These people who don't pick up white items (or like one guy who posted he will rarely ever even pick up purples) are the same guys who probablly complain about not having any money.
This tip is one of the best ways to help accumulate wealth.

This makes me wonder where you even get money then. I know that 60%+ of my money is from piles of gold and white items. 20% is probably from selling a superior vigor for 40k a while back. And um, the other 20% is purples and golds.
I'd be po' if I didn't sell my whites. I'd be poorer if I didn't ID them.
I'd be broke if I didn't pick them up at all.

Ya if you're just starting out, or flat broke from various reason's of your own doing, there's nothing wrong with picking up whites and id'ing them. Personally every area I farm looks like a garbage dump, I rarely pick up anything unless it's rare, highly desirable, or I spent a key on it ( then I'll pick up the grape to merchant. )
Remember picking up all that junk wastes time, then having to id ALL of those whites wastes 2-3x as much time as picking it up, then finally running to the merchant wastes more time on top of all that. By the time you get done with all that effort, I'm 1/2 way to 3/4 of the way done with another run.
Everyone plays their own way, you're entitled to it by paying for the game. Once you start going for efficiency, or you ran out of inventory space saving stuff like a pack-rat, you start cutting all the little things out of the picture that slow you down. Picking up white items happens to be one of the first things to go.

What ammount of time? It takes like 10 seconds to pick something up.
You realize that they removed the requirement that you wait 30 seconds before iding something aftering fighting like 3 months ago right? You can now id pretty much instantly.
Seriously, the amount of bad information on this thread is baffling. Ask ANYBODY who farms. 99% of the money you earn in this game is by collecting and selling white drops.

If I didn't pick up whites, I'd have plenty of runs where I wouldn't be picking up anything at all.

The truly efficient farmer will pick up the whites and then ID them while running to/fighting the next mob. With time wasted on IDing out of the picture (zomg, multitasking ftw), simply pushing the target closest loot key plus the spacebar a few times and strolling over to the merchant at the end of a run will far outweight the time saved by ignoring the whites.
So yes, I always ID whites once the enemies get to be about level 20. Most of that IDing is done in the explorable/mission zone while between fights. And since the removal of the delay time between fighting and IDing I've also started to ID stuff mid-fight. Because really, what else are you going to do while you have 3+ seconds of casting time queued up?

When I started to play I remember identifying everything. Right now I just sell ALL whites as fast as I can, without identify, next step is identify the rest (blue/purple/gold) and salvage whatever I think is valuable, then sell.
Note some rare materials are white too ^_^ I don't agree with that, Arenanet MUST change the color to Gold, I mean: Ectos, etc, etc.

at 1 second per ID for say an average of 20 white items per merchant visit thats 20 seconds. It is a terrible time drain but I guess its worth it to me to spend all that time for an extra ~200 g.

do the IDing as you're running to the merchant.

ID whites, however, does increase the value of white items by 10-20gp on average.

I really want to know what kind of farming runs you guys are doing if it's better to go do another run instantly instead of spending less than one minute on ID'ing a full inventory of whites. I can understand if the reason is that you don't feel like doing it, but saying that it's not worth the time sounds a bit crazy.

I can't believe some people don't know you can identify white items, man!
I remember a LOT of time ago with my first character in pre-sear, the first thing I did with my first identification kit was indeed identify a white item!!

I remember when I didn't know what Id kits were for. I finally used it on a white item, and when the value went up 3 gold, I was so excited lol.

I had no idea it had any effect on the price at all, and ive made 100s of Ks on selling drops without IDing.
Ya learn something new every day. Luckily, I have everything I could possibly want right now, and then some, so I'm not bothered that I lost out on all that money.

The reason that some people might not waste time IDing their white items are because some runs can be done really fast. I've seen two videos at least of people farming the Trolls outside Droks in under a minute and a half.

On the topic of IDing: does anybody else find it really frustrating that you can't ID/salvage/generally rearrange your bags while dead? It would be a great way to use the time before you're rezzed, and yet it's impossible. Makes me crazy..

Take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves.
On a simple run like trolls, vermin, dragon moss, spiders etc, You will pick up ~1.5k in whites which will become 2k when identified. If people are thinking that 2k isn't worth 15 seconds at a merchant, then I want to know where they're farming that can earn >120k/hr.
