Default lag

As many of y'all (that don't have T3 connection speed) have noticed lag is a very big problem in Guild Wars more of a problem than any other MMO I've played. I don't have any huge problem with lag in towns or most of the time but right when our group attacks a mob or engages enemies I start lagging like no tomorrow. This is usually when most of the damage occurs and I play as a monk most of the time so I cannot afford to lag. So, all this lag prompts me to turn down the quality control. This pi$$e$ me off because of all the beautiful artwork in Guild Wars (Kudos to the graphic designers). I do have DSL and a new Dell computer so it's not just me that has lag this often I just wanted to get y'all's thoughts on lag and how Anet has responded or plans to respond. ty

I never have problems with lag. My connection is a fairly standard cable, average speed. Do you have something that slows you down or bottle-necks the link? There's a ton of things that could cause an external disruption. Firewalls, your location, your ISP, spyware/virus etc.

Do you have anti-virus and anti-spyware programs installed? Make sure that you do. Plenty of malware can cripple your connection. But beware that two anti-virus programs can work against eachother, effectively cancelling out both, unless they're designed to work together.

^^^^ guessing he works with computers.

I do have Norton on it but I just want to know what Anet is doing to counteract this problem.

I use a Netgear router and used to get bad lag and code 007 all the time.
I went to the support site and saw what to do their. After changing the router settings and opening the right ports for GW I have only once had a 007 or bad lag in the game. Once in 3 months!

In almost all cases, the problem is at the client's end. If you're using the wrong ports, faulty software, broken hardware or a poor ISP, ANet can't do anything about it. I doubt they're actively trying to improve anything since their end of the connection is most likely as good as it gets already.

Also, any recent lag could easily be caused by the earthquake that took place in the Asia region the other day. It messed with millions of peoples' connections, and the effects can span as far as Europe, depending on your internet service provider and such.

That's not true I play other online games which I encounter NO lag but on GW it comes in buckets so it's not my end.

It could be. Different games run on different ports, and trace through different routers on their way from the host to the client. Tech support could probably give you some advice if you formulate a proper inquiry.

Different games work on different principles.

FPS for example use motion prediction, whereas GW uses synchronized movement. If you lag in FPS, it doesn't make a difference, but in GW you get rubberbanded back. FPS also don't use collision detection.

Other MMOs also use no collision detection, and very slow response (1+ seconds). In GW, response should be under 125ms, and must be under 250ms to be considered lag-free.

I'm on a 56k connection and I have relatively little lag. It usually lags a bunch on the first fight of the first mob in a zone, but then settles down after that.

I get the same problem as the OP, but only occasionaly, now. For a while, it was every single freakin' zone, and most battles in each zone, but it's been quite calm for about a month. I don't know what to suggest to fix it.

What the OP is describing has nothing to do with your internet connection. It's framerate lag which has everything to do with your ram, video card and the rest of your computer.

Also, be it MMO or FPS, it uses collision detection and it not making a difference if you lag in an FPS? Don't make me laugh.

i noticed that my ping is usually above 100 and the game seems ok. of course this would be bullocks to play with in any FPS game. i'd love to get like 30 ping though!

I was lagging immensely. Guild Wars was to a lesser extent, other games were more hungry for bandwidth. I found the problem to be three things which I have recently fixed:

1. I needed a new graphics card. Once I done that, it was heavenly already. Still some lag though.
2. A memory upgrade. Done that. Now I had a faster computer, yet internet seemed choked.
3. This is still something I compromise with. My firewall. I now have a secure firewall and internet security and enough room to play GW laglessly. It's the little things that all build up. And like you said, it's a NEW computer. You'll have a month or so of tweaking to get things just right.

Man, that doesn't sound like an internet lag. Since lowering graphic quality helps it's more like your computer is not powerful enough to produce high FPS (Frames Per Second) when battle starts.

P.S. I'm playing on a 56k with a crappy connection and I'm still ok. My ping is usually 400-500 but monking is not a big problem =p

Doesn't mean it's on Anet's end either. There are many hops in between you and Anet, if you're seeing lag then you should take a traceroute and see where the problem is.

BTW,..getting a firewall should be a top priority.

Get more memory (as in RAM), and youll see the problem dissolve. It is not network lag. Network lag would occur EVERYWHERE at ALL times. It is not on their end. Lag is significantly different. Also, if you do not have a high end audio card, make sure to dial down the sound complexity, as if you have no high end card, the computer will chug on the EAX and high sound quality settings. I dropped mine to none for my computer, and the stutter went down dramatically. So hopefully that can help too. I never had stutter ("lag") until after hte DX9 upgrade, so that should speak volumes for the issue (its not Anet, its my old 64mb graphics card's fault).

I used to have a lot of lag at the start of battles too. It had nothing to do with my internet connection though, as soon as I got bought some more memory and turned down my graphics, the problem largely disappeared.
