Yes, I'll agree that there was a lot of luck to this event (personally I prefer the more skill-oriented dragon and snowball arenas). Still, I'm with Maxiemonster in thinking some people are trumpeting that fact a bit too loudly. Just to play the Devil's advocate: I ended up with 9 top 100 scores over 4 characters. I'm hardly "l33t", but that kind of repeatable result shows that there is at least some level of skill involved. I didn't have any friends/guildmates help me (would be difficult since I know almost no one in-game), and I only raced for about 5 hours over the course of the weekend.
So ultimately I think the top 100 had a combination of both luck and skill (and great advice from people like namkey). Like Maxiemonster said, games like this are an attempt by Anet to build a community. The top 100 finishers deserve kudos, as does everyone who competed.
