Wow. Thanks for all the replies, lots of good info here (ie. don't give out personal info). I guess I should've known better.

My comments on the monthly fee: I wasn't actually serious. I, too, think it's great this game doesn't have a monthly fee.

My comments on age vs maturity: My apologies to the young mature people out there. If you can keep your heads on straight you're going to go far in life with your positive attitudes. When I talk about immature people, I'm not talking about you guys

I got about a dozen PMs, so if I don't respond to yours in particular I apologize. I'll try to get everyone. My in game character's name is Xorena Kai if anyone wants to look us up.

EDIT to the above poster:

Quote:
Sorry but I'm only acting mature in games with monthly fees and the ones that have ingame ways of reporting abuse. Acting mature is no fun and there's really no point to it. Have a nice day !
Treat people as a function of who you are, not as a function of who they are, or the environment you're in. It's a shame people use the crappy reporting system in this game as a license for bad behavior.

I was half-serious but it's true that Guild Wars has the most retarded community I have seen in any online game I've played, including the infamous Counter Strike . Contrary to what some peope have said in this thread, monthly fees actually do a good job to filter idiots. I have yet to witness the dreaded immaturity of the WoW players, I'd really like GW players to be as "immature" as them.

Wife here - hubby plays too.

Hard to find mature people, of any age I agree though.

We've been trying to meet new people, so one of my adverts in HA and TA is "husb/wife duo seeks to meet group of mature people to pvp with regularly" and you wouldn't believe the inane and rude comments I get back. "OMG you let your wife play?" (Hey buddy I'm the wife) to "Mature? so you want to talk about sex?" (uh, no, mature is not a measure of what crude topic you choose for discussion, rather, what you choose not to talk about). Or we get on vent/ts with these supposed "mature people" are bragging about smoking dope or start hitting on me as soon as they find out I am a woman.

I am so close to fed up. I just want to pvp as a team with people who don't want to talk about pot and sex all the time.

On a side note, I believe a huge downfall to this game is they don't charge a nominal monthly fee. At least a monthly fee would keep the kiddies out who can't do anything without mommy or daddy's credit card.

Anyway, thank you for letting me vent. Argh.

I love how its considered a 'Mature' outlook on life to suggest changing the rules to get rid of something you dont want, personally the "lets change the billing structure" at the end, very immature.

Not only would you cut out all the annoying kiddies with far too much time on their hands, youd cut out sensible people like me who play a fun game that has no fees, and is therefore non commital, so it can fit in around their social life, student life, work life and so on.

There are many mature players playing GW, not just in age, but in how they act, and there again are many immature, your probably just going about trying to find them all the wrong way. Why not sue the guild search function here to try and find a guild with players that suit you more?

As a minor counterpoint...

I've been playing GW for a year now. Always PVE, but never, ever PUG -- I either hench or play with an IRW friend or two. Sadly, I've run into plenty of immaturity and nastiness in the game, enough to cause some of my friends to leave the game, but, thankfully, for PVE you can avoid a lot of it just by only playing with people you know. With PVP, of course, that's not so much an option and one of a number of reasons I've avoided PVP was all of the reports I read in the groups about how bad it can be. However the possibility of winning enough medallions to earn a celestial sigil this weekend was enough to tempt me -- it'd be nice if my friends and I and our little guild had our own hall, better still if it was 'earned' (albeit not the 'right' way).

So I spent an hour or two Friday and much of Saturday playing RA. I expected to get called 'noob' a lot and get often and roundly cursed for my general cluelessness -- it wouldn't have been entirely unwarranted, given I was/am new to things. I expected to see a lot of nastiness, especially from whomever lost. My expectations were not met. I didn't get called 'noob' (or whatever variant) once, and I saw very little in the way of immaturity. Even when my team lost on what would have been the tenth win (something that happened depressingly often), I saw people often say things like "Oh well, it was a good run" and such. For every one twit I saw type something insulting or immature, I saw ten people say something adult and sports(wo)man-like. Normally I might have only noticed the former and not the latter, such is human nature, but I was expecting so much more of the former and none of the latter than the preponderance of maturity slightly shocked me.

Granted, this weekend isn't typical, RA being filled with 'noobs' like myself maybe takes a little of the edge off since my lack of skill didn't stand out as much as it otherwise might have. And, granted, I'm certainly not saying there isn't a lot of immaturity in the game in general, there certainly is and it's tolerated too easily. But, as someone who has in the past bitched at length about said immaturity, I had to relate how I've been betrayed by my own negative expectations.

I expected to have to wade in a lot of immature bile to get that sigil, instead I had a pleasant, relatively mature, time.

Irritating as it is, I remind myself to find the amusement when a warrior who has charged ahead and aggroed every group in the compass onto the party dies and then rants about what a "noob" the healer is. Last time, I was the healer and was so mad.........especially when he told me that his warrior had done waaaaay more damage than my character had since her creation! Well, yeah. She's a healer, he's a warrior. It's a no-brainer.

When husband and I play in a PuG together, it's usually, "omg, really? She's your wife? That's cool! I wish my (gf, wife) would play but not women are into gaming" type of response.

