Nothing should be brought over. For all we know our current classes may not even be in the game. There is also the 'hundreds of years' gap issue.

Ultima Online and Ultima Online 2 (eventually) had the same problem. UO's game engine was very old when they decided to create an entirely new game called Ultima Online 2/Ultima Worlds Online: Origin.
The new game is set where past, present and future of the Ultima franchise merged into one world. There was a big uproar when the news came out (1999) that EA feared it will lose its fanbase (and profits) if they decided to go through with it (EQ was its main rival at that time). It was canned big time. A lot of the devs quit after this (they did a ton of programming and was doing limited/closed alpha testing already) and went to work with Richard Garriott in Tabula Rasa.
They tried again, this time with Ultima Online: Odyssey. Canned before public beta could begin (2004). They instead shifted their resources to develop expansions for Ultima Online.
Ultima Online is now 10 years old, its 9th expansion coming out this year and the playerbase is 165k (peak of 240k) and is still profitable to EA. Granted Guildwars is free (not really), the playebase really determines the evolution of an MMORPG ... not the company. With a base of 3 million, our opinions really matter when it comes to new content. That is why they have people that surf the fansites and have community relations employees like the big G. Anet is doing an excellent job incorporating changes that came from the players, I'm sure they'll take into account the consequences if they decide not to (or decide to) allow character ports to the new game.
2 cents.

Names only.
Brining anything else wouldn't fit, IMO.
It would be nice to bring stuff like mini pets over..but thats about it.

I have no real opinion and could really care less. I just hope progress is made and there is new technology rather then just using a staff sword and bow. I would like to see some sort of gun appear but who knows.

Ok now you raise a good point.
What if these guys are pulling a War Craft / Star Craft type of deal and will continue to develop and build on the old version of GW in dark age type style and create a new future based setting with guns and whatnot.
Personally I hope the developers will not abandon GW and continue to create better and better chapters for at least a few more years, but I guess everything cant last forever. With so many "getting bored" with the current situation and voicing their opinions about that they will have more sway over investors than the few who voice their "fan boy" opinion about the game.
However for the current ADD generation of gamers. What could the next game offer, besides improvements that could be applied to this game, that would make it any different from the current game or others like it. I would say the new game will be different but the same.
After the first few hundred thousand out of millions crash their way through in 2 days, they will farm it out in a month, then have done it all over again with every single character type and race in a year and be right back to square one. Whining about how they are bored and the game has no content or replay ability. Well ADD boy if you had slowed down long enough to read some of the sun dried bones in the desert you might of enjoyed the experience a little more.
I my self will continue to enjoy Guild Wars till they shut the server down.
So I guess I vote NONE OF THE ABOVE

PvP Titles should carry and anything else that's account wide if possible.
But other than that it really doesn't matter.

Name keeping may be a good thing. If a guild carries over to GW2 I'd want the names to still be recognizable. Maybe for the sake of lore I'll name one of my chars as the great great great grandson of a GW1 char.
|
I think thats a really good idea. We could even take that notion even further. Maybe they could add honorific titles. Like your GW2 char would have the title "Decendent of [GW1 char name]" and it could have higher stages dependent on things you did in GW1. Even better is you could unlock named weapons like "Legendary Sword of [GW1 char name]".
I am really thinking GW2 will be too different than GW1 to make simply importing old chars even possible. This is really for the best anyway. There are alot of things they did right with GW, but they did a few things wrong as well. It's best to just start a clean slate with a new system.
Of course this is assuming that GW1 and GW2 are mutually exclusive games. Which no one is sure of yet.

I want to be able to import my characters AND items. I have 16 characters that I paid for by purchasing extra character slots, so it's only fair to have a way to import them. I also have lots of rare items I worked hard to acquire. I have too much invested in GW1 to just throw it all away. Besides, many other rpg games allow importing characters from previous games (e.g. Baldur's Gate II). If I can't import my characters, then I'll probably continue to play GW I as long as the servers are online. If they go offline, then I may just go back to playing BG II

What would the point be to let GW1 toons in to GW2? It will be a new game with new skill sets, so even if you could bring your old toons they would still have to start at lowest level without any of the high reg wepons or top of the line armour from GW1.
New game means NEW, not just a new chapter.

I like the New Start but look at it this way. Things you Farmed or especially TITTLEs like "Legendary Survivor" <<< Hardest of All or Master Mapper because they will not add more continents me thinks...If they do then whats the point of building it over the first if the Tyria World is not complete. What I should think they should do about it is that, you can exchange data but not bring characters over. What I mean by that is when you exchange GW1 and GW2 Data you unlock something in GW2 like a mini statue or an ancient scroll that talks about your character a 100 years ago and because you have that for your first character you use the scroll on you get limited editions weapons which is determined to what you already have in the first game and titles will go to the first character or the character you choose to have the title in the game so like if you have a Master Mapper Tittle you can only use the scroll only on one character to get the mapping tittle in GW2 and account based tittles, after you use the scroll once it just automatically goes over your account. Thats what I think should happen instead of moving your full fledged character form GW1 and GW2 so you have to start fresh but what you accomplished or got in the first game you get in the second game. Besides about the items thing I am not saying like you have a Drcos Flat bow in GW! you will get it in GW2 I meant you get it in GW1 you get a exclusive GW item for it but you only can do so limited.

There should be another option that says I would like to bring my characters over but will still play if I can't.

GW2 is set hundreds of years in the future, so the obvious choice is NO.
New game, new characters.
Simple as that.

That way there is "evidence" of all of the hard work you put into your characters, but no material tangible items that would give you a leg up on other players.
|
lmao, FoW armor is the same stats as other max armor... that's why many ppl see it as "pointless" so it wouldn't be a leg up as you put it. It would simply be a matter of anet playing with the graphics and stats of the armor to correspond with GW2, they've done harder things before in shorter amounts of time imo
And oh yeah, i agree, just cause some ppl haven't worked for anything such as titles, armor, high end weps, etc... in gw, doesn't mean that it should be "even" for them. However... ive seen the guys with over 1,000 ecto just doing nothing with it. THAT needs to be prevented from entering GW2 at all costs...

This is your first online RPG isn't it?
To be sympathetic. It is not uncommon for people to feel that way though. I should be more curteous.
I know that many people refuse to leave Everquest to play Everquest 2 because they don't want to lose their characters, but EQ2 kicks so much more ass than EQ.
So in the end. There will be many people who do not wish to leave GW if there is a GW2.....but those of us who do play GW2 will be kicking ass in awesomeville! Ahhh-yeah!
