wouldnt it be easier to just not be able to equip unIDed weapons, i believe thats how D2 is (i could be wrong about D2 because ive hardly played it) but i still think that not being able to equip unIDed weapons would be the best, even better than having the mods not take effect until you ID it as was suggested earlier
someone may have suggested this, but i dont remember seeing it after reading all the posts

I personally dont see why someone would buy an unid'd item, its too easy to not get something thats worth what youre paying for it. I wont even sell an unid item, I ALWAYS id items so I can say to prospective buyers, "I have "such & such, it does "this & that"". Really kinda like gambling, as someone already put it, but to me, just never worth the risk.

Knowledge is power. If the information was posted here, then it would be spread around to other forums. When only a few have the info, scamming is more prevalent. If everyone knows it would lead to less scamming.

There was clearly no hp added, however when I ID'd them they had hp mods in the 20s. Can someone explain why they didnt show the +HP while they were un-identifed.

I had this happen to me but it was my own mistake. I had a -20hp icon in a slot that I was comparing to. Check that.

I posted a thread on this subject back in November as a word of warning to buyers...
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=85709
And no, I dont think this is enabling scammers, but instead, is warning potential buyers of the potential scam. Scammers who abuse this already know about it...

When I tested the unid weapons, I had a shield (-2st, -3hexed) equiped. I dont mean to question the validity of your statement, but when exaclty did you try this test? Since I first posted in this thread I have tried to find out the mods of every Unid weapon I've come across. I simply equip it outside of town just to do a quick check for things like +health, degen on energy/health. I have aquired multiple multiple swords that did in fact have a health degen on them, however these mods did not show any degen when they were equiped Unid. So I will ask the same question I asked so many pages ago, Is it still possible to test weapons Unid. All I ask is that someone test it and leave some results. And please don't post fictitious results without any real testing.
EDIT: fixed typo on results that caused a "go red engine"

Other games featuring cursed weapons had been mentioned... How about ANet just added a few magical effects like constant degen or constant condition (regrowing after removal like lava cripple), that could not be unequipped unless you paid a rather high fee to a proper NPC? Of course, "test mules" could be made, so the process would still be possible for all concerned, but it would take much more time with all the character creation process, that takes a bit even for PvP characters thus making testing less profitable - you could just go farm more stuff instead. Anyway, no point in keeping stuff unIDed IMO, other than blatant scam - I ID all my stuff and sell the worst junk to traders, give away cheap, but still mildly useful stuff like scrolls and cheaper, but still useful weapons and keep the better stuff to sell it once I really need storage space (yeah, right, like I'll ever have the patience... :P).

Just use common sense, if the seller is your typical LA 1 pro-spammer, and most of their lines are filled with 15^50 sephis, chaos, fell blah blah blah and then all of the sudden, req 8 unidented fell blade 80k.. stay away. That fell has had more tests than san francisco in a crisis and they know it's junk. =P

I've sold a number of unid'd weapons, usually going off of the price guide listed in the trade forums (lowered, of course, because the current economy seems to have taken a dive).
I don't know how to test the items, although I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult. I just don't have time to test for every mod...in the (say, 15-20 minutes) time it would take to figure/calculate what an item has, I could've gone adventuring and gotten more.
About the only time I do ID an item is when it may be useful to me (in my case, staves or othere ele-based items), or has such a high req that it would probably be worthless for anything except the mods anyway (for me, the breaking point is 10-11 req).
I'm not much of a gambler, but, according to the number of unid weapons I've sold, I take it that a lot of people are. That's the way I look at it--it's a gamble. I could lose a lot of money by selling a perfect chaos axe...but I'm willing to take the risk because I'm pessimistic about my luck in drops.
It's good to know that there's a way to tell what mods a weapon has before you ID it. Maybe the market will die entirely...perhaps I won't be able to sell my unid req 9 fellblades for 25k anymore...until that time, I'll take my chances that I'm selling off something that will probably ID into crap in my very hands.
I have been dying to know what I'm getting rid of, lol
And just FYI, I never buy unid items. I just give the gamblers a chance to get something more than what they pay for. Fitting, since I live in Las Vegas.

not everyone sells unided items that have ben tested. usually i ID my items, but if it is something that i dont need or wont ever use, such as a fire staff or truncheon or somthing like that, ill sell it unided for 1-2k if its max dmg, if not is usually jus 1k, i have sold a few chaos axes unided for 3k, and the buys were generally happy, i know 1 guy got a lucky max dmg FDS with 30 life and 15^50 off me (kinda wish i hadnt sold it, but its a gamble).

In no way, shape, or form is selling unidentified items considered scamming, even if the seller has an "idea" of the mods. The buyer assumes all risk when buying something unidentifed, pure and simple.
The practice of selling/buying unidentified items comes from unlocking mods in PvP by identifying it in PvE. There is NO WAY to determine whether an unidentified item will unlock something in PvP, so the practice has always been one of pure luck. Threads in various forums exist from long ago that buying unidentified weapons to unlock PvP mods is a total waste of coin because the chance of that happening is exceedingly rare.
In reading this thread, it would appear players are buying unidentified weapons, not for unlocking in PvP, but in hopes of finding something that has worth in PvE for more than what they paid. That being the case, the buyer assumes all risk in such a transaction, whether the item has been "tested" or not. I would hope that Anet doesn't bother with something so mundane as this and put their efforts elsewhere.
