Heh, I didn't notice the skin tone. The similarities I see between the two is the Asura's legs and arms (yes arms, weird I know) is close to the Dredge's legs. The Asura's forearms are too big for it's body, same goes for the Dredge the arms are too long for it's body. Well, that's all I can examine right now maybe someone else can find something similar. I wish we had a better ingame screenshot of the Asura >_>

I kinda saw that a little at first. Looking back, I can see the slight similarity...That's pretty funny, heh heh.

Why do you think WoW is so hilariously popular?

It takes every overused cliche and concept and jams it into a nice grindfest. ^_^

You dont have to be good or original to be popular.

So anyone saying that ANET is wasting time on stuff like minipets doesnt have a clue. Unless you have an issue with the artists actually doing what they're hired to do.
Actually, when I said that I did so in direct response to Gaile Gray's post stating that it was a very difficult and time consuming process to make any small change to the Mini-Pets, and that working on the Mini-Pets meant that they would have to postpone every other "cool new feature".

Here's the quote, but the full thing can be found in my post back on page 8, post #153.

If it takes a programmer hours to make these options, I believe there are better uses for his/her time.
So the only reason I said that it wasn't a productive use of time to sink so many hours of work into a silly Mini-Pet, was because Gaile basically said the same thing first, and I happen to agree. Especially since this Mini-Pet is so ugly. lol

ppl who like cute stuff are going to love it. ppl who don't like cute stuff are not going to like it. It all depends on whether the majority of GW players like cutesy stuff or not. Obviously Anet did their "research" and found that most of us do like cutesy stuff.

Read that quote again. She was talking about toggleable sound options of the minipets being time consuming NOT the minipets themselves.

I find it very hard to believe that it takes several hours to turn on and off sounds, but no time at all to make Mini-Pets or to go above and beyond by giving them extra actions, expressions, and whatnot.

Ok let me explain one last time. Minipets are done by the team of artists. Features that you deemed more important such as skill balances, auction houses, etc etc are done by other teams. Since there is no current content for the artists to work on, then how is it wasting their time to make a minipet?

And believe me, I've created 3D models and still do, so I know a bit about this. It should take only one good professional 3D artist a couple of days to make the Asura model. Then someone to skin and texturize it. And animation such as expressions and stances can be recycled with little adjustment. With most of the minipets, all they did was shrink pre-existing models. The only exception so far is the Asura minipet...but still it takes very little time on ANET's part to do this.

As it is a incredibly subjective thing whether he is ugly or cute (and he is cute by the way, and this is what offends those of you running around in spikey black warrior armour with swords bigger than you are) -- is that you can't stand cute. It doesn't work for you, which is fine. Don't activate the key code, just go find yourself a bone dragon or mini-jade armour to compliment your self-image better.

Well, believe it.

Not a good enough comeback? Fine.

Toggling sounds require you to create a system whereby specific sounds (not ALL sounds, but only pet sounds) can be turned on or off. Let's think about that for a moment. How do you TELL which sounds are which? That could be a lot of work right there, depending on how the game is built.

Luckily that doesn't seem to have been too bad, since Anet did do just that. Now comes changing the interface, somewhere, to support that toggle.

This, of course, has created an entirely new system. Better test it to make sure it works.

Now let's compare minipets: Take an existing creature, scale it, apply standard minipet AI routine, make a quick inventory icon, and you're done. Given the number of minipets in the game, and their willingness to add new ones, I'd suspect they have this process down to a science.

Giving them new expressions? A no doubt simple change to the AI routine, allowing for a random chance of doing animation "X" or "Y", instead of just "X".

And, Ernada, don't belittle the job of a character/creature artist (me) TOO much. It's not exactly quick, unskilled labor. ^_^

Nevertheless, the Asura minipet isn't actually an "exception", as you suggest. He was, of course, created as a full-fledged creature for a future expansion, and put into the game as a minipet using the same process as any other creature. Development time for the creature itself has nothing to do with it.

What features do we trade for new minipets? None, I'd suspect. None at all.

And Griff Mon, you hit the nail on the head. ^_^

This thread is less about the mini-pet, and more about where this guy comes from, and if he represents a new theme to come to Guild Wars via. a new race, story, whatnot.

I don't mind cute little things, but when it comes to cute large things that go against the Guild Wars formula, than it starts to itch.

I know. I named my first GW character Hadrian Rhedd, and my guild Rhedd Asylum after him.
I hope I don't get in trouble, but I love Rhedd's Heads, especially the orcs. My Morrowind character was an orc simply to use his cool head.
I hope it's him. It's like meeting a celebrity!

You are SO in trouble! ^_^

Actually, I find it embarrassingly flattering.

You know, I was reading this forum just the other day, and my wife (who did the textures for those MW heads, you know) looked over my shoulder and said, "What the F with that guy?! That just can't be coincidence."

See, you probably don't know it, but your name is also the name of my main GW character's beloved moa bird, Redfeather.

I'll have to tell her it wasn't all coincidence after all. ^_^

Anyway, I'm flattered by the recognition. Glad you guys enjoy my work.

Saaay... YOU aren't the guy on the NWN forums who stole my name, are you?? ^_^

That's because they give us experimental drugs. The video game profession is a scary one. Don't tell them I told you or they'll put me in the "box". Brrrr.

I often use Redfeather in forums, such as this one or the Everquest 2 forums, in fact I think that was somehow inspired by the name Rhedd which I find a very cool name.
It's an eerie coincidence about your Moa bird!
I really hope you don't mind me using Rhedd ingame as a last name for my guy and the guild I'm in. It's only a guild of 3 people.
It was very cool to find out it's actually you! Small world.

Sorry everyone for going off topic. It's just too darn cool!
