I've never gone to get my armor but I have been in several groups where at least one person needed to get to the forge master. Before the book trick was nerfed my brother wanted so badly to get his FoW set completed. Me on ranger, someone on ele or monk dont remember which, my husband as monk, and my brother (who was the bip) tanking lol.
Thats right, our tank got lagged out after a monk in our group had to go and then a few more err7s along the way. We were almost to the forge itself and somehow we managed to clear it, complete the quest and get his armor but my gawd it was a pain and a half!
I went with a B/P group of Pugs and they started dropping like flies. Poor gal wanted her helm so bad (she was the tank and a good one too). When someone err7ed people just started quitting, she started begging people to stay and somehow we managed to pull that one off too and get her her helm with her as tank, one monk, and 2-3 rangers I think o_O. She was so happy!
The key is not to give up and thats not for you so much as it is for the groups that fell apart because a few people erred or quit. It can be done in a non traditional way it just takes some hard work and paying some extra attention. Now if all your monks err out well then, yeah starting over might not be a bad idea especially if you have a tank no one can heal, but for the most part if you are halfway there and you still have at least one monk - stick to it and get it done. If for some reason you still fail well then so be it but at least you didn't quit when there was still a chance to succeed.
As for forgetting materials that happened once while we were down there... Our guildie had harrassed us all week to take him down there and thusly we did and spent forever teaching a noob group what to do. We got there and he was missing some ectos because the site he checked was wrong, and rather than go ahead and craft what he could he decided to go back and try again later.... 7 groups later he finally got his armor, lol.
Better luck getting your armor next time - and yes find a nice guild group to go with, they are more common than you think ^_^

Yeah, My guildy and I are hoping to get to the forgemaster some time this evening so we can both get our armour and the godly healing of Antigone agreed to assist us. If you'd like to join out group, just PM me. That means 4 reliable folk will be there and you'll probably have greater success than you average pug.

It's so nice to be appreciated.
But don't bring a 600 spirit bond monk next time, pretty please. That was THE most boring fow run ever. I had to spam local constanly to keep my self awake.

Ice Tooth is the place where we go to find silence and solitude. That place is so empty, so many people don't even know it's there that both the FBI and the Interpol won't find you if you hide there. I mean - Ice Tooth Cave, Spanish district 1 is as populated as the Moon.

1st set: Went with my guild as others were crafting, i err7d and got a pug quite quickly which then disbanded before heading over to kill the seeds. My guildies had just finished their trip so jumped back in again to get me mine.
2nd set: ugh took weeks of trying several times each night, err7s all over the place, numerous pugs filled with leavers and just bad players that would split up and go opposite ways, a few 55hp monks, beach farmers etc. It was awful. Got close but err7d before the last seed. Eventually got there
3rd set: was my first trip without the use of the book and got it first time
4th set: gathered up about half the materials for it, got bored sold them to rare material trader and bought 15k kurzick instead.

15k kurzick looks very good for faction necro armor.

My Male Mesmer sure doesn't regret buying Fissure Armor. I almost Error 7'ed out when I had finished the seeds of corruption, so I got Lucky there
Probably start working to replace my Krytan Enchanter's pants with the real ones when I need another timesink
