i name my characters according to what i like about them...

I chose to be an agent of the gods with the title of Herald. Needless to say I didn't make an ele because they don't have a corisponding god.

Herald of Lyssa > Mes
Herald of Melandru > Ranger
Herald of Dwayna > Monk

I have them all except for Herald of Dwayna. That name was stolen from me while I was rerolling my pvp character. I have the name on my f list but they never sign on *sigh*.

I would pay a lot of gold to get my last name back.

All by characters have the surname 'Hurbstersson'. In fact it's a name I have used constantly in 23 years of table top and pc rpg'ing.

I am Welsh, so most of my characters have some Welsh-themed name. My warrior 'Y Ddraig Goch' means 'The Red Dragon'.

All the other toons have a lastname of Burai, which is actually just the Japanese spelling of my real name that I have used as an IGN for many years.

The firstname is selected from a list of ancient Welsh names:

Ranger - Cadeyrn (cad "battle" + teyrn "prince")

Ritualist - Arianwen (arian "silver" + (g)wen "white, fair, blessed, shining, holy")

Assassin - Aeron (Apparently a Welsh variation of the mythical Celtic goddess of battle and slaughter)

Monk - Brother ... errrr ... not Welsh at all

I have to admit that I can't actually speak Welsh

but then I am from Cardiff

i use Jedimagician for crap such as runescape knightonline Muonline kalonline neopets maple story and stuff and for guildwars u have to have a space between your names so i just slapped a master on.

Despite the provocative intro of my original posting, I see that the majority of the posters here were smart or tollerant enough to look beyond my personal antipathy towards aNet and certain people, employed by aNet, by posting their names and the history behind them. Some even included some kind of biography for their character.

I still read certain names with mixed feelings.
Something with "kickass" in the name comes to mind, and without giving personal judgement to that name, I'd like to ask those who think that aNet is doing a good job with the word filter, how it's possible to have the term "ass" in a character (clearly profanity which aNet tries to prevent without success) while the term "jew" e.g. is banned.

Otherwise I enjoyed reading all the posts. I no longer feel alone with my desire for beautiful names, despite the "it's just a name, move on" mentaility I used to get in the past.

My chars are mostly my memorable characters from DnD sessions of yore:

Evian Blackburn - a reckless Evoker throwing Charm Person on every barmaid he sees

Hektor Bleakfist (originally Hekk-Torq Bleakfist) - priest of Cyric finally ascended to lichdom - patient and tedious as hell (though he likes solo village-raids for slaves and zombies), mostly occupied with dungeon-building efforts

Ser Sandor "The Hound" Clegane - a character from Song of Ice and Fire by R.R.Martin (truly an excellent read there)

Since the first preview of factions, my characters have all had names such as
(mostly PvP)
Hammered was Kvan - Hammer Warrior
Disruptive was - assassin with interrupts
Summoning was - MM
Wasted was - Ritualist
Draining was - Energy denial mesmer
Spiteful was - SS

It really prevents having to think too hard for names

Actually, its very true. I'm not going to turn this into a history discussion, but perhaps you should go read a book. No exact figures on me right now, but Wikipedia says 11 million vs 20 million. gg

I too like many others show more respect to names that show imagination and creativity. That is with names that are actually names. Things like Pwnzor, WeTadId and the like... well I won't get started on that.

As such,

Tess Stormcrow - First name came from a TV show, last name just popped into my head but I'm sure I saw it somewhere as well.

Vilandra Darkstar - First name came from the same TV show as Tess did. This time the last name is just made up, but seeing as it was for a Necromancer I wanted something along the lines of Darkness and Death.

Brother Skywalker - My monk, originally Anakin Landrunner (for fun), I decided to rename to follow Guild Wars own naming convention regarding the Monk order.

Disciple of Ori - Another straight from TV reference, this one from SG-1. Now if only they guy had the powers of the Ori...

Aranel Aini - This one has to be my favorite creation. And is the only one not related in any form to a TV show or movie. I was going to use the name Serra Angel, but it didn't suprise me when I found out it was taken. So with this one I got a little more creative and I looked up the meanings behind each name. From there I looked for Elvish words from the Quenya dialect that translated to mean the same, or at least similar meanings. Ended up with Aranel Aini, sounds kinda cool too in my opinion. That's my Assassin.

Likely whenever I get around to making my sixth character I'll use Aranethon as his first name, as that is my name translated into Elvish. I really enjoy reading other people's stories as to where thier creative names come from, there have been some really good ones out there.

All my names except my warrior and my monk are japanese turned english. Ninja Kurochi is my assassin, Shizen Kurochi is my ranger, Mahou Kurochi is my elementalist. I haven't updated my profile in a while. :P Shizen Kurochi means literally Nature Black Energy or Blood, depending on the context. Ninja Kurochi, means One of Stealth Black Blood or Energy. Mahou Kurochi means Magic Black Blood.
