I've always had trouble naming characters, I can sit there for hours just trying to come up with a name. I usually give up and just grab something off whatever I see first.
In fact, my first character (w/me) back in beta was called Sir Martinelli because I had a bottle in front of me with the word Martinelli on it. It wasn't that great a name, but it served its purposes.
Later, when I started learning Japanese, I named my characters in romanized japanese names. None of the names were that good, but I had some such as Naosu Mahou Tsukai (healing/cure/mend magic user) and Akutai Mahou Tsukai (evil big magic user) I realize now with my current japanese skills that these names sucked. None of these exist on my account anymore.
After my japanese naming stint, I took a two month break from GW. I came back later, deleted my older characters (which I've regreted since birthday presents >_<) and made a ranger I named Blaise Smartshot. Obviously because I wanted to shoot smart, not dumb. She serves as barrage/interrupt now, which isn't unique, but I get a fair amount of interrupts and deal good damage with her.
I also made a war called Queen Blade at about the same time. I remember seeing someone with the word King in their name, and this name just popped into my head and forced me to make her. She's an axe war atm, though I originally inteded her to use swords.
I made a monk I called Sanctious Blaise, which I intended to make into a 55 monk. Sadly, I finished her right when griffon farming got nerfed. She did get me into healing however, and I'm proud to say I'm prolly one of the better pve healers out there.
I had a necro I named Cursed Blaise, which I obviously named as an opposite to my monk and an alternate to my ranger. I deleted her, though I don't recall my reasoning for doing so. It might've been to make space for a pvp factions slot for the faction weekend though. And two days after I deleted her, they allowed you to get another character slot (though I don't remember if it was from preorder or if you could buy character slots). I wasn't very happy.
I remade my necro as Rhea Bastion, a character I invented for a story I was working on. Factions character. She was the first in a long line of characters (up to now actually) that I've named from characters I invented. She's a MM/SS necro, like most of them out there now.
I made a Sin called Tenka Aiko, once again based off a character i made and another factions character, which I mainly use for PvP now. She doesn't do well in finding groups in PvE even though she rarely dies.
I made a rit called Natsumi Tokiha, another character I made. Obviously factions character. While monks can never truly be substituted with a Rit, rits make wonderful healers or rit lords. And for me, above all else, vengeful farming ftw!
I made a mesmer I called Majou Robin. She actually isn't named after a character I created, but because I became interested in an anime called Witch Hunter Robin. I don't really use her much, but sometimes i play a fast casting fire ele in homage to the anime that never got the response it deserved. (Sci Fi even had it slated for a live action version with some famous people on board, but it got cancled and since sci fi has horrible customer response and no reasonable way to dispense information, many people wondered what happened to the live action version... and this is off topic and i'm rambling so i'll stop now)
I made and remade several elementalists to this point, but I don't remember their names. The one I currently have is called Grace Noble. Once again, a character I made. I hope she lasts longer, as I lose money everytime I make an ele and level them up to 20, buy max armor, runes, weapons, etc. She's my only non lvl 20 character and is lvl 6 somewhere in Istan. Nightfalls character.
I have a Haley Wynne, paragon named after one of my characters. She's somewhere in Kournan atm, leveling up her heroes.
Last but not least, I have Lynne Reisil, a derv I named after another character I made. I was running out of character names at this point, so I actually went and made the character Lynne is named after. She's currently in Vabbi getting the princes to side with her.

The Hand Of Death- Necromancer
Needed something related to death and there was a magic card that I always used to have and it is the only one I remember.
Barbed Blossom- Ranger
I needed something that had something to do with nature, and I liked blossom. Barbed was added so that it made it sound like she was beautfil but tough and quick to anger or something along those lines.
Radiant Obscurity- Ritualist
I was thinking along the lines of the light of the souls radiating from the depths of the underworld.
Llyana Delirius- Mesmer
Llyana because it is somewhat close to Lyssa and delirius is suppose to resemble delusion which is mesmery.
Falcate Moon- Dervish
I picked this because I was thinking about the shape of a scythe blade and how it was a crescent moon. Crescent didn't sound much like a name so it became falcate.

Silly Warrior- Only name I could think of 5 years back when I started playing Tribes-Original, and I've kept the name ever since, because its never taken.
Kalphite King- Kalphite Queen was a big boss from Runescape...and I liked the name so I changed it from queen to king....
Uranium Bullet- Used in Uranium 235 nuclear bombs, they fire the uranium bullet to ignite the explosion .

