I choose "No, but I want my names saved" because GW2 is suppose to be 1000 years in the future. as such will likely have a new lev cap (30) and new attrib cap(300). Obviously your existing characters are long dead... But their names should be allowed to live on and be recreated in GW2... As a legacy link to your past character. But thats all.
As such it will also be a fresh start on funds and resources for everyone.
You will still be able to play on your character in original GW unrelated to things happening in GW2 campaigns. but have the family name, if you will, living on...

Well, I haven't read ALL the posts, and maybe someone already said this. GW2 yes, it's supposed, if and when it comes out, to be a new game, that means another account, new characters, new game engine, who knows.. new servers for it. There are ppl here that already have a few GW accounts and are able to play them all just fine, but I don't even consider taking on another account, and there are ppl who feel the same as me.
For me playing GW is all about the characters, their progress in the game, the XP gained, the $money$ earned & spent. Where will it all go for my cute Undine if I decide to play GW2 ? Not many ppl will be left in GW1 (just look at Tyrian missions after the other 2 campaigns were released), so ... i'll just have to delete the old game from my computer and never remember I ever played the first part of it?
NO NO NO! I don't want that !! And ... I don't even think it would be in the best interest of the whole GW plan of ANet to release a whole complete new game. I would just play Lineage or WoW if that's their plan, and just because it's another time & sentiments consuming game, I don't.
As a finishing point .. I guess I want ANet to finnally say what they want to do, to prepare our poor hearts for the big news

GW2 has to be a new start. I have played about 3000 hours and in 2 years it's alot more, but to get the best balance in the game all have to start from scratch because IT'S a new game.
Well you will still be able to continue with GW1
Danm no RL before year 2011 - crap

I think people need to take this in slightly better context. The article is from the Inquirer; A site known, indeed renowned for it's bare-faced lies and tall stories, all dressed up to look like news. I don't honestly believe a word of it. I also don't believe that Arenanet would develop a game that will purposely alienate the majority of the hardcore PvE community - a game that would basically trash our old characters being that sort of game. Make no mistake; whether this be truth or lies, transferring existing characters over is winning in the poll by a mile, and with good reason.
But suppose it was true? I don't want to give any of my 5 or 6 main characters up. It's not because they own superleet items, it's not anything to do with any money on the account, it's not even because of the work thats been put into them. It's simply, the attachment many people have with their main characters. I would not give up Rena as she is now if they paid me, nor would I leave Krysten and her Moa Bird to rot. Many people would say the same about their characters, I think you'll find.
And lastly, somebody said something which compared us 'whiners' who would like to keep our original characters to the, (nonexistent,) people who would complain that you couldn't carry your progress from Super Mario over to Mario 64. Thanks, but no thanks. Mario=/=MMORPG, the two worlds are as far apart as can be. Even games like Final Fantasy are nothing like Guild Wars and it's irk. How many Final Fantasy games have you clocked >2000 hours on and enjoyed every second, might I ask?

My primary character charmed her Moa (strider, actually) on her first day, in the first week of GW. I still play her almost exclusively, and Redfeather is still by her side. It's amazing (and funny) how much bigger he is, when I look at old screenshots.
My day is always made when someone compliments him on his size or ferocity, in PvP.
I wouldn't give him, or my Ranger, up for the world.
Slightly off-topic, but I just thought I'd let you know you had a kindred spirit, Cultist. ^_^

It's the same premise, though: Super Mario World and Super Mario 64 were two totally different games. There's no sense to transfer your progress from one over to the other.
Morrowind and Oblivion were two different games. There was no sense to transfer your character from Morrowind over to Oblivion.
Redfeather already mentioned the Everquest and Everquest 2 comparison.
Same goes with Guild Wars: It would make no sense to transfer your character from that Guild Wars to Guild Wars 2. If you don't like that, than don't play Guild Wars 2.
And I'm pretty sure that many people loved all of the Final Fantasy games, each and every second of them. I don't see much else of a reason for their huge success.

I think a fresh start would be best. This would lose many players who "can't live without the work they've done" but it would also gain a lot of new faces. I have friends at work who are reluctant to buy nightfall because they feel like they're missing out or are behind without the other campaigns. Everyone knows they are all standalone but it would be stupid to say that having all 3 campaigns isn't advantageous. I say go with a DirectX10 engine a whole new game (with the same concept) and start from scratch. This is coming from a player with tons of max titles (including ale hound, sweets, KoaBD etc), hero ranks, gladiator ranks, fully unlocked account, and 19 character slots.

it make no sense if you can transfer your chars. If I read correctly it took place 100 years from gw1 (shouldnt your char be dead then?). Also I believe it's like a regular MMORPG (grind game).

