I recieved a friendly "in character" hit from someone playing a male ranger. We were trying to get a run to Droks and me and the ranger just stayed at the start and waited, after everyone else left the area he said, "So, Anna......now that we're alone......." LOL I didn,t have a clue how to respond - I wasn't offended and wasn't tempted to say, "Dude!" "I'm a guy!" But on the otherhand I didn't feel like it would be cool to play the part and make the moment last any longer than it should so I just said, "Maybe I should have gone with the others and we both shared a laugh.
In game I don't make any assumptions about the true gender of anyone in the game because I don't care - it's a role playing game and as long as we all play our roles without insulting each other it's all good.

Well, I haven't thought about the whole Male / Female character thing in quite a while. I've gone through creating lots of characters. I'd say I've created more female than male and it is reflected in the mix I have right now. I have a Male Elementalist (Keeper), a Female Ranger (Keeper), a female Warrior (Probably won't keep, created to get a handle on the "Warrior Mentality") and a female Necromancer (Just playing around to see if I like the Necro skills).
I have to agree that I chose the gender based on how I think the characters look. The male elementalist may look like a pansy but the female elementalist looks like an escapee from the red light district. Tough choice!

Age or Gender - It doesn't really matter
Hey there
I am a 32 year old guy and all my characters are females. (just prefer it that way)
I have never had any come-ons etc except a few funny encouters.
The first as I recall was at Copperhammer Mines in the early hours of the morning. I had just finished mapping (clearing all map in area) and skill capping (with my Ele) in Frozen Forest and was resting before I began the next leg of the journey and that was to map and skill cap in Spearhead Peak. As I was waiting, a female necro asked about my armour (was wearing 60k +Lightning armour from Marnhan's) We were chatting away over local when this warrior guy runs past, stops and says something like
"Yeah (pause) nice tits" then runs off.
I must admit, that made me chuckle quite a bit.
There have been a few others were people have actually asked my gender and after telling them proceeds...
"Damn, was gonna try and chat u up"
But it's always been on the friendly side never on the pervy abusive side.
Anyway, in my opinion it really doesn't matter what gender, age, race, creed you are, the only thing that matters is what kind of person you are.
That's my bit anyhow.

I had male characters...but they're gone now. Hey, I had a male warrior and a female warrior. she had two awesome axes..he had a so so sword...and swords are kinda crappo....so he was deleted, and he had 15k glad and all kinds of stuff. His name was E A Games :-) I kept his sword, for sentimental reasons.
All my chars are now female....and DAMN! there are ALOT of perves and freeeeaaaks online who message me. 0_o
however my female chars have oarsome names.
-Floppy Bunny (my female warrior)
-Bunny Medic (my monk....sterotyped too, the smallest size, woo ha!)
-Jungle Kitten (female ele)
-Seissor Alorei (female ranger) (psy-soar. al-oar-ay)
Seissor.
The Floppy Bunny :-P
Bunny medic, same as most female monks...a midget
And jungle kitten...notice the weird GFX error on the dude near her 0.o

its irrelevant, once you get on vent the Truth is revealed.
tbh i always play female monks, mesmer, and rangers. i play male necros, warriors, and elementalists. why? because i simply cant stand the female versions of the default necro/warrior/ele, and im far too lazy to change it each time i play.
