Exclamation Failure of GW in Asian Market !!!

As topic said, why still other MMORPG games (WoW as example) still appealing to Asian market ? are asians love more grinding and open areas than GW introduce ?
While GW market has big share of MMORPG market in Europe and US still for unknown reasons GW suffer from epic failure IMO in Asian market..!!

There seems to be no shortage of Asian players. Asian guilds are making a slow-but-steady comeback in the PvP scene.

Asians are people too, they're just like us. They hate grinding as much as we do, which is why Guild Wars was popular in Korea. The only thing that has killed Guild Wars' popularity in Asia amongst the Asian PvP community is ArenaNet's apathy towards the PvP community in general. They seem to care for the PvE community much more, which in my opinion, is wrong.

WoW still dominates the market in Europe and US. Sorry but your opinions do not match the facts. Koreans are generally more gaming-savvy than your typical American or European (read: starcraft championships, etc.), and they know when a game is doomed for failure, which is why most of them jumped ship to other games where they can enjoy themselves.

And to be quite honest, the PvE in WoW is indeed better than Guild Wars. The main selling point of GW is its PvP, but because it's sucking more and more, less people are willing to stay or buy it.

I wouldn't say the PVE in WoW is better. It's definitely more immersive and offers more variety, but IMO it's not better. Simply because skills, gear and areas are totally restricted by what level you are and how much xp you've grinded.

I think the reason why GW is not that popular in the Asian market is because people prefer to play a MMORPG that doesn't let you to initially dish out like 50$ for a game. Usually in our country MMORPG here is prepaid, you pay for a certain amount of gametime. GW business model is pay around 50$ first then play. Dishing out that amount for especially students is not very affordable so they would prefer to pay a small amount. And besides there are Asian MMORPG out there that are free and much cheaper so the choices are huge

GW is too expensive for most asians..sure it'll be cheaper in the long run, which i know as I saved up for it. But, buying a game that is more or less half of what you earn a month just isnt that 'feasible.' It hurts our pockets.

This just proves that out of the the 5 P's of marketing, price is undoubtedly the number one factor(atleast in this issue).

Grinding, PVP, PVE etc arent really the problem. You dont even have to think of the niche or something...

So if we're talking about quitting the game, etc. One of the primary reasons is definitely the fact that there are a plethora of F2P Online games, which usually comes from Korea and is localized here in my country; they hold events like cosplays just to promote their game. They give out CDs thru local game mags, which are cheap and affordable. (American Gaming Mags = One day salary. ouch)


I'm just saddened by its relative unpopularity here in my country.

Please do not forget

GW in Asia had other subscription models, they did not pay a one-time fee like US or EUR players. They pay for a time period.

There are numerous other free of charge games that sell stuff over the online store.

A different mentality and different tastes probably spelt doom for GW there.


I personally do not think it is bad, as I abhor the asian love for the grinders so aptly named "Asia grinders". GW is, thanks god, different.

If they try to make GW2 appeal to the Asians as well, who knows, maybe they manage to create a game that appeals neither to PvE gamers, PvPers, Westerners and Asians alike. :>

well it's probably a lot of reasons not excluding the bigger market in wow for buying gold.

wow definitely has a lot more material for pve though (aside from world pvp, not so much for pvp). at least our "ab" has more than 1 map though it's essentially the same game-type.

i definitely wouldn't call the pve or pvp "better" (though i do like world pvp) in wow. it's still based on "make the players do a lot of work to get good stuff then make better stuff so they have to do a lot of work to get that stuff then make even better stuff..." which is what i mainly loathe about blizzard. i'd rather play a game because it's fun rather than getting that feeling like i'm falling behind if i'm not playing. wow blows.

What game, including ones that require subscription fees, don't debut at $50 nowadays? No one is giving away their client licenses for free, even when you have to pay $15 a month. Some games fail miserably in the market and drop in price quick, but I'd venture to say all of them today start at $50.

SilkRoad Online is free to play. You can buy Silk for ingame enhancements but you do not need to play.

Sadly but its true
We asians (especially Koreans and Chinese) got fed with too much grinding MMOs in the past
No leet weapons, no uber high levels = no fun, and when you tell your friends how great the level 20 cap is they laugh at you
Not that we dont accept games that require skills, but the stereotypical thinking that MMOs=grind makes GW so unpopular in Asian countries
Just a little side note, if you play in TW server you'll be surprised if you see more than 50 players in all outposts over all 3 campaigns...

EDIT:
Yeah...another reason is that there are too much free online games in the market that makes them feel silly to pay $50 for each chapter

WoW is different from Guild Wars. Half of the people in WoW are Asians, while in Guild Wars, that number is less than 10%. Why? ArenaNet needs to open up Guild Wars to all of China. Then, ANet needs to combine Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and China into one territory (with different districts like Europe). I'm Asian-American and I think grind sucks. I think that Guild Wars still has too much grind.

People need to buy game time to play in Netcafes, which is quite a popular way to do you gaming instead of sitting alone in your house.

GW's major selling point is no monthly fee (PvP is such a minority), and that simply isn't as much of a selling point in Korea, the land of netcafes and "free" and fee MMOs. Oh and most gaming in Japan is done on consoles.

Koreans especially really enjoy competitive PvP games. Games like Starcraft are all the rage because the PvP is so well designed and supported that competitive play can really flourish and different skill levels can really show.

GW used to have that in the glory days of WM/Evil/Reno. No more is that the case.
