Fresh start. I sincerely hope they do not use all of the current classes in the base GW2, so if you can't copy every character over, then it won't really work. Besides, if you're starting GW2 with all of the same classes and skills, then it's not really GW2. It's just a pseudo-expansion with a new engine. I want to forget that the Ritualist, Assassin, Paragon and Dervish ever existed.

Its GUILD WARS folks.
What will happen to our Guilds?
If only half of your Guild 'migrated' to GW2, then this will effectively destroy your Guild.

it would be nice to have our current names saved, but other than that nothing should be carried over. according to the inquirer article, it is 100 years in the future--100 years is a long time for a creature to remain in their prime ( the point at which our character are basically at). also, assuming the article to be factual, leveling will be somewhat different, so your characters may not be max level, depending on what the new cap is, so there would really be little reason to carry it over. from the little information available, it seems like GW2 will be a bit of a different game.

Nah, it'll effectively destroy Guild Wars.

I think that shouldn't be a problem. It would be one of the most unlikely possibilities that someone would load up GW2 and make the exact same character name as your favorite toon. Don't worry about the names.

If it is a new game it should be called something else than GW2. It's a sequel if they call it GW2. If you can't bring your characters, then nothing from gw1 should be carried over, not the history etc.
SO my view: if it's called GW2, transfer possible. If it's called something else with a complete new setup of characters and whatnot, fresh start for everybody.
It's called common sense.

I don't see why they would make a sequel in the first place if there weren't new features, set up, etc. If there are new features, I'm sure trasnfer would be impossible. If there won't be, than just continue making expansions for Guild Wars I.

I know what you mean but a new graphical engine is a perfect example.

I hope that Guild Wars II isn't a completely different game with a completely different setup. I like the style the way it is.

Ahhh...Yeah, just for that would be dumb. Maybe they could update the current GW engine a bit? They did a little bit already by making foot-steps bump mapped.

despite that I did pick "I will play regardless of import options" I do agree that the players should be allowed to reserve their original names so that their rep does not get trashed by some wannabe that happened to be lucky enough to jack a well-known name...
<---fully addicted to GW yet doesnt play every single day O.o and has read over 700 posts in the "fresh GW thread" (don't know why I read most of that...)

I must be the only one imagining the future being the... future. Lasers and battlesuits. No more rings, you can equip 8 upgrades. Cyber, nanotechnology. TACTICAL NUKES!
But um... swords are cool.

This is way too much speculation.
We won't know more info in to the magazine article comes out, and I suspect we still won't know much about Ch 5 or a "GW2".
I know myself if I can't import / move my character, I know I will be looking at a GW2 with real hesitation.

like others have said, character transfer wouldn't make sense due to "hundreds of years in the future" however it basically puts a date on when everyone is gonna either drop gw and find a new game that wont do this...or pick up GW2.
I know anet will loose ALOT of their players assuming these people continue playing up untill GW2 if their chars/items/titles/armor/etc... is non transferable. I for one am highly content with the current chars and game situation, while this may not be the same situation in two years...I simply think a character overhaul in a sort of transfer process would be nice. I love all my chars and I put great time into seeing that they are "leet." I'd be so lost if i had to basically give that up for an unforseeable future. Remember that we dont even know what kind of game GW2 will be at this point, as the speculation is id assume the cartoonish WoW direction.
Anet has been good about listening to the player community thus far and id hate for things to start spiraling due to this matter. It is a serious one however and maybe, just maybe, anet's intention IS to flush out the old and bring in the new, potential players. If so:
GG anet-at least a few hundred thousand peeps=gone
if any other games prepare for this "doomsday" if it comes, I personally will start over on a completely new genre of games
And one last thing... for the over a hundred years in the future.... could we say use an water ele and like cryo freeze our chars? /sarcasm or even being serious somehow bring our chars back from the mists when they died to live in GW2? ^^
but really, if you think about it theres gotta be some way that IF they wanted to we could take at least our old chars and their armor. It might turn out useless, but hey, i just cant see continuing guildwars in any way without my babies
Speculation on class overhauls remains at just a huge expansion of what we already have and possible technological incorporation(remember, over a hundred years isnt THAT long a time...could still have traditional gw stuff ie:lack of technology)

I put that I would play regardless. Honestly, I'd love a fresh start, but I think I'd also love playing my characters in a new world, better graphics, better gameplay, etc. Either way sounds perfectly fine to me. I'm just along for the ride.

Something I want to clarify, I would mind bring my character over without any equipment. Even if it's dumped in a portal with no armor and some sort of conversion of skills for any possible old -> new system where my work is reflected in someway, then I would be happy.
I be happy to start with net gold value of 0 as long as the aspect of my character comes over.

If Anet announces that character will transfer- I loved GW and would not hesitate to continue playing, buying expansion, and wait anxiously for the next chapter. Like many other i have spent thousands of hours and hundreds of dollars on all expansion and multiple accounts.
If Anet announces that they will not tranfer- To start it all over again is something I would have to look at when released. This would definetly give devoted gw fans a reason to go out and play other mmos while waiting for gw2 which may lure many away for good. Not to mention, Would I devote all the time/money to gw2 knowing they could annouce gw3 and lose all my work again. Its definatly something to think about.
I see advantages to both sides. In a way I'd like to see everyone being noobs again, but I also don't wana lose all my time spaent.....