A player got peeved the other day when I popped into Shing Jea (I think) and commented on the potty-mouth language with a comment similar to "You can tell school's out. All the 12 yr olds have come out to play." The player came back with a "who you calling 12, damn it! I'm 13!! " Yep, that makes a big difference.

There are immature players at all ages. I took a screenshot in the Marketplace yesterday of some moron thinking he was cool by insisting in all-chat that a female avatar "suck my c***" (edited for some decency). He was so insistent that soon he was shouting in all caps and then added a few variations. Most people seemed to be ignoring him, luckily.

Yes, I know that's what the chat filter is there for, but why should I be forced to have it set high for disrespectful people thinking it's 'cool' to use excessive profanity or vulgar language? I can understand (and indulge myself) in cursing at a foe in battle or even dancing on their cooling corpse afterwards, but the generalized inappropriate language and behaviour really only shows immaturity, not any sort of 'cool' factor.

If I were the parent walking in to see that being typed/used by my kid, they'd be blowing bubbles for a week!

I beg to differ, 90% of the morons I get, I get in PvE.

I have 2 lvl 60's so I guess I've played it long enough to know that the overall maturity level is much higher. Aside from minor annoyances, like kiddies who want to duel everything that moves and flame you when you refuse there's really nothing that can compare to the incredible moronity of some of GW players.

Well you can't of done much pvp then as I found 99% of all the morons in GW in pvp. The ones who insult you, if you either A) beat them or B) They beat you. The one who try and tell you how to play your build but don't have a clue how to play thiers. The ones with a high rank who think thier the best thing around but can't play anything except iway. And so on.

Maybe you where lucky then. But in what little time I spent in wow due to it being SOOO boreing I found the avarage maturity of wow to be VASTLY below that of GW. Haveing a monthly fee does VERY little if anything to effect the maturity level.

I like to think of playing GW as passing through a ghetto or slum. There are
some really nice, decent people there. But the ones that are most likely to
stick their heads up are the nasty, slimy, sleezy ones.
If you walk through a ghetto saying " Does anyone want to be my friend and
play with me ", guess which ones will respond? You're just going to have
to be a little more subtle you go about finding like minded players.

I am also a wife and player....and seeing as my 40th birthday has come and gone........I guess I would be filled under 'mature'......yes, I am old and both my hubby and I play (it is something we can do together and its pretty much free and easy to get to..) so I was convinced to play, and now I am addicted (its all his fault).
I pve, I suuuck big time at pvp (reflexes just aint what they used to be) so we either hench around or join a few pugs---very rarely do I discuss my age or sex with people unless I get really ticked off (yes, I was called a kid one day....hm, i am old enough to have GRANDkids......lol)....otherwise I usually just ignore the stupid childhood antics that the kids do.....and I usually dont play my monk...though he is the only character to have gotten his protector title (and yes, I DID let the childish warrior die once or twice for his insolence, noob my arthritis )
soooooo....I usually just ignore the childish conments and go on playing....

While I'm sure I'd qualify as a n00b by many peoples definitions, 17 days of game play, 16 years old, just got to level 20 and the desert a few days ago. I'd like to think that I've been atleast more respectful and kind than most people I've found in the game. The lack of maturity is annoying and I hoped it would stop eventually, meaning that most people like that would have quit trying because it's too hard or too much effort, but this really dosen't seem to be the case anymore.

I can't talk about PvP because I'v tried maybe 3 times and gotten flamed to the point of leaving the group, despite being the healer often times, however PvE is just as bad or worse in some cases. From what I've seen though in big towns (Ascalon, Lion's Arch) the most immature and annoying people generally stay in distract 1 and 2. While it's not foolproof I've been more succesful finding actual good people in the higher number distracts. Good meaning a combo of skilled and well mature for the most part. So just throwing that out as a way to possibly avoid it.
Uhh, please forgive my horrible spelling.

Good tip, Darkwyrm. I may switch to a higher level district next time I'm in town and people are spamming for horny ladies, sex chat, or someone to suck their dick or show them their pussy (and similar crap). Seriously, I can put up with kids being kids and talking silly, but when I'm signed onto GW at 8pm at night and it feels like I've wandered into a red light district or somehow found myself on an XXX Chat Line, it's crazy.

Thats why I NEVER have local chat turned on in any big city. Or in fact in any outpost unless I need to find a group. And since the only places I do need to find a group are warcamp and the warren. I have so far avoided any of the above. I also switch off local as soon as I have a group.

The worst is probably Diablo 2 or maybe RuneScape. WoW and Counterstrike aren't really idiot magnets, they just have huge player bases. Since idiots tend to congregate at a single spot, the idiot population can seem far larger than it actually is in those games. For Counterstrike, play on a good private server where an admin is keeping things straight instead of leaving it to player voting. For WoW, find a good guild (similar to Guild Wars I suppose).

Diablo 2 has no such privacy and only the hardest of core find their way into a good clan. RuneScape... well, what can you really expect from a game played in a web browser for free?

I may end up doing that, but it's less than an ideal solution. We shouldn't have to turn off local chat because players who are in clear violation of GW's policies are allowed to run rampant. I like to help people out when they ask questions about the game, etc., and I can't do that with local chat turned off. But I do understand why you turn it off, and why I may eventually turn it off, too.
