Depends
Exampe when I create or bring over my chracter to nightfall, take time to smell the roses, explore and do stuff in a casual pace, talk to all the npc's, take in the flavor, read all the OMG Nightfall sucks because I have to change X that I've been doing all along on guru and find humor in it.
3 months after Nightfall... try and get chracters through as much as possible in a more A-> B -> C quickest route to be ready for Chapter 4

1) Join a good guild - my enjoyment of the game purely comes from the people I play with. A guild can help you start out, teach you basics about your chosen class and provide you with some decent gear.
2) Do all the skill quests - don't buy skills until you've done all the skill quests :P
3) Use guildwiki http://www.gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page - best source of information.

Not specifically in GW but in MMOs as a whole it usually turns out like this:
1) Envision the most powerful character you like to build towards in the game.
2) Spend all your time and energy doing it your own way and fail.
3) Go to the game forums and read how all the cool kids do it. Rofl.

Led Zep has a good point.
1. Spend some time to come up with a unique name that you will still like weeks or months from now.
2. Do all quests. Get the xp, item drops, and practice using skills, pulling, etc.
3. Study guru or wiki's skill pages. I highly recommend coming up with your own builds and combos, and the only way to do this is to look online and know what kinds of skills you have to work with.

1. Learn the controls for the game.
2. Dont be intimidated by other people who have uber rank, armor, or money.
3. If its your first time, try out all the classes to get a feel for the WHOLE game.

what are the top 3 things that you believe to be most important to accomplish when you start playing?
always the same:
1. bring bottle of cola in morning or some beer in eavening
2. go to toilet before planning to hold halls
3. make sure you have a good time

1. Have fun
2. Experiment with different professions and builds
3. Make sure you have the time for doing stuff, so you don't have to leave a group halfway through.

1:Learn basic game controls
2:Exploring
3:Get the skill build most suiting to you and wich makes full use of youre own talents and preferences.
Having fun is ofcourse above all the priority but if youre not having fun why do you play guild wars in the first place? So that ones an obvious factor.

Why run to droks to get the best gear and still not be able to kill stuff because you don't know how to work with your character?
Research, yes use the search on here as people say (I do but still do not get the search to work correctly! Those that do are lucky, I just searched for something before posting this and it found nothing, even though I know I posted it yeaterday! So those that are quick to jump in with use the search also note that not everyone is getting results back!)
It is about fun as well, you will find that some people forget that!
When you are in an area, you may find yourself starting to get overwhelmed by foes etc.. That may be a sign that you need to look for better armour or higher level weapons but it also may mean you need to take a closer look at your skills and the tactics you use. If using henchies then the choices you make for one area may not be the best choice in another area. Also it could be that you are not the right level for the area, go back and see if there are quests you have missed to give you vital xp to raise your level!
There should be enough in pre searing to get to grips with the basic mechanics of your character, the same in cantha on the starter island. On the starter island in cantha you should quickly get to lvl 20 by doing quests and missions. I would recommend that you do not team up with lvl 20's in the early levels as they pretty much kill stuff on their own! You need to struggle in the early stages as it will develop your ability to assess a situation and try it from a different angle.
Just make sure you have fun

1. Try to scam your first victim.
2. Find someone worthy of the title 'noob' and call them that.
3. Use your scam money to buy uber 733T items so that you can shot it off to everyone else and don't forget to call them a noob too.
