I can't afford it. $50 for the game, $50 for an expansion/chapter, and then $180 for monthly fees. No way, that's $280 a year, just for one game. The monthly fees are more expensive than the 2 games, by 80 bucks. That's just silly.

World of Warcraft is $20 ($5 if you include the free month), and the expansion is $40, which is significantly lower than what you are implying.

As said, playing WoW will convince you not to buy other games, thus saving money in the long run.

Oh I agree, if WoW would have the graphics and interphase of GW, I'd play it, despite the monthly fee! But as it's now it's too cartoonish and I never like to play cartoonish games.

GW2? Nah, it won't be a combination of WoW and GW1. It will be more of GW1 without levelcap, but only in name, since I don't expect us to get much stronger after level 20.

Yeah, get rid of that loot scaling and let an old solo merc keep all the loot dropped. Sharing with the ones I command... Bah!

I don't normally do pay-per-view myself. Then again, I don't even do the pay-to-watch with Cable TV. I canceled cable tv several years back for similar reasons to why people don't play games like that. My question is, do people that subscribe to cable tv feel compelled to watch it every day to get their money's worth (much much more than a game)? If not then it seems like people just don't consider video games to be as worthwhile entertainment as tv/movies (which still appears to be the case with the general population, even though the video game industry is competing very well with hollywood now).

I can understand why casual players wouldn't subscribe at any pay scale. I don't understand why casual tv watchers insist on subscribing to the amounts that the satellite/cable tv companies charge them though, which seems to be common.

Lots of haters on both side...I didn't realize the animosity between both games was so bad.

They're both great games

World of Warcraft is one of the WORST games I have played. My first month, I had to literally force myself to play it. Needless to say, I gave up pretty damn fast.

And personally, I think the supposed high/limitless level cap for Guild Wars 2 is going to be by far the single worst aspect of the game (even if it is purely cosmetic).

But why? if as you say it is just purely cosmetic, then what difference does it make?

GW was my first & so far only MMO that i've played, reason being, there is no monthly fee. I always wanted to play something like Everquest or the like, but I never liked the idea of, I pay $50 or more for a game that I can ONLY play online, but I can't play it the ONLY way I can because I have to pay $15 or so to play a game that I just spent $50 on. If i have to pay every month to play the game the only way it can be played, then the game itself should either be a free download. Then if I decided after I've been playing the game for awhile I wanna take a break from it, I either have to keep paying for a game I'm not playing, or cancel my subscription, which deletes my characters & everything I've done, thus making it that if I decide to play the game again, I have to start over. Everyone that says that's worth it, wanna buy some ocean front property in arizona too?

True, not to mention it proves once again how impatient and dense the gw community is.

I'm really curious as to why all the people who replied to this thread and so obviously hate this game are spending their time on a forum dedicated to that game. Do you just sit in the back corner and wait for an opportunity to complain about a game you don't play? Go outside.

I have nothing bad to say about World of Warcraft because I've never played it. And I won't play it, because I'm just not interested in it. And despite everyone's arguments about the monthly fee, no matter how many numbers you throw out there, casual gamers are still not going to want to pay $15 a month for a game they only spend a couple hours a week playing.

Personally I'd rather not see either game merged. There's beauty in originality, and originality is severely lacking in the gaming community right now. Every game is just a rehash of another that came out a year before. Obviously you can't be completely original in every aspect of a game, but adding a different touch to certain features goes a long way.

And how people can say GW2 will just be another WoW when there's literally only a paragraph of worthwhile information on the game is beyond me. Who knows what GW2 will be like, it's a long way off. I know everyone can't wait to start complaining about ANet and how they ruined GW2, but please, save it for when the game actually comes out.

When Arena net Speaks out about how Guild Wars 2 won't be a WoW killer I admit that worries me. You might as well be saying "our new game will be good but we don't expect it to be good enough to take profits from the competition". Now from what we know about Guild Wars 2 it looks as if Arena Net is continuing the tradition of taking the best ideas of all the other games plus unique new features and roll it up in a pretty nice package. Let's hope they are honestly using that mindset on Guild Wars 2. I don't want GW2 to be a WoW killer, I want it to be Every other MMO killer. I want GW2 to kick so much ass all the other developers just sit back in awe of it's greatness.

As far as the pay to play goes, it's not just about the money issue for me. Sure it's affordable to plenty of people, I'm not made of money but I could afford it. The real issue I have with it is mere principle. I think pay to play sets a bad precedent in the gaming industry. The more Dev's and Pub's see that they can produce a product that can generate constant revenue on a monthly basis while questionably adding more content or less lag for the consumer poses a major threat. More and more companies see that and decide to go the same route. Eventually the consumer doesn't have many options on what game they want to play anymore because they can't afford to pay several monthly fees just to have some variety in their video gaming. This isn't that big of an issue yet, but it will be. As technology advances there will be more and more genre bending and you'll start seeing monthly fees for games outside of the rpg realm.

That's a big reason why I am loyal to Arena Net and enjoy Guild Wars. I truly hope that Arena Net can continue to produce fantastic products so that consumers who pay additional fees will realize how unreasonable these companies really are.

In case you have never noticed with all of anet's interviews, they try to distance themselves from WoW probably so they don't just get labeled. Secondly they always seem to try to keep it civil when talking about WoW, unlike the players on both sides. So in the end it's just more pointless worrying and bumping.

More pointless worrying and bumping? Did you bother to read past the first few sentences of my post? I can understand being modest about your creations and i'm sure a few guys over at Anet still have good relations with some of those at Blizz but that doesn't justify downplaying your product especially when it comes to the competition.
