My guess is that you'll have statues or 'clothes horses' that will display your antique armor and weapons. I can't see any other way of having them in the game that wouldn't be unbalancing...

So does it mean that my Hero Title, and Champion Title will be transferred to GW2 as well? Those are the only titles I care about, and I spent 99% of my time in Guild Wars getting them. It would be nice to carry them over with me to a new game.
Can you give some clarification to that Gaile?

I'm looking forward to GW2 as well, and I hope nothing is carried over. A fresh start, a fresh economy!

Obviously, there are many people who wish they could keep their characters. After all, lots of folks have spent lots of hours with those toons, and naturally they become attached.
Just as an exercise, I thought I'd point out a few reasons why bringing characters over to GW2 might not be such a practical idea.
* Artists would be forced to duplicate all the existing GW items instead of coming up with new items - remember, all the models will likely be much higher poly count and larger textures / better shaders, and so they have to be re-created anyhow.
* An enormous amount of developer time would likely have to be spent carefully mapping all the old items to new ones while developing the import mechanism / code.
* The character artists would have to ensure there's a careful mapping between old and new faces. What happens if you don't like your newly mapped face? Special code to allow you to change your face after importing your character then? More special code... more developer time...
* Skill unlocks may be meaningless if significant changes are made to the combat system. The designers may decide to create entirely new skill sets, or fundamentally change the way the skills work. If you import your character but have no skill unlocks, does this mean you may have to run through the beginning areas as a high level character to get those skills?
* Likewise, armor, weapon, and item stats may also be rendered meaningless if the combat system changes significantly. How would a poison bow be imported to the new game if poisoning is removed from the game, for instance?
* Bringing large numbers of weapons, armors, items, gold, etc into the game could have a hugely destabilizing effect on the economy.
* What does a level 20 character mean in a game that has no level limit? Do they calculate the time it takes to reach level 20 in GW1 and give your new character the equivalent? Or do they just make you a level 100 character? Or perhaps just start at level 1 again?
* Other races... If there's a good-versus-evil sort of game mechanism, then the humans will have a pretty significant advantage off the bat.
* How do they ensure that an imported character has a fun experience just like a newly created character? Create both level 1 and level 20 tutorials? Or does the imported character just skip past the initial areas? This puts them in exactly the same situation that they are dealing with in the GW campaigns and are trying to get away from.
What I think many people fail to realize is that their character is largely defined in terms of current GW game mechanics - titles, level, skills, armor, weapons... ALL of this is subject to change in GW2 (and based on the article, it sounds like this is likely), and there just isn't a reasonable way to map content from one game to another in any significant amount (if they only re-create a few armor sets, imagine the outcry if they don't pick yours). It's only practical if two games use the exact same rule-set, such as some of the Baulder's Gate series (AD&D rules).
I'm not saying you're wrong for wanting to keep your characters or anything - but if you stop and consider all the ramifications, it's easy to see why Anet is choosing the path they've indicated. All in all, I think they're making the right decision by not allowing character imports - instead just allowing people to reserve character names. It seems like it would be a huge drain on dev resources for a one-time-only feature, and allowing this sort of transfer might end up compromising new and innovative designs (both in gameplay and art) of GW2.

Edit*
I just saw something Gaile said in the other thread so I shall amend this. She says if you link your GW2 account with your GW1 account and name your character the same as from GW1- it will automatically have all the same titles.

The magazine doesn't say anything about your old GW1 gear. What it does say is "special weapons" you earned in GW1 will be on display in the Hall of monuments and you can take them out and use them. It describes doing quests in Eye of the North to build your hall of monuments in GW2 (if you link accounts). So maybe earning "special weapons" is done by completing quests as part of building your hall. Example, quest reward: complete this quest to unlock a mini norn for your hall of monuments. It doesn't say anything about equipment that you actually used in GW1. That's how I interpret it anyway.
It does explicitly say that GW1 titles and minipets will be on display. Not sure if that means all minis you own can transfer or if they just means ones you have to quest for.

Just a morbid thought. If your Hall of Monuments is built during Gwen, is'nt it a bit like digging your own grave? That being the case, I wonder if you really die(not rezzable death) at the end of Gwen.. Told you it was morbid.
It seems as though I can keep all my titles and stuff, and transfer them onto Shan 2. Special weapons. My first thought that could only relate to green weapons and a selected rare skins such as tormented ones.
Still, two years is ages away and one article does not a game make

However some people do realize game mechanics and dont need to use cap locks. And i really hate to break it to you,but it would not be as hard as you think it would be to transfer a character over. And in 2 ish yrs Anet might realize that. The only hard part to transfering the chars over would be all the skills and those things over. As far as the different types of weapons models and that. hmm lets see there is already gonna be some type transferable and also titles and minis will be transferrable.
See no caps needed to get that point across.

Because I didnt start playing GW 1 untill about a year after it came out, never done all of factions and only had night fall for about 1 month. I think it is good to be able to play a new game, where everything is reset and I have a level footing with everybody else. The reson I didnt do factions is its really laggy on my pc, and NF Crashs in same places. So I need to go to my bros pc or dads, witch means I cba lol.
Anyway. I am looking forward to it. I think I will play as a normal gamer, not trying to reach the highest level 1st. But I will want to be up there with time.

Well, does the fact that your life will end at some point stop you from living your life?
Of course there's a point to keep going. Some people forget that it's gonna be a couple of YEARS before GW2 is out...plenty of time to do plenty of stuff I'd say...

Rurik and his band of merry wammos hadn't done Lina's quest to get a Res Signet...if they had done maybe it would have changed the way the Charr Invasion turned out.

All I really have to say is "meh." GW2 sounds like a WoW clone. And if you can't move characters over from GW1 to GW2... bah. Quite a few people have 1000+ hours invested in their GW1 characters, and ANET wants us to just dump them and leave them to collect dust? IMO, it's a great way to lose half the fanbase.
Also, if anyone thinks there are quite a few people saying "GW is just a cheap knockoff of WoW..." once GW2 comes out, I think that number will increase drastically.
Well, GW2 won't be out for 2 or 3 years... so I'll be listening in on the rumors. If it sounds good, I might get it (I just barely have 50 bucks saved up, but I dunno what will happen to it in 3 years... and I dunno if I'll have the time for gaming in 3 years. Yes, I will be very unhappy if it comes to that.)
Will GW2 have a subscription fee?

Personally, after Gailes response...i NOW am in total favour of NOTHING being carried across -save- character names.
And anything that IS carried over to have no in-game advantages to GW:2.
If advantages are given to the GW2 players that had all expansions of GW1 and maybe 7 or 8 titles maxed and they get _____ bonus. How would that keep things balanced for the NEW-to-Guild wars- Guild wars 2 players?
If the game is being billed as NEW and not a glorified expansion, then imho there should be nothing carried over that would offer bonuses that would allow gw veterans an advantage over new comers to the series, no matter how big or small.
A new game should be a clean slate - names are fine - - viewing what my "ancestor" accomplished in my hall of ladi da - fine. But giving me a better chance of salvageing the gw2 weapon mod i want JUST BECAUSE i got a rank 3 wisdom title in GW1 is unfair to new comers.
No?

If GW2 will make all my time farming ecto's or getting fame (the most important thing) useless, it will be a lot frustrating for me, maybe I won't buy the new game either for this.