Kusanagi Takeru = Warrior. Kusanagi is the name of a magical sword in Japanese mythology, and Takeru is the name of one of the owners (actually the one that gave it its name).

I'm possibly the world's biggest wine geek (I won't bore anyone with the details but I seriously can back this up).
Vitis Vinifera (MM necro and my all-around net alias): genus/species of the winegrape
The Wine Advocate (Dervish): my favorite wine publication
Cabernet Collecter (spirit spammer Rit): well, I collect Cabernets (among many other varieties)
Cabernet Collection (this SS necro in the avatar): see above
Cabernet Sauvignons (assn shadow form farmer): well, the singular was taken
Cabernets and Pinots (mule Paragon): love em both
and my other two
and......
Pinay Protector (all-around monk): a nod to my affinity towards Pinays
Seamus Laphroiag (farmer & KoaBD War): one of my favorite Scotches and a classic Scottish first name

I usually try to take Latin names referring to death. My Monk's name is Mortis Vigoratus which means Death Healer
My nec's name Mortis Ubiquitous-Death found everywhere a past nec's name was Mortis Interruptus which is a play on coitus interruptus. I named my minion master ABBOTOIRE which is french for slaughter house. My warrior-Trvth Jvstice is of course from Superman's motto; "Truth, Justice and the American Way." I tried to make it look Roman by substituting v's for u's.

All my character names have a suggestion of ice or the japanese word for ice "aisu." In just about every online game I play, my name is "Ice Dragon" and if that's taken, I throw in my favorite random three numbers, 981. (Don't ask, I've had a bit of an obsession with these kind of things as my "gamer handle" for years now, long story.)
So now that I've taken care of the back-story, my Necromancer's name is Deaths Icy Sting (pretty self explainitory), my warrior is Ice Drgn (would've been Ice Dragon but it was taken so I just shortened dragon to drgn), my ranger is Icy Barrage after one of my favorite ranger elites, my assassin is Hakabakashii Aisu (Aisu, as I said, is japanese for ice while Hakabakashii means "swift", thought it would suit the proffession), and my Paragon is Sousui Aisu (sousui means commander or leader in japanese).
And there you have the explination of my character's names.
Edit: Also, I've just recently created a mesmer in Pre-Searing (Not going for legendary defender, just love the scenery) who is named Genkaku Aisu (Genkaku meaning illusion).

I took my first character's name seriously. Shyft the Pyro is a D&D character I have played in multiple campaigns and love dearly. He started out as an off-hand character concept in a throwaway game, but has grown on me over the years. Couldn't make him a dwarf in GW, so I made him look like me instead
All my other characters' names are puns, one way or another. My main I take to be a representation of me, at least in some way (male); the rest are eye candy
A Little Death (N/Me) A reference both to Death Magic - which we all know a MM necro has to have a lot of - and to what the French call little death. Look it up or PM me if you can't find it
Broken Arrow (R/W) No relation to the nuclear power plant. At the time I made this character, Ranger and Warrior were the only two professions I had no skill unlocks for. I had heard good things about Experise and how it could modify the cost of Warrior attack skills, so I envisioned a Ranger going into melee instead of shooting a bow. Why? Because she broke the arrows on purpose I do use her as a bow ranger, and the irony is never as thick as when a drawn arrow gets stuck in her hand
Never Online (PvP) I am a PvE gamer, and I rarely - if ever - PvP. I do like going into Random Arena now and then, where people don't care as much whether they win or lose. As a result, that character (in one form or another) has been online long enough for me to earn the Gladiator title.
Imitates Life (A/Rt) Made during the Factions preview, my "fake Assassin" has completed the Factions storyline and many a Kurzick faction farming run. The name is a pun on the class combination, but, seeing how no one wanted Assassins in their mission parties, I started "faking" a spirit-spamming Ritualist, first with Weapon of Quickening and then with Ritual Lord, changing my character (imitating) to capitalize on the realities of Factions (life).
Hold My Ashes (Rt) Aside from the obvious item skill pun, this Ritualist only made it as far as Shing Jea Monastery because she was created as a "mule" - made to hold items for other characters.
Piercing Melody (P) I wanted something that would describe the Paragon well for my Nightfall preview Paragon. "Melody" is about the shouts and chants and echoes, and "piercing" is the type of damage spears do. The name didn't take, and when I tried to recreate the character after Nightfall release, I went with...
Piercing Vibration (P) This was more like it. Still a reference to both of the above, plus innuendo. Think about what a vibrator is and what precisely it pierces Unfortunately, the Paragon didn't excite me as much after Nightfall release as it did during the preview, so this character has been relegated to storage.
Scything Cleavage (D) Another Nightfall preview character. To cleave is to divide, penetrate or pass through something as if by a cutting blow, but we all know that cleavage is not just the act of cleaving something The character didn't last. I deleted it during the preview, thinking I had no interest in playing a melee class (especially after the way the Assassin turned out in Factions), but posted it in a forum thread elsewhere. Needless to say, by the time I realized I wasn't into the Paragon the name was taken. After much consideration, I remade the character as...
Turbulent Dreams (D/P) I'd love to take credit for the coincidence, but I swear I had no idea about the details of the Nightfall storyline when I made the character. I thought about the spinning wheels of female Dervish skirts and the word turbulent stuck in my mind, insisting I use it to describe the Dervish. For all its bluntness, Scything Cleavage did describe two important aspects of the class - using a scythe and striking multiple targets with a single blow, as if cutting through one to get to the other. Still, nothing came to mind; the more I thought about Dervish the more I came back to the dance - which initially I did not like as much as the Paragon's. Stuck, I resigned myself to the associations of the word turbulent, thinking I'd never be able to pin down anything about the Dervish as well as my original name did. You could say I was pleasantly surprised when Melonni - a Dervish - started talking about the dreams she was having
And last, but not least...
May It Never Come (W/Mo) I love pre-Searing Ascalon dearly. Never Online used to be a pre-Searing W/Mo of mine before I moved it to post, deleted it and started going into Random Arena. I always come back, even if it is just for a little bit. With the new pre-Searing title track, however, I might need to make for a longer stay...

