FYI: American currency is not backed by bullion, its based on faith. The difference between American currency and gold/plat in guild wars...not that much of a difference, and not just American currency but all types of currency.
I believe that ive learned a few things while playing gw but yes over time you relize its worthless. I justify my "addiction" by saying "well if I get better, who knows I may end up in a top guild and make some money; whereas if I were playing Wow id just be losing money and gaining nothing." But in the end you find that youve wasted your time and money in a bundle of data.
Answer to your question: Yes I could leave at anytime.

Addicted? No. Guild Wars is better than TV or other hobby that I'd use to fill my downtime and leisure time.
Virtual items: If you can still have a lot of fun if all of your platinum vanished tonight, then you've got the right mindset. If you'd quit playing altogether if all of your platinum vanished tonight, then, maybe you're putting too much value in these items.

I managed to quit cold turkey about a week ago because I realized I was addicted (6-7 hours a day, at least) and had grown tired of both PvE and PvP. (Not a very good combination ) I had 1300+ hours over 9 months, but I'm realizing how wasted that time was. I quit once before in March, after getting tired of leading a dying guild, but I eventually came back for the Summer once my preordered copy of Factions came. I've made sure GW doesn't steal any more of my life by canceling my Nightfall order. I do still log in now and then to say hi, but mostly I've moved on. Of course, if I'd been really addicted, I wouldn't have wanted to quit.

Actually i believe SouthPark is one of those shows that indirectly and ironically criticise the wrong things off society.

Online gaming is treated like a sport in South Korea
A South Korean man has died after reportedly playing an online computer game for 50 hours with few breaks.
The 28-year-old man collapsed after playing the game Starcraft at an internet cafe in the city of Taegu, according to South Korean authorities.
The man had not slept properly, and had eaten very little during his marathon session, said police.
Multi-player gaming in South Korea is extremely popular thanks to its fast and widespread broadband network.
Games are televised and professional players are treated, as well as paid, like sports stars.
Professional gamers there attract huge sums in sponsorship and can make more than $100,000 a year.
They are the types of games that completely engross the player. They are not games that you can play for 20 minutes and stop
Professor Mark Griffiths
The man, identified by his family name, Lee, started playing Starcraft on 3 August. He only paused playing to go to the toilet and for short periods of sleep, said the police.
"We presume the cause of death was heart failure stemming from exhaustion," a Taegu provincial police official told the Reuters news agency.
He was taken to hospital following his collapse, but died shortly after, according to the police. It is not known whether he suffered from any previous health conditions.
They added that he had recently been fired from his job because he kept missing work to play computer games.

If you start going as far as this man did, than Video Games are definitly not healthy for you.

I don't understand why people worry about becoming an addict to something. I believe that as long as you are happy while not harming others you can be addicted to whatever you want. I mean, in the end. Every single person, no matter what they have done in their lives will die and the world will keep going. It doesn't matter if you spend your life in a couch smoking pot, it doesn't matter if you spend it getting rank 12 or if you spend it saving starving children in Africa, you will die, the world will forget about you and that's it.
So I say, be happy, don't hurt others and play on!

For certain I do recommend that people don't kill themselves doing the things they love, but besides that. Ya, Play on!

Those are sad perspectives of life.
Isolating your self from the real world to the point of becoming completely anti-social is not healthy.
These kind of games are just like drugs, they provide you with a great escape of reality, an ilusionary world.
As long as you dont let them take you as far as they took that south korean man in my earlier post then youl do fine.
Just dont let it get to your head

Is not healthy if it harms you, therefore it would make you unhappy and then you shouldn't do it. But if you can play for 40 years straight with a smile on your face and you don't hurt anybody in the process, then; why not? AND Im not saying I could do that.

Let's not turn this a conversation about life the universe and everything. It's about a game we all enjoy. Just remember -"Moderation in all things."

I think geting "RealWorld Grandmaster Cartographer" is more important than its Gw Counterparts.

A hobby is only an addiction when it's a problem. When your work, school, family life or social life suffers, or when you experience health problems. Once there are any signs of that, then you have to re-evaluate your life.
But there is nothing wrong with playing video games for a few hours a day, and if you get enjoyment, and in MMORPGs social interaction out of it, then it's just as much (or as less) waste of time as any other hobby.
I think GW stimulates the mind, you have to think about your class, build, stats, skills, team mates, enemies and so on, and I can't see anything wrong with that
Can I walk away from the game, or from gaming in general? Sure, there are more important things in life. But some entertainment and relaxation for a while every day can make these important things easier to deal with, since I am more relaxed
|
^^ Exactly what I think! I completely agree with Sorcha ravenlock.

I don't understand the concept of thoughts like this topic...
It is "entertainment", you are suppose to "play", and to release some stress from work through entertainment. Playing is a very important part of life for a human, as playing is one of the most efficient way of learning and stress release. (I suppose this game is for people who feel competition is fun. Then again, if there aren't any competetion, then the players might feel they had not accomplish anything, as to why competetion are placed insidie a game which will create viewable results and thus telling the player that he/she had not been wasting time... I could go on)
Now I just wish there is a game that is completely productive, entertaining and stress releasing at the same time. (I do hope that come true one day... and maybe I will aid it to make it happen =D )
