Wrong. Whichever God has more donated to them will give that district their headpiece. At least that's how it was last year.

umm...no no and no.
What shes meant is that during the final day, jan 1st, you can infulence the war or whatever by giving shards to dwyana or grenth. What it gets you i'm not sure. But thats all. The main festival event ends on january 1st it won't extend past that. Anet is pretty clear on that.
EDIT - I read somewhere you dont have to trade anything to get the hats this year. Unless the rumor about having 4 different hats is true, then maybe you can get the extra hats by donating.

...and that didnt make sense to me last year, and it doesn't again this year. Why do they talk about wintersday being this battle to decide if winter will last longer, when it doesnt either way?

Anet needed a reason to hold the event. That was the most logical thing they could think of for a wintry event, so that's what they decided about the lore behind it. They couldn't just say, "Hey it's winter so we're gonna have festival games and new hats." They needed some sort of holiday to back it up, so they picked the premise of Dwayna battling Grenth to see if winter will last longer (note how this includes Groundhog Day as well as New Year's in the celebration :P)

Yes it's not about the weather. And it's been clearly said that you don't NEED candy cane shards but people in the district trade shards to either Grenth or Dwayna and who ever has the most.. you will get your holiday gear from them.
Thus: You don't need to trade shards to get a hat. But you can trade shards to help determine which hat you will get. That is how you "support either Grenth or Dwayna."

And rather than competing, wasting huge amounts of resources on both sides, most districts will be one or the other - and it'll be easy to see; join a district and ask "is this a Grenth or Dwayna district?" and you'll generally be told which it is. Jump till you find one that is aligned the way you like.
Organizing it nice and early helps, get people to begin congregating for the deity of their choice beforehand, to ensure you get the right hat. There's little ppoint to throwing hundreds of shards away in a fight for a district if you can hop one district and get a guaranteed result you like. The whole idea of fighting over it is silly.

This is an excellent point. It doesn't make any sense to label Wintersday as a "battle" between Dwayna and Grenth when in reality the "battle" has a fixed outcome that Dwayna will win every single year.
They should make it be a legitimate battle and let players have influence to truly make Grenth win the battle and thus extend the event for as long as Grenth keeps winning.

And thus they can assure that the event will end by taking out the shard drops as well

actually, last year no shards were involved. it was determined by how many people stood within range of the appropriate god/goddess. If more people stood next to Grenth (mostly odd districts last year) then he would win for that district. If most people stood by Dwayna (mostly even districts last year) then she would win. That's what determined whether you got you horns or yuletide cap. I managed to get both for all of my characters.

Actually, weather would be a pretty awesome way to tell people which district is Dwayna's and which is Grenth's.

That would be cool if Grenth won that it would stay winter. BTW when is the finale start and end?

Gaile directly said you will not have to use anything to get a hat, they are free.
People with shards will probably be able to determine which hat people in that district get.

The difference I can see in this years would be:
If the hat type is decided by shard donations as opposed to groups of people standing around an avatar; there will be no way to log into a particular district, evaluate the situation and decide which hat it will be awarded. Sure people will try to designate Dwayna and Grenth districts, but since it wouldn't be possible to tell before the hat is awarded, how will you be sure?
Clever, eh?

Would be cool if the weather did stay icy but not decorated with christmas decorations if Grenth won. Or atleast slowly melt the ice until summer. First have the sky change, snow stop, then slowly decrease the ammount of snow on the ground.

No I don't think it would... I want it to go away when it's over. Besides it's district by district.

I guess we'll find out. Gaile already said that it'll go down in a fashion like that. Either way one will reach it first. And it's not just you.. it's everyone in the district. Don't know if the log is here but it's over on GWO.