Kurzuck And Suxons - A guildie's name
<---- My main character
The name started as Succubus. As mesmers are suppose to use beauty and illusion to kill enemy, similar to succubus. The queen is succubus is named Lilith. So the name is set as Lilith, but I also wanted it to sound more Asian because the character is going to be Cathan. So I dropped the 'th' and made it Lili. The psychic part is after Psychic Distraction, my favorite skill.

A collection of characters for me:
Brutus Nightshade (Warrior)- first char I created. Just made it up, wanted a big warrior with a mohawk.
Kim Cattrall (Monk) - She heals, in more ways than one.
Lefty the Clumsy (Ranger) - came up with the name in tribute of my twin, who had just blown out his left ACL. A clumsy ranger? Ick. Add in her pet spider, Kenny, of South Park fame.
Puppetmaster Jaana (Necro) - Master of Puppets and the druid of Ultima in one
Arigato Mr Robbotto (Sin) - He's my storage now, but he dances the robot.
Ralgha Nar Hhallas (Ritualist) - after doing the temple with the rit who spoke no english, this Kilrathi rit was born.
Dark Priest Shaft (Mesmer) - He makes his own reality
Felicity Mindflayer (Elementalist) - Hey, wife made this one up...don't look at me.
Miss Demarc (Ranger) - Elonian ranger, didn't want to give up Kenny. She can't hit the broad side of a barn.
Petr Quincy Taggart (Paragon) - Never give up! Never Surrender! (and Peter was one character too long...I used spell czech on this one.)
Jocelyn Forgedawn (Dervish) - Another wife creation.

Become My Minion-Necro, my first character I made and my most used one at that. I had seen the minions inside the the GW manual and I loved it thinking I would always play it It also has a sort-of-powerful ring to it. I've had alot of parties say they won't become my minion, and most of the time they do O_o. After the nerf I switched between...well more necro builds that I can name depending on place and what I feel like
Lyetha Elfsdaughter-Second character made, elementalist, tribute to Lyetha Elfsdaughter from "Ghostwalker", name had a nice ring to it and I made her to look what I pictured Lyetha as, or at least I tried to
Fayt Elfsdaughter-Warrior, using Lyetha's last name I spent time looking for a name that would mix well with it and decided on Fayt
Abel Nightingale-Mesmer, tribute to Abel Nightingale from Trinity Blood
Sieg Harrt-Ranger, named after Sieg Hart from Rave Master, had to add in an extra "r" for it was already taken
Ryder Nightingale-Dervish, using a name I created in an RP mixed with Abel's last name.
(Soon to be made) Malkiore Hiems-A RP name I made up, I love the name Malkiore, I was thinking of going Nightingale but that's already been used twice >.> Hard to think of another good name for Malkiore in my case >.<

I agree with you on your first statement. However, shame on you for flaming and adding nothing of substance to this thread. Go to school and take Tolerance and Reading 101, because I do believe that this thread is about names and I don't think you posted on that subject.Seeing as I did take Tolerance 101 I'll let you off with a warning, next time post something significant.

