There have been no updates - every time someone mentions this topic, all is said is that "they're working on it" in various forms.

It also doesn't mean they aren't working on it. It could be a low priority task. Would you rather they be refining and fixing bugs for Nightfall or trying to implement a better trading system and risk having both be buggy and unable to release?
And I'm not too sure what sort of updates you're looking for. You expect Gaile or one of the developers to come in here and start explaining their tasks, objectives, and overall progress? What if they're wrong and the thing gets delayed even further? I would think that keeping people guessing is a better alternative to having people pissed off because they have to delay a promised feature for more critical stuffs.

Oh man you have no idea how much it will help. Simple really. I played FFXI and the AH was a dream come true. AH = Auction House BTW. You walk up...the AH is split into categories. You know..crafting..weapons w/e. Walk up check the going prices of items w/e they may be, and ponder what you want to sell it for. Put it up..walk away, and if its bought..it goes straight to your storage. If storage is full im sure they can put it in a sort of buffer to pick it up when its cleared. It would be so nice.....

Why exactly do you think this will happen ?
From using the guru auctions, I find that if the item is worth selling the people looking through the auctions will find it and bid without me advertising. An in-game auction system will have more players, and should have the same effect (assuming a reasonable catagory/searching system).
Why would you still tradespam when you know that most of the people interested in buying your item will be looking in the auction house anyway ?

some GW game reviews have criticized ANET for having no auction house
ANET knows its a "high demand" feature
we will see it someday

excellent point...and I agree, the spam wont be eliminated completly, because there will still be some idiots to spam, but I bet it cuts it down 90%. I see a lot reviews list no auction house a negative to GW reviews. Guys an auction house cant do anything but help. Also if anyone thinks Anet cant implement an auction house then maybe they should not be programming. I also don't want to hear about the server space argument, because if they aint got the space they should not be in bussiness.

I'd say an auction house wouldn't cut-down on spam that much as it would likely only get used to sell the more high end items. The scores of morons peddling their crap will persist to spam. Also, I think if Nightfall included an auction house, they would've mentioned it by now or will soon as it would be a major selling point.

It would be a massive selling point. I know that I remain broke in game simply because it is far to hard to sell the items I pick up or I go straight for the first offer because I don't know when the next one will come along.
There would be a bigger shift of gold in the economy as well to the poorer players (like myself).
If they take a look at the "Detail Proposal For An Auction House" thread (along those lines) you can see there has been a lot of thinking and designing going on.
One thing though is that the community would be very very happy if ANet could just mention something inregard to the Auction House, like progress of it or a mention that it is happening slowly...very slowly...
Something is better than nothing.

Yup. No doubt about it. They haven't said a word about auction houses, so it ain't happening this round.
I've said before that it should not be a high priority for Anet to implement an auction house. (1) It's not easy to get right and any mistakes will cause no small amount of whining, (2) players have adapted to the spamming, and (3) there are tons of more important gameplay bugs (such as lag around corners) that should be fixed if they get tired of creating new content.
Just get rid of the trade channel and give us user-controllable filters and that's all that's needed.

If you're really annoyed by WTS spam, then avoid dist 1 and 2 of the major outposts (Kaineng and LA). The only reason I go there is basically to buy and sell my stuff, not to form parties or chat. People who don't realize this or are new learn very quickly.
The auction house can only benefit - as someone pointed out, look how much good gwg auction and rpgtraders have done. The buyers should be the ones with the power to choose, while sellers compete with each other over price. Basic economics tells us that a free market is the ideal economy, but we don't have that because there is imperfect information (there is no competitive baseline price that the buyers and sellers agree upon) and pairing a buyer with a seller basically depends on the chance they are in the same town and dist at the same time.

AH will also be used to everything including materials, weapon mods as well as pretty cheap (max) weapons. It's going to cut down the spam big-time. Also, most of us will turn off the trade channel as we'll be able to find most anything we want at the AH. Trading centers like LA and Kaineng will still have spam, but much lower than before. Spamming isn't going to be effective with an AH around.
It's not just reduction of others spam but of our own as well. One of the reasons many of us want an AH is so that we don't have to sit around and spam WTS for hours.

Everyone keeps saying 'auction' house, but the best answer is a broker. If you play EVE-Online you know what I'm talking about. A truly automated marketplace.

Well, personally I won't be holding my breath for this to be implemented any time soon. ANet's got a lot going on, especially with this 6-month release cycle. I don't see them having much time doing anything else.

Positives and Negatives of Auction Houses
On the negative side, auction houses will be awesome! Ok, insert sarcastic tone, and repeat as desired. As if Anet won't be ruining the economy enough with the change in mod salvaging, this will be the nails on top of the nails the already split while they hit the nails in the Guild Wars economy coffin.
On the positive side, auction houses will be awesome! No more spammin in every city "Want to sell worthless item ####### for 300 gold"..just merch the dang thing. You'd be better to kill random mobs and get the 300 gold faster thataway. This will save alot of people alot of time, and should clear the chat clutter.
I just hope that they do it right, similar to how EQ2 set them up. Just go to a certian place to list an item, charge a listing fee and % of the sale price for listing it, and be done with it. Hopefully it will automatically let you view the item, not only the normal picture from when you had it in storage, but perhaps an "in-game showcase view" that rotates and maybe even shows it in action!

Who cares if it fixes the spam problem, that is not the reason why an Auction House is fundamentally necessary.
Whether it fixes trade spam or not is irrelevant, although I think it will because normal people do not enjoy being hardcore trade spammers.
An Auction House is necessary so every player does not have to turn into a hardcore trade spammer in order to buy or sell anything, as is currently the case and has been since day 1. Trading is a horrendous pain in addition to being migraine-inducing. Trying to trade in Guild Wars is akin to subjecting one's self to torture and definitely one of the most aggravating things ever put into a video game. In my view most people do not even bother to try trading at all which is why most players are poor. The inability to buy or sell via the current "trade system" is the single biggest thing that is horribly wrong with Guild Wars. That is why an Auction House is fundamentally necessary.
Given that the devs had said they were working on something like an Auction House way back around the time of the Sorrow's Furnace update and yet nothing happened, I'm not expecting it to come in time of Nightfall. I think they won't implement it until the sales get really bad for a Chapter and then they will figure they need to do it at that point.

you and I both know what it is stick. they want to make money from it. If it does not show up in Nightfall I would be worried, as we know for a fact it is ready and working in the alpha server. Its just a matter of them deciding where and when to release it. Nightfall makes sence, but if it does not show up its likly some decention in anet between the developers and the marketers... If it shows up as a $9.95 store item instead I swear I for one will never use it, I would rather trash the crap from then on out then sell it at all. As it is I make use of the trade buton with Guild member ONLY and never for a profit. the trade chanel is 100% worthless anyway cause even if you are a resonable buyer the prices are ALWAYS too high for anything. and to sell to someone is bogus cause all they do is flip it. They never use it.
I'll just stick with collectors and crafters for my supplies. they NEVER cheat you or treat you as a mook. and the prices are always just dandy.
