Just have a drop-down to select a map, then from that map, select a town to travel to.

We'd all like this to be the case, but we don't know how much coding is involved, or how the current system works, as we're not the devs. I think that if it is too difficult to implement the map switching without going anywhere, that they could send you to the least populated district of the city and that -may- reduce latency issues on initial load.
And, to rehash my statement in the earlier parts of this thread, if they did that (reduced latency on major port loading) then I personally believe this would be a non-issue.

agree a couple times ive had to get somewhere and back and the extra stop in-between is quite annoying and if you dont have 1gb of ram the game tends to freeze in cantha for a couple seconds before everything catches up and you can move again properly
also directing people without leaving the continent im on would be helpful so i can say "so so is north west of x" without havin to map to the continent just to see the map

I really like the idea of having a map list menu. It'd save so much time and loading.

reducing redundant loading will likely save a bit of anet bandwidth performanace / cost, too. not to mention the bandwidth saved for the loader and other people in town.

I believe that a world should be just that, a world! I for one do not like useing the boat every time I have to switch continents. I would rather have 2 (or more) levels of zooming on the map so that I could select the EXACT city I want to visit.

The reason it's with a boat is becoz you have to travel to another continent (which is in fact ANOTHER CHAPTER)
Imagine the zoom option... after 6 chapter you'd have 6 zoom levels.
The M option would give you an endless list and would result in people whining about the scrollbar again.
It's never any good now is it...
Change something and they'll find something to bitch around again anyways.

Six chapters doesn't exactly mean six zooms. In six chapters, it might still be three zooms. It just really depends on how Arena Net uses the space that they have.
If you have read my other posts in this thread, you would see that there are ways to prevent people from going to chapters they don't own, even if they can see the continent.
An alternative that I just thought of that would still have the big map would be at the third zoom, it just says the names of the continents, instead of showing all the individual towns and stuff. Then, you click on whichever continent you want to go to, and as long as you have access to that continent on your account, then it lets you zoom in to the views we have now. This way, it will be a lot less clutered than my previous idea, and it will still be a quicker for the people with slow computers to load for the people with slow computers than how it currently is. Plus we will finally be able to see all the continets together. Even if the map for the third zooms is really big, we will still be able to easily choose where we go to.

QFT. That is probably the main reason why I want at least some type of view that lets us see all of the continents together, and why I keep pushing for a big map even though not many people seem to agree.

They need to just make the Guildwars world a globe that you can spin and travel to any town you wish as long as you have access to the content and have reached that far. No more silly boats, no more town hopping, problem solved.

There is no reason to use the current system, it's causing more harm than good. Which leads to a change.

Maybe you guys didn't take geography in grade school. But contintens are actually seperated by, hold on to your socks! WATER!..
I agree a system that lets u select map then click on town is better then this system we have now. But one big map, no...

/signed, but I don't care if its one huge map or not. When I click the boat, it ought to show my current chapter's map, and also have other buttons for each chapter I have unlocked on my account so I can switch between them easily. I really hate having to go to LA/Kaineng just to get somewhere.

No need to make one huge map, no need for weird zoning. Just make an option that toggles between the four maps without moving your character anywhere. Let my monk sitting in Unwaking Waters be able to hit map, and look at the Tyrian Map. If they want to still use the boat thingy, have the boat be the button to do this.

/signed - ive got a great idea what about arrows at the corner of each continent which just shows another map like a up arrow down left right etc and you could zip through the maps and for people who havnt purchased a game they could see the map from another game but not go there would be simple and nice

It's easy, just developers must add some arrows in big map for change Tyria, Chanta, Elona, and then we select any town.
