Which shows that the vanity is not about which is "rarer". It's simply the perception that Gold > Purple > Blue. Regardless of the stats. Gold is the "best" (on the heirarchy), and so some people are just going to always feel that if it's not gold, it's simply not as good. Almost as if the color is part of the stats, and to them, a purple max req9 blade is NOT as good as a gold max req9 blade.

Hey, as long as idiots perceive there to be a difference, that's FINE by me.
It means I can get certain nice skins for bargain basement prices.
I have a req 9 Avian axe and a req 10 Fiery Gladius, both purple, both with skins that aren't any different to their gold equivalents.
But at the same time, I do find people's ignorance on this issue irritating.
No-one else is going to see the gold text unless they're shown the weapon in trade, so there's not really even a vanity problem here.
Perhaps that's exactly why ANet have left it this way?
Let the idiots with more gold than sense fritter away their money for pointless reasons?
Tell me, if I had a req 9 inscribable Crystalline Sword that just so happened to be purple, exactly HOW is this different to a gold one?
You can bet your ass that I wouldn't be able to charge normal Crystalline Sword prices for it.
Hell, I bet most people out there would refuse to pay anywhere near even 100K for such a sword, let alone the ridiculous prices that most gold ones go for.
It's positively farcicle.
I think Nightfall more than any previous chapter has highlighted the stupidity of the masses in regards to these things.
As has been mentioned, before Nightfall, purple weapons with perfect inscriptions were highly unlikely. This meant that there was a purpose to the colour grading system. Purple weapons in general WERE inferior.
That difference has gone, yet the opinions on which is better persist.

Exactly, and I'll be playing on this stupidity when I buy a beautiful cheap purple elemental sword. One man's junk is my gold mine.

i truly believe that the reasons for price differences are psychological. if you choose to use the word "vanity", that would imply that it is strictly appearance related. if it is in fact appearance, no one is able to see the stats of a gold or purple item except for the skin. since the skin is the only feature of a weapon other players area able to see, i dont understand why a purple item would sell for so much less then a gold with the equivalent stats. its all very strange and incomprehensible to me.

Updates and new campaigns can, at first suprisingly, then later predictably instantaneously change the public view of items. It is a wonder why the new inscription system in Nightfall hasn't affected the public view of gold>purple>blue>white; though I can understand why this hierarchy still applies to prophecy and factions items, since the inscription system does not apply to them.
The idea of perfect low req blue or purple items being actually rarer than gold items is plausible, in fact true (boy if i ever get one of those i'm selling top dollar no matter what ppl say) Anyways, in conclusion it's just the perception of the item by the consumers that sets the price on the item; which brings me to another point: why is there such a thing as "price check"? Why is there even a guide on how much items are in the game? (excluding the items pertaining to traders, since the traders give us some sort of idea on how much crafting materials and etc are worth through the supply and demand method) Why is it that this mod or that green is 5k or 50k? Should the price not be negotiable between the buyer and seller? This price checking items like mods weps and shields cause the overfarming of one green or another. When a green is overfarmed, it's price declines and Anet tries to make it more valuable by nerfing the solo builds designed to farm the certain boss and thus trying to limit the number of that particular green in the game= rarity is increased. I would say Anet would not have to do this if the price set by the community on non-trader relevant items did not exist. This way the price is agreed upon by the buyer and seller, not by the PC on Guru.

I can buy a plain white shirt for say $5 at some random store. Or I could go to foot locker and buy a plain white shirt BUT the tag says foot locker on it for $15. Nobody knows the difference but me, yet I find that foor locker is more popular then a random store. Same thing with weapons. I could have a blue 15^50 sword, but I'd rather have a gold 15^50 sword because I know it's more rare.

For those that have been playing long enough to remember ... gold items actually used to say "rare" (insert favorite item) when they were dropped. Call it early conditioning to think gold meant better=p
I for one would like them to go back to saying rare since when you open around 8 thousand chests ... gold items become damn rare.

Because golden letters look rarer and cooler than blue and purple.
And I must admit that when I'm looking for a weapon I always want a golden, even if there's a player offering a perfect purple.;P

Wanna know something else that will blow your mind?
A blue 15^50 IS more powerful because people are more likely to personalize the crappy cheap Walmart brand Storm Bow.

For some items, the skin used depends on the colour.
Elonian Daggers are a case in point - the blue version is just a curved blade; the purple version has a couple of holes in it and the gold version has the 2 holes, a couple of notches and 2 triangular gaps in the blade too.
I think there's a similar mechanic at work with ancient scythes, with blue=1 head, purple = 2 claws, gold = 4 claws
There are probably others too...
However, for the majority of items, there's no difference in the skin used between blue/purple/gold, so this factor is only a consideration for a very small number of weapon skins.

I don't give a damn about my weapons' text color, as long it has my favorite skin, then I'm fine with it. Like the previous people had posted earlier, its all about aesthetics.

QFT Long as the thing does what I want it to in my build I really dont care what it looks like.
"Woot look at me everyone I've got a uber looking Gold Sword yet my build is purely for Axe, looks really cool when I'm fighting but the damage is crap due to me having sod all in Swordmanship, but dont I look cooooooooooool, here everyone trade with me so they can see and bow down to me"
meh...people obsessed with showing off pixels.....
I've still got my sword from pre-searing which has the identical skin to "that certain one" and makes people go oooh aaaaah and offer ridiculous amounts to buy it just cos of what it looks like without realising you'd do more damage with one made out of toilet roll tubes LOL

Blue things could be almost as good as gold or green, if the right mods are purchased and created. (I've seen it.) Same mods, different name.
I never really found many decent purple items, I have found some really good purps for lower levels (12 and under) but by level 9 Most of my characters have their hands on a max weapon anyway.
I'm not experienced enough to know why skins matter. Rare or not, I care about the stats it gives.

I customised any weapon that I have that I would use... no point not customising and that includes Gold items...
I don't care for colour I care for the "bang for my buck" factor... who gives if its purple the more money in my pocket the better. And yes making staves is alot economical and worthwhile although the skin maybe generic who cares as long as its doing what its supposed to do. I am shop around if theres a Green version I will buy that instead of making it.
Why do Crystalline Sword sell so high even though they have stupid while hexed mods on them? They cheaper than the alternative and no one would know except for you.
So it all reverts back to the perception it is inherently better because its gold or its a crystalline no matter what the mod is.

All nighfall weapons should have this characteristic or nightfall purple weapons should never be max damage.
Aside from the minor inconvenience of upgrading the mods, there is now no 'difference' between gold and purple drops and this makes the whole implementation of the colour system flawed.
