I used to play to beat the storyline. I wanted to go through the game with as many classes as I could stand to play with.

Nowadays, I just play to collect armor and weapons. I farm and spend. it doesn't have to be expensive sets, just whatever looks good to me. Then, after I have a set that I like, I help out my guildies with the ulterior motives of showing off.

Somewhere between option 3 and option 4.

First and foremost I'm a PvE'er... I'll occasionally engage in Alliance Battles for Faction or Fort Aspenwood because I kinda like that... but that aside I steer clear of PvP.... and most of the time.

While I have some kind of vague interest in the storylines of the campaigns... I mostly play it as a collector: of titles, of elite skills (and other skills), of green weapons... of just about anything I can get my hands on. Even if I wasn't getting titles for it I would still want to uncover the whole of the maps... so exploration is another thing. I'm not particularly aiming to be the best (which would be futile, given how many people are miles better than me)... but I want to be as good as I can be...

There are however a few small things that keep me coming back to the game.

#1. Comparison with others. Sometimes I'll team up with someone else who has their own set of heroes.... often just to see which group of 4 is the better. I'm not overly competitive... but I like comparing to know that I've done a good job in setting out my heroes.
In particular I was trying to help another guy get Masters in the Eternal Grove yesterday. In the end we only got one sword (only one tree's singers survived)... but I was more surprised that I managed to finish the mission with just my group after the other guy's group (consisting likewise of monk, MM and nuker heroes) was killed by the south gate, and yet somehow my Olias's hoarde managed to eradicate every single Afflicted that got near the third tree, leaving it at full health. Makes me feel proud... like some sorta twisted virtual father...

#2. Helping out. Folks have said I should be a teacher... which might be ironic considering how much of an arsehole I can be.... But its true that I like imparting my experience to those in need and guiding them along where necessary. It gives me a sense of achievement that I can't get from single-player games... ironically (though the sense of achievement from single-player games is yet higher than anything I get in PvP).

#3. Visual pwnage. Same reason I play a lot of games. Much like I loved hurling a 50ft radius ultimate destructive blast in Morrowind to take out a good portion of a town in one go and watch large numbers of people drop dead.... likewise in Guild Wars there is something hugely satisfying about dumping Spiteful Spirit and Mark of Pain on a huddled group of enemies as Olias's minions charge in and then watching the screen fill with 29s and 34s for a few moments (and naturally the whole enemy group dies rapidly)... or even just SSing a group of Luxon Elementalists in Ferndale and watching the entire group die at the hands of one Assassin pretending to be a necro... It gives a sense of domineering power to be able to slaughter mobs with massive visual display (and a 2ndary class skill at that, not that I couldn't do similar on a slightly lesser scale with Death Blossom)... which I find wholly satisfying.

Thats about it.

So what if they're thinking the same way, see that you're not on and decide not to come on themselves either?

Casual play to escape the real world. I play a lot of different chars, but have a hand full of favorites. For them, I have all the cool armor and weapons they'll ever need.

LOL, I'm with this guy.

I'm a 30 something female. (see, we do exist in the gaming world). I work a full time job and I have to take care of my elderly mother at home. GW is an escape for me.

I love video games, especially RPGs. I grew up in the Atari age playing stuff like the Swordquest series (remember those!?) and eventually moved on to the Final Fantasy and Dragonquest series. I've never played a MMORPG before. I'm on a budget and paying a monthly fee to play a game has never appealed to me. I stuck mainly to the single player console games. I own a Nintendo, Super Nintendo and PS2 and I've played (or at least tried) most of the RPG titles on those systems.

A few of my online friends bought GW and tried to get me to buy it for about a year, but my computer fails the minimum system requirements on the box, so I never touched it. I didn't feel like spending $50 only to find out it's unusable and upgrading the PC is not an option at this time. Well, one of my friends at work bought the game and as soon as I found out I just had to borrow the disks from her. I installed the game and created a char on her account. (She's a 40 something female, so see there are 2 of us out there)

Well, the game ran just fine on my old crappy PC and I was hooked. I returned her disks and ran up to Best Buy for my own copy. We both started with Factions, but now own all 3 games. I team up with my friend from work most evenings, but we also adventure separately and meet new friends (and quite a few jerks).

Right now, I'm still in the honeymoon stage with the game. I'm busy exploring new areas and capping new skills. I don't care about having the most expensive armor or weapon. I care more about the "look" of my character and weapons. I want the armor and weapon that I think has the best stats and looks the best on me. For some classes, I think that the cheapo 1.5k armor looks way better than the 15k one. Ingame money isn't important to me. I'll save up enough to buy the armor I prefer. I don't need 2-3 sets for each char unless her build requires multiple sets, like my ranger.

Well it works out usually scheduling wise, when we get out of school or work.

As it stands we usually only play evenings/weekends.
