was anyone actually whining about how guild wars worked? I considered it something that actually set guild wars apart from other games. The only people I could see whining about the way it works is WoW or Everquest people who just want a higher level cap out of expansions... and to be honest, those are the people a lot of us would rather not even have in the guild wars universe...

I don't know about that, many people here (including myself), have asked for more races, persistant bits, larger PvP combat, UAX PvP skills, etc.
Honestly, the ONLY thing that worries me about GW2 is the increased Level Cap, but since we have NO idea how it will be implemented (will it be cosmetic only, with additional skill points, like now?), I'm not going to pass judgement on it quite yet.
All in all, GW2 sounds fantastic... and I haven't even read the article yet!
(Where IS that PCGamer? March 23 and counting...)

IMO announcing GW2 2 years ahead of time and stating chars are not transferable was a marketing mistake. I mean if it came out tomorrow I'd buy it in a second but alot of ppl are probably gonna switch to WOW or whatever now. I'd be curious to see what the numbers of acive players do in the next few weeks and months-anyone know how to do that? I'll still play cause' I'm a total addict but geez I think they shoulda held out longer.

Yes, thanks to the OP. Whilst he's certainly right that it is often practically impossible to modify a gaming engine in some ways, (his "Z axis" example), it's worth noting that just as often it's an issue of the graphical content design, which, in order to optimize detail, is intentionally designed to be viewed from a limited range of points of view.
I've never seen the GW1 code, but it's apparent quality judging by reliability and performance, particularly the internet communications subsystems, suggests an excelent, extensible design. I wouldn't be at all surprised, if a key motivation for creating a new game was the cost of generalizing the existing databases. Further, the product enhancement strategy planned for the next 2 years seems aimed at minimizing the amount of graphical design that has to be applied to the existing game during that period.
One concern I have is that Arenanet may be significantly underestimating the potential market strength of updates which don't make drastic additions to the graphical database.