Why not just give people the option? If they want to start new - then create a new character with all the new features. If they want to bring over their existing players, then let them.
If there is a concern about high-level weapons, etc. then just take them away when they cross over until they get to a certain part in the new game (for instance, finding a vault later in the game that contains all of the character's previous inventory and storage items).
Best of both worlds I think...

The ability to take my characters cross-chapter is one of the things I most enjoy. If there's no bridge between GW1 and GW2, then all I've done in GW1 is lost. Minipets, everything.
Because I will likely go on to GW2, leaving my GW1 account to waste space on the servers.
They don't delete accounts. Do you think they want a wad of unused accounts on storage because no one's using them anymore?
Birthdays! Birthdays would have no meaning!
Yes, let us play in all worlds.

To be sympathetic. It is not uncommon for people to feel that way though. I should be more curteous.
I know that many people refuse to leave Everquest to play Everquest 2 because they don't want to lose their characters, but EQ2 kicks so much more ass than EQ.

QFT. Many of us have been through many online communities and MMORPGs. After a while you just get used to it.

No, no, no. Another game means another character. Something completely different, something else. As for the names, I don't think I could use the same names again because I have connected them to the current characters.

The Drakken Manifest
I've been thinking about the whole GW1 - GW2 at work (too much free time) and I think I've come up with a solution.
Lets assume that Anet wants players to either use GW1 or GW2, where the ultimate goal is to port everyone to GW2 (not gonna happen due to the large population, amount of time spent, wealth and other factors. i.e. Ultima Online and EQ are still alive and kicking.)
Lets also assume that the majority wants all their characters and wealth to be ported over to the new game.
Lets also assume that a minority would want it to be a level playing field. Start fresh.
Solution
Continental Division:
People that want to start fresh, start in an area of the world that can only accessed by people who decide not to port things over. This area has an approximate size of Tyria and cannot be accessed by people who ported their stuff and characters over. Ala, pre-sear ... only bigger.
People that decide to port their characters and wealth over to the new game, gain access to another part of the continent. This continent is accessible by new players and those that decided to start fresh.
The values of items/loot in the "noobie" area is much higher in value and rarer than the ones found in the "experienced" area of the continent.
Banking system is also separate. If one character from that account is a "noob", it can only access a "noob" area of the banking system. This prevents the importation of resources and gold into the "noob" area.
Importation of Wealth:
The import feature is done only ONCE per character (this includes packs), ONCE per material storage and ONCE per item storage.
Gold:
Exchange rate is determined by Anet
Materials/Rare Materials:
Exchange rate is determined by Anet
Armor:
Each armor set is equivalent to 1 armor piece in the new game.
The armor piece isn't customized. It only becomes customized once a
character wears it.
An armor can only be exchanged with the same AR (ex. GW1 AR35
can only be exchanged for a GW2 AR35).
Runes and Insignias:
Cannot be exported to the new game.
Minipets:
Full export.
Exclusive Weapons (Pre-order, etc.):
Full export.
Weapons:
Uncustomized - The value is determined by the merchant
Customized - One per character, full import.
Another customized weapon will also be ported over but this weapon can only be "found" in the new game with your name attached to it (loot or as treasure). This will add rarity and another dimension to the game. This weapon can only be use effectively by the owner.
Character:
Full import.
Titles:
A new tiered title. Your new title is dependent on the number of attained max title for that particular character.
Veteran Title:
Glorious Lord/Glorious Lady - 2 years
Lord/Lady - 1 year
Count/Countess - 6 months
Campaign Title:
This title is a form of veteran title that shows whether that account owned 4, 3, 2 or 1 of the GW1 campaigns.
Drunkard, Luck, Gamer and Faction titles are wiped out.
Knowledge and Treasure Hunter titles are in. For those of you who are interested on why these two are imported, just think of it in an RPG standpoint ... Knowledge and Treasure location can be passed down.
For those of you that argue that it should be a clean slate, you gotta understand that GW (eventhough its PvP oriented) is also an RPG. If the reports are true and that the new game is set 100 years into the future, wealth, weapons, armor, titles (to some extent) and knowledge can be passed down from one generation to the other. GW2 is - technically - not a new game if its based on GW1 world, even if its set 100 years into the future. There's "history" involved.
Since were also a player-driven economy, resources and weapons prices are dependent on what the players ask for them or how much Anet sets the value of that particular resource/item.
2 Cents

<---doesnt really matter much to me... it will just be sad to leave GW1...with all the time put into it...
...on the other hand anet has learned much about this MMO...positives and negatives..... and a fresh start for them could seriously rock the house....

To me it really doesn't matter to me either way. But I really can't see them importing stuff from GW1.
As long as they don't make me play that anemic looking Stitch-clone class, I'll be happy. :P (from Lilo and Stitch)
