Well so far lets see...

Tyrian Characters
My Ranger could open the chests 2 times, so far no new reset.
My Necro could open the chests 2 times, so far no new reset.
My Monk could open the chests 2 times, so far no new reset.

Elonian Characters
My Dervish could open the chests 4 times...(drops on the 4th were mainly purple and with fewer gold then the previous reset.)
(* i got some more elonian characters but they are not lvl20 yet so there on the 1st chest's available)

Conclusion
The only conclusion i can take out of the above, is that after the 2nd reset, tyrian/canthan characters can no longer enyoy chest resets, these are only available for elonian's. At least in my account this seems to be the only logical explanation.

Sub my Tyrian Monk enjoyed a 3rd reset, my other 8 characters 2 elonian, didn't enjoy anything.

Either the formula is pretty much crazy and changes according to tyrian/canthan/elonian or... ok i give up

I'm still clueless on this as well. So far only my paragon, who had had a period of extended inactivity, has been able to open them a thrid time. My ele has checked the later chests in RoT a few times and hasn't been able to open any of them more than once.

I think that this is super crazy! I guess everyone has to figure out their own particular different rules to go by.

It's prolly just good fun for ANet to create random arbitrary rules for each individual/account lol.

My ranger who opened them for a third time last month couldnt open them again this month. Same goes for my paragon.

I tried the RoT, Desolation and Vabbi chests on my Tyrian monk that has opened them twice before and hasn't tried to open them in nearly two months. Once chest worked.
I tried the same chests on my Tyrian ele that has opened them once before and hasn't tried in about 1 month. All empty.

I give up.

Well, my dervish seems to have access to the chests again (the 4th time 'round) but the money is just awful - 1.5k and purple items from Torment chests. Could there be something in the formula that the longer you wait between opening the chests, the more money there is? (but that still doesn't explain all the other oddities surrounding the chests.)

Ok, I did two quick tests. One Character that wasn't able to open a third time after 30 days from opening the second still can't, making it 60 days with no unlock. My other character that was able to open a third time has been able to open a fourth time, so for her every 30 days an unlock. I don't play guildwars at the moment except for weekend events but not on those characters so basically they were not used for 30 days. For the one that was able to open treasures for a fourth time the gold appeared to be a 50% cut of the first and second treasure and a 33% cut from the third treasure chest and the drop was purple. So I'm thinking chests will eventually just be worthless even if they can be opened again every 30 days, maybe all purlples and no money will be the destination. So back to the formula, it appears to be 30 days and then random selection based on nothing more than a hidden dice roll by the guild wars program.

ok so I think I've finally figured it all out.

On your 4th time to open treasure chests the drops are: original money amount minus 50-75% plus a purple or gem but no change of a gold item.
Now for the Super Secret Formula...you have to wait 30 days without opening a chest EVEN OPENING A EMPTY CHEST TO TEST WILL RESET THE CLOCK.
Mystery solved...case closed...yeah so at the 4th nerfing I only run the easy ones so they effectively nerfed it to death, oh well, it was a fun side adventure.

That's some nice to know stuff. Only problem I have is that it doesn't explain my Tyrian ranger. He was able on his third run to open roughly 3/4ths to half of the chests (info is at home. unsure of exact number).

These darn chests had me so mad that I stopped trying on any character. lol

Not once ever have I been able to open a chest a third time. I am one of the uncommon people who have a Canthan born character that has run all 3 campaigns. I made it through NF literally days before the first chest reset so was able to do nearly back to back runs. I would have been upset had I missed the reset but it seems like I've missed out on these multiple openings as well. So far, with a Canthan character even waiting over 30 days I've got nothing.

Well I got them with all chars the day of the 2nd reset and have yet to have them since....Obviously that is alot longer then 30 days ago

The last time I did a chest run to all of the chests with my main toon (it was I think his 4th time doing this run to all chests) almost EVERY chest was a semi-lousy purple item. I think I maybe got ONE gold out of all of them. So if this isn't confirmed, then I had extremely, considerably bad luck.

I have two 'muel' characters than I hardly ever play, they were able to have a fourth reset. The gold did seem less but the items were all still gold and ive yet to uncover a purple.

My MAIN characters, ranger monk and ele who i play most the time, can't get past the second reset. After leaving them a time and trying again, they still cant open..*sigh* so seems my must inactive characters get more resets o_O

Just a thought.

My main chars that I play with regular (at least once a week) have been able to open the chests every month and some I play only occasionally (maybe not even at all that month) have found them empty.

ie. My ranger has opened all the chests 5 times (last time all purples and 1 ruby), can`t be bothered to run them all again but opened the 3 easiest ones on the mainland yesterday. My old warrior who is taking a long earned break due to me creating a new warrior can`t open them this month.

Maybe some chars are just bugged, glad it`s not mine, so far.

They should just reset the damn things again and put us all out of our misery.

The number of purples you get are directly correlated to the amount of bitching you do on gwguru.