Came up with my rangers name: I Eternal Glory I after I saw the trailer to Harry Potter: Goblet of Fire, call me a nerd I don't care
II Mielikki II after the creator of the bear, which seems fitting seeing as she has a bear as a pet.
Legends Nev R Dye after an old clan of mines logo/saying.
Crazy Calm:Necro...named after the line in Sin City
Crisis Redux...came up with Crisis on the spot and decided to make it Redux because it's a character being remade, being brought back.

My characters are all named through my random name generator:
http://www.geocities.com/arcady0/SciFi/lifepath.html
I prefer names that feel real for people, and the generator, designed for use in science fiction works, is based on actual names - making it ideal for me to get character names out of.

well. Nice thread.
For many characters, I wanted two things: a first name close to me, and a last name which might indicate the profession.
So all my male characters have the first name Dru, a variant on my own name. My female characters I named after my daughters--who were themselves named for notable literary women: Beatrice (Dante's beloved and literary symbol), and Penelope (Odysseus' clever wife).
Last names have been attempts to suggest the class of the character...with some failures or exceptions (or, in some cases, have been suggested to me by my five-year-old daughter, who enjoys the character creation screens...)
Necro (and first character!) : Dru Shadesilver
Rit: Dru Rainshadow (given that rain = life, and it's a healer rit.)
Ranger: Beatrice Fallenstar
Warrior: Penelope Aeneas (Aeneas, of course, the warrior hero from Virgil's Aeneid)
Dervish: Dru Rainstorm
Paragon: Dru Shakespeare (a favorite author, and clever pun on the Paragon's skillset, I though...)
And my ranger's pet, a black moa from deep in the Echovald forest.... I needed something kinda emo (if you've seen the moa, you know why emo...)...and then I found that the moa is supposed to be female.... so: Ophelia, from Hamlet.
Can you tell I'm slightly a literature geek? That influenced some choices too. I used to have a tiger named T.S....
good thread, peeps.

Oh kewl the names thread resurrected! I had read a lot of this then one day it was buried way way down...
(Warning: Nerdy info ahead!)
Every single one of my characters has a suffix that comes from my favorite all time anime (GiTs) Ghost in the Shell (aka Stand Alone Complex Series, oh and the film it originated from). And since i LOVE films, their names come from first and formost, animes, then etc films.
Mrs Kusanagi Wa/X - My first character back from day one of prophecies, before my theme began, yet the name comes from the main character of GiTs: Major Motoko Kusanagi.
Batou of Nine Mo/Me - First themed character, the second primary character of GiTs, suffix stems from the Security Section that they work for: Section 9. He was the Major's right hand man, and supported her with any mission they had. Felt like a fitting role for a monk.
Kusanagi of Nine Ele/Mo - Name and Suffix origins are obvious. Second usage refers to a "second spawn" of the primary character in the GiTs film story.
Togusa of Nine Ne/Me - Name also from GiTs, a supporting character with the only "full human" characteristics. Ironic as my Necro eh?
Motoko of Nine Rit/Me - Name origin is obvious, fits on ritualist as she was only on a first name basis with mebe 2 people in her life. Ritualists are also very "mysterious".
Saito of Nine As/R - Another supporting character from GiTs, was a sharpshooter, a loose fit for an Assasin ya?
Pazu of Nine De/W - Yet another supporting character from GiTs. Was basically one of the "muscle". Also a good fit?
Aeon of Nine R/Mo - Started breaking into new names but continued suffix theme. Originally from the MTV original anime (yuck!), but i took it cause of my fondness for the film that was made in 2005: Aeon Flux. She was agile and elegant, like my ranger!
Fuu of Nine Pa/W - From another anime i am fond of called: Samuri Champloo. She was one of three main characters. She was fun and was the glue to their little band of travelers, much like a paragon to a group.
So there is my breakdown. Not that deep, but kinda reflects me and my fondess for certain film and anime. I already have names in mind for my mesmer and PvP slot! Also got some ideas for future classes. lolz! And thats my GW naming history. Love this thread! Some of yall have some REALLY creative names.
cheers!
