shouldnt there be close combat spears in addition to throwing spears? The concept of throwing spears is a bit odd...

How is the concept of throwing spears a bit odd? It's an African setting...throwing spears are a primitive weapon, most weapons in GW are...they were really used, so how's the concept a bit odd? :/ Maybe the name "javelin" would make more sense to you? A 'melee' type spear makes no sense to me...a polearm is similar, but not nearly a spear.

I agree. There's really no need, since the damage would be the same probably. If you want to act like it, just run up to them and act like your hitting instead of throwing.

They need to quicken the speed at which they throw imo.

where do u hide all those spears you just threw? do the enemys pass back the ones they get hit with just to be helpful?
at least arrows can be backed up... tho i wish all rangers or anyone who equips a bow will have a quiver...

Not odd at all. Sounds pretty cool actually. Finally a profession that uses none magical projectils other than the ranger!

It's pretty fast imo since it's similar damage to a bow. Did you try that R/P build with Tiger's fury? It was viscious.

I like the idea of changing the name to a javilin, but a close combat spear would work good for some builds that may come up, but then again people could just be a P/W and use a sword... But one of the few things that did disappoint me about Nightfall was the fact there were no close combat spears. I like spears over swords, axes, and hammers in most cases. Also the concept of pulling spears out of nowhere is a bit odd. Although I do have these complaints I still think the Paragon will be a promising addition to Guild Wars.

What about the concept of talking dragons?
or unlimited fire blasty thingies coming from a wand?
or obelisks that are controlled by flags?
Or Undead?
or weierd wolvering standing up things?
Besides, rangers pull arrows out of there @$$, dont they?
also no bow-strings....

Uh...yeah, javelin would be a better name for them, and they should come in a stack (similar to diablo 2) where you can attack at a close range or have the ability to throw....

u gotta remember there based on afercian spear hunters a broad head spear does much more dmg than a javalin u need a spear to bleed the animal out to folow his trail its the same principle with arrow heads its the normal hunting stratgey a javaline would just poke and might stay stuck in the animal and not bleed at all then how would u find the aminal
lol
sorry for the huntng class just figured id throw my 2 cents in

For the 4th installment they should really incorporate a manriki (meteor hammer) type weapon user. Also there was a big rumor about Nightfall, that some class was going to use knuckle type weapons, so that was dissapointing when it wasn't so. Personally, for Nightfall, the devs could have inserted pikes instead of replicating a pure javazon type char.

the Africean hunters didn't want to bleed the animals to death, they used poison tipped spears/javalins and followed the animals by their dung which was left behind.

Back in February when I demanded Chapter 3 have spears, I was actually thinking of close combat like you're imagining. Well they gave me spears with a cool animation so I'm not bothered that much, though next time I demand a chapter include something I'm sure they'll make an effort to contact me for the deets. O.o Anyway they also gave me the Scythe, which is somewhat similar to the fighting style I invisioned for a melee spear. And of course to make it up to me for getting my request wrong, they gave the scythe the ability to hit everything in a 300 degree radius with each swipe of the scythe.
Now, get to work on that floating continent, ANet!!

Technically spears were originally made for throwing....
Also we kinda do have a polearm in the scythe...but that's a little far reaching there..
