If you do the quests in the area and pick up bounties when you see them, Sunspear and Lightbringer points do not have to be ground out. It's easy to fill out a Tyrian characters Sunspear general by doing most of the quests around Sunspear Sanctuary and fighting the monsters with bounties activated. If you purposely avoid enemies and ignore quests, yes, it's a grind, because you artificially limit yourself to only purposely killing enemies to get the points, repeatedly. If you actually play the game, do the quests, and kill stuff while doing the quests, no, it's not a grind. Nothing has to be repeated to get General. beyond general, ranks are not needed.

Chapter one wasn't that long really, it was just interesting AI bugs like the suicidal dwarf king in THK that made it more difficult to complete easily, not to mention you don't get your last 30 attribute points until you're possibly level 20 if you play through the entire game and party sizes are kept small for a long time...
I think there's as much content available in Nightfall that your average new player would experience as your new Prophecies character, if not more in the way of entertaining story and useful AI allies. The Guild Wars engine's gotten a lot of attention and is nicely polished for the most part. With the new AI comes new interesting unintended AI behavior that will hopefully be straightened out if it was unintended. I chased one monk all the way back to the start of a map from the halfway point on the Consulate Docks, I never caught him; he ran ito the sunspear archers

I personally think the sunspear title should be across the account, rather than per char, ie. Kurzick/Luxon title. Anet can do w.e with the lightbringer title.

Compare it to factions. You only had to get 10k faction once. After that... you could rush each char through easily.

Sorry, I forgot the point of the game was to rush as many characters through it as quickly as possible, for no appearent reason

The game is perfectly paced, imo. But that's coming from someone who likes to explore every corner and do every quest in a game. In fact, I always exceeded the needed sunspear points whenever that was a requirement for any quest. My advice to you is to just play the game... experience the story, the visuals, the gameplay; when you get a novel to read, you don't just skip to the last page, do you?

A choice to grind in order to be given access to proceed further into the game?

I don't understand what everybody's complaining about. I got all of the points I needed on my ele (started a new NF one) just by questing and talking to people at shrines and killing only what I needed to on the way to/back from quests. As for non-Elonian characters, I had almost enough quests + shrine bonuses to get me the full 2,500 points I needed on my monk. I think I had to actually farm about 200 of those points.

I am sorry if anyone felt that there was a large grind with the Sunspear Rank. Personally i have 9 PvE toons and from what i have seen, even for non Elonian toon, you gain Sunspear Point (SSP) rather quickly if you just do the side quest surronding the areas and theres alot of them that offers more than 100 SSP for completion and should allow you to get 2500SSP for the general rank to continue. Otherwise theres always the SSP farm of Hekets with Olias as MM while reading a book or watching TV ^_^
Like some other players said, if you just play through the game and story and attempt the quest (its not that hard and time consuming like faction ones) you be able to get to Sunspear General with ease while you are leveling up your heros as well.
Hopes this helps.

I am quite sure that the day NF released the early shrines on the mainland were +3 points and now they're +4 (am I just crazy, anyone else remember this?) if so, then I had more to grind for it and still got it in no time flat just doing quests and taking the priests blessings.

I thought it was paced quite well. As others have said, if you just get all the hunt bonuses along the way while doing all the quests, you'll have more than enough without having to farm. I'm sitting at ~4,000 points, didn't farm any of it.

So true. Takes hardly any effort to get to the rank you need to be to progress if you just play the game.
I think some people should go play other MMOs and come back after learning what grind really is.

Getting the ranks hasn't been a problem for me so far. However, what has been quite annoying is how my old level 20 characters from tyria/cantha get lvl 2/6/13 Koss, Dunkoro, Tahlkora. What's more, that level 6 Dunkoro is needed for the very first mission, which features level 20+ mobs. Sure, they get boosted health/armor there, but still, they need levels.

If you think getting sunspear rank as a Canthan or Tyrian is a grind, you're doing it wrong. Instead of repetitive zoning and killing of the same monsters, how about following some of the quests you have and finding new places, with new quests, that give new sunspear rank awards.
Like Criminally Sane was saying, true grind doesn't really exist in Guild Wars, you're just spoiled.
Also, leveling up your low lvl Dunkaro's and Koss's isn't too bad, you've just gotta keep an eye on em for a while, but they get PLed pretty fast. I think scrolls work on NPCs? That could help too if they do.
Stop staring at your character's pocketbook and start viewing the scenery and the quest storylines that the designers worked so hard on. There's more than one type of reward in life, and in a game it's sort of silly to choose a method of play that makes you crave for more more more now now now.
Take an effort to slow it down and you'll enjoy the game more. I promise

I am really enjoying Nightfall, but I can't see playing it through more than twice. My main guy is a monk who has played through everything, so I can always help out teams. Eventually I'll role a NF Paragon and run him through the game as quickly as possible.
If I had 7 PvE characters I wanted to run through the game, I'd go nuts. The 20 missions are more daunting than the Sunspear points. Trying to hench or pug the last 5 missions is nuts. The Realm of Torrement missions are like questing FoW or Underworld.

Too much of a grind? No...I did think so when I saw how many sunspear points you needed for "General" but when you work through a few quests and take the bounty as well it's not a problem.
I'll admit to rushing a character through the game. My Elementalist is my first and all time favourite character. When we started NF it just really annoyed me that she couldn't get anywhere I needed her at any time... Thus, I rushed her through. That was my reason... I noticed a lot of people in this thread suggesting it was because people wanted to sell endgame greens while they were still valuable...or they were rushing characters through for "no apparent reason". I will not be selling my endgame green, expecially since it's has a restoration requirement. The best staff of that type I have is req. 12 restoration...this one is req. 9. So if people were looking for a pointless reason to rush a character through the game...mine was driven by my annoyance at not knowing what was in store for me, and wanting access to everywhere by at least one character.

No grind really. Just by doing the missions and quests, you get more than enough sunspear points. Add in that the Nightfall side-quests are the best I have seen so far (Best.Quest.Ever. lol) and there is no need to grind at all.

I agree. The quests are really enjoyable (most of them, at least). You can't really call it grind if it's fun, I think. Well, I can't.
