After GW2 rolls around, I sure as hell would like to see some open servers for GW pop up. Granted, most of them will be shit, but there are always a few that get it right. UO actually becomes a decent game on the right freeshard. Imagine what a good open GW server would be like.

I just have the feeling that they announced GW2 way too early. They should have had it well underway with beta maybe 6 months away or so before they announced it. To do that they would have had to have a team working on it for some time while they released a couple more chapters for GW. Would have kept more momentum and not left a dry spell in between. The way it is now GW is left hanging as is for 1-2 years+. Not necessarily a bad thing, its just I dont expect very many major content additions between now and GW2 release outside of GWEN HM and the bonus pack.

GW has hit the wall content wise.
The rewards for doing the easy dungeons/quest/missions make them not worth doing and the more complex ones require doing them the exact same way each time, and that gets boring very fast.
The bonus pack will keep people playing for a while, but the vast majority of players that have been in PvE from the start are going to leave for other games simply because there is no reason to continue playing.
While I love GW:EN, it really does not add much end game content.
Just a guess here but I believe Anet knew this, and planned the late release of hard mode to drag it out a bit, then comes the bonus pack and eventually we'll get maybe one more update with new skills or skill changes. After that Anet will be done with GW and working full time on GW2.

GW will be around for a long time to come. StarCraft and Diablo are still online. WCIII, The Frozen Throne is still alive and well. WoW did not replace it.
I think if you're asking if there will be a huge population of players forever, the answer is no.

It all depends whether or not people take to the idea of GW 2, and its initial sales. I mean for all I know it could turn out to be how Everquest 2 turned out to be. So it’s really a flip of a coin but I expect a large part of the community to stay with GW 1 overall. So far the plot elements for GW 2, is going to be extremely dark and foreboding then GW 1.

That's partly because MMO != RTS / Action RPG. Bit hard to replace a game with another game from an (in the case of Diablo / Diablo II, "almost" fits in this slot) entirely different genre.
GW2 is going to be the same type of game as GW, just built differently. It's very possible that GW will "die" when GW2 starts rolling strong. However, that's still quite a ways away, so it really isn't something to worry about at this point.

More speculation!
When GW2 comes out, much of the player base will move to GW2 and from all appearances GW1 will have died, but as the shininess of GW2 wears off, you'll see people start trickling back to GW1.

Arenanet likes their Bi annual money flow business model... And I really do think that once GW2 is out we will see another expansion with GW1...
GW2 will build off lore from Prophecies GW:EN... (Rising of Orr Dragon Epic)
GW1 Exp 2 will build lore more out for GW2 Expansion (Restoration, Utopia concepts) {you don't think they are just going to throw away all that early concept work on Utopia?} Think of Cantha Expansion (GW:EN style) and possibly New world Discovery alla Americas (Utiopia)...
Then the GW2 expansion hits that builds the story further off the back of the GW1 expansion in the future...
Basically by doing this they ensure both games continue for a long time to come, and continue to have the bi annual income they have build their business around.
Expect GW1 expansions to Probably be online only (cheaper and smaller)... similar to the Upcoming bonus missions in procurement, and maybe the size of Sorrows with Tombs each time...
Expansion 2 could be several things...- Cantha Isolationist and Luxon Kurzick Canthan Unification... (expansion of city to the south west)
- The new island up north of magamun jungle.
- Pallo Jako rise to power in Elona. (a few new areas in west of Desolation)
- The Corsair Pirates and Utopia (was to be Campaign 4 once upon a time)
So there is a lot of potential for expansion in both games... As to what it may be that is to come. but the HUGE success of Guild Wars can NOT be denied... It had its roots in PvP and evolved into a contender for top title in PvE as well... Now its evolving again to mix the two in a new and unique way with GW2...
Its not over yet....

GW1 is a cash cow that will/must be milked to fund the development of GW2.
No company can go for a year and a half without launching any products. I'm sure A-Net have a strong business case around GW2 and good investors but it's far too easy for them to make quick cash out of GW1, and they will.
I'd expect several new mission packs that re-use existing maps, areas and content, with very little in the way of new skills, armors, changes to game mechanics etc. Whether this will get people excited is questionable, but we'll still buy them. They'll focus on things that are light on development, and probably focus heavily on using the web channel (their online store) to sell.

We might get one expansion before GW2 but that not really mean that they after that do third expansion. There is no real point to do content for GW1 after GW2 is released.

To be honest... I have no idea how well gw1 will survive once gw2 launches...
I think we won't know until after a few month of gw2 being live (and how many play both or pick up gw1 for gw2 unlocks, our how many go back go gw1 + new sales of gw1)
The PC Gamer - Ultimate GuildWars Guide and the GW2 story info (what happens after GW1 - Start of gw2) re-affirms anet's creativity and love what they've done.
Other statements from interview's and dev posts about GW2- Map Warp
- Mixture instanced / persistence
- Keeping a "limited" skill set (may not be 8, but still same concept)
- PvE/Pve-PvP and a separate balanced/structured pvp
- No monster "camping"
- No monthly fee
The above shows me they taking the good elements from GW1 while trying to take what the learned to make GW2 and not blindly "copy" other mmorph's out there.
Just looking at the race selection Asura, Human, Norn (Variant Human), Charr, Sylvan (Plant based humonid) shows they don't fall in the standard human, elf, dwarf, etc trap.
So far, everything I've seen is enough for me to buy the base game when it comes out.

I expect GW2 will offer them new means of deriving income other than just the sale of the game itself.
I would be unsurprised to find Anet selling gold/items/consumable/min-pets and the like to players in there online store for GW2. While this could be applied to GW1 it makes more sense to focus on GW2 for them, though I would have to admit it would be nice to see them selling more bonus missions or Special Repeatable Quests for some small yet reasonable fee to keep GW1 alive.

Noone can really tell what is going to happen but as stated as long as a good amout of people play GW1 then it will continue to be supported. In my opinion though I do not think this will be the case for Anet is a young company. They do not have as many followers as lets say compared to Blizzard or SOE so creating GW2 I think will eventually spell the demise of GW1 because most of the community will be playing GW2. So no, I don't see GW1 lasting as long as Starcraft or Diablo for that matter.
