there are a lot free skills from quests in chapter 1 that will be closed to a Cantha character and you might run short on skill pionts to buy them later (assuming you want them)
i spent (and still go there) over 1000 hours in chapter 1 and still enjoy it (your mileage may vary)
EDIT
having the skills unlocked from chapter 1 makes chapter 2 much easier.
as soon as you reach lions arch from Cantha the skill trainer now offers my favorites from chapter 1 as well

I'd start with Prophecies. The presearing area is pretty neat.

Cantha definitely, unless you have access to good runners in Prophecies.

There is no pre-sear in Cantha, because there is no Searing in Cantha.
However, I'll agree that the starter island is pretty cool.

id suggest thinking really hard about your playstyle and attitude toward the game before making a decision.
if you are the type of player who enjoys scenery and likes to take time to explore each place and facet of the game before moving on, choose tyria. as has been said, pre-sear is very well done and is very fun to explore fully. the missions up to LA (where you would start in tryri with a canthan character) are insanely easy and are made for low level characters.
if you are the type of player who looks to maximize time and effort spent, start in cantha. by the time you finish the starter island, youll be at least lvl 16 to 18 and pretty much ready for the rest of the game. and when you get to tyria, youll be as powerful if not more than a lot of the people questing from there up.
my personal preference is cantha. fresh out of starter isle, max armor becomes available to you at kaineng. as far as free tyria skills vs. buying canthan skills, i prefer the cantha method. you get to choose which skills you want, and early on at least, skill points are no issue whatsoever because of the high exp rewards for the quests.
if this is your first character EVER, i suggest you start in tyria. like i said, pre-sear is just flat out pretty, and i feel anyone playing GW needs to learn the story from pre-sear up. plus, in pre-sear you get to meet gwen, who is the greatest mystery in all of GW
