Another Interview with Dev!
http://gw.766.com/news_1227/gn_1230/...D2CD6B.2.shtml
Well ok...it's in Chinese, but I'll highlight some of the important informations.
Note: Everything in () is my idea/opinion.
- M&J are very confident about Guild Wars' market in China
- lvl 20 is the core of Guild Wars' design; They will not increase it for any reason
- The 8 skill slots is also the very core of the game; This will not change for any reason
- "Life Skill" had becoming more and more popular in many MMOs (cooking, fishing, etc.); M&J says they may add this as part of Guild Wars to increase its replayability toward those more social type.
- GW:F had so called "Asian" theme, but many player tend to think it's more "Japan" themed. M&J say they may consider the suggestion of making a more "Chinese" themed chapter (I say, keep those fist fighting prof ideas coming)
- M&J says they are considering the suggestion of adding voice communication to Guild Wars.
- The real development time for Guild Wars is over 10 years (from raw idea) (From another source: the starting dev team for GW is only 3 person)
- (ok, this is a none GW related one) M&J is very impressed about ChinaJoy (game show in China), it allows the dev team to be more closer to the players. E3 on the other hand, is more formal and better for business. (especally after the recent "nerf")
Other than that, GW is still in closed beta stage in China. They're planing to release it before the end of the year. (possibly during holiday season) (So, everybody should start pressuring Anet to release GW in China sooner so that you'll see less random Mo/W invites in ToA)
UPDATE: Bolded some word. I see a lot of people didn't read that part.

It means that there is no GW market in China. That doesn't stop people from China from buying the game, it's just that there is no technical/language or any other support for players in China.

Probably skills that you need/do in real life such as fishing, cooking, smithing, etc.

Life Skills would be awsome, I just don't know how they would incorporate it with Guild Wars style gameplay. I'm 100% for it though...it will give PvE players new things to crunch.

I like the Life Skill idea - A Warrior chopping up Carrots with his Crystalline Sword, and heating the stove with his FDS hahaah
Sorry if I sound off topic, but good translations =)

^^ ha nice one liamb but i think the life skill idea would just make gw seem more like a job than a a way to relax...then we might have some sad story of how an asian in a internet cafe died because he thought he fed himself, long behold he fed himself IN GAME. a disclaimer would have to pop up every time you feed yourself in game saying 'Your character is eating, make sure your eating as well!' or something else that sounds like its obvious but sadly needed when you have people defficating themselves after dying from playing too much WOW, or neglecting your baby while playing WOW with a loved one. yes, a disclaimer would be needed indeed

Lv 20 cap is here to stay-good
Factions Japenese themed?- Seemed much more Chinease to me, except for the Katana.
8 skill slots- seems resonable, specially if lv cap will not be raised.
Life Skills- could be alot of fun, although fishing in Fable was a drag

i'm in for life skills, but how would cooking, smithing or whatever fit in the game? Frankly, if smithing means making our OWN weapons... what more could i ask for?
Dye machine?

yeah, the life skills is awesome, but it shouldnt be a huge part of the regular pvp. it should be something that you can chose to level up on your own and if you dont, then you dont get the benefits of the "life skills" products
maybe foods that do different things, or more potents alchohols that you can brew (can anyone say "moonshine" lol jk)
so yeah
that would be pretty awesome

Life Skills like fishing, thats part of WoW, which is why I don't play WoW. The day fishing is a profession, is the day I join the guys at work in WoW. If I'm going to fish, I'm fishing with RL friends.

If they're going to incorporate these "Life Skills" into the game, a pretty good kick-off would be to make masonry one of the skills. ANet could make Bricks of Mud and Clay Bricks actually obtainable in PvE and all of the "Masons" could go about constructing an Auction House by developing their skills and using the bricks and other appropriate materials (such as wood).
Similar things could be done with other life skills: Cooks could make consumables like rice bean cakes, smiths could make jewelry either for aesthetic purposes for further character customization or with bonuses (depending on if/how ANet wants to implement it), and so on. It definitely has some potential and it will be interesting to see if and how it plays out.

Dude, I like to kill stuff. I'm not about to hop on that bandwagon. If I wanted life skills or something overly complicated I would go to Sims or Everquest II. No way, leave it alone. I'm with Markedw on this one. I do like the drunk title, but only because that plays into the game (back in presearing and the warriors all standing around getting drunk, killing bears and stuff). Ah... I miss those simple times...

Just because you don't like the idea doesn't mean that other people shouldn't be able to play that way. I'm unsure how these lifeskills were implemented in other games, but couldn't you just ignore lifeskills if you didn't like them? I for one think it sounds like a great idea. Its always nice to have more things to do.

M&J said they have few developers with Asian heritage so they incorperate their cultures into gw:f's graphic.

This is clearly my opinion, and everyone is entitled to one. From my viewpoint I have a wife, kids, work, etc. Adding life skills makes games too realistic for me. In Sims you actually have to do things or your character dies... lmao. I just had a bad experience with that game I guess. However, I thought the title Guild Wars was all about fighting... not cooking and cleaning. That's why I bought the game.
If you can ignore life skills and just play to kill stuff, I will. You can have it.
