I want personally to get into PvP at one point, but it seems that the learning curve is not only very steep (due to 2 years of experience not very well communicated to other players and lots of history, from nerfs to complex power plays) but not facilitated for those that, at this point in time, are not part of the "PvP family".
I'll go and spend some more time (after Halloween event) in GWG's PvP forum. (I don't know if it's semantic misreading, but most ads in the PvP guilds recruiting forum are not as friendly as the ones in the PvE guilds recruiting forum ...)

The sense in which you are on your own is that unless you have a group of friends or guildmates that are also interested in getting into pvp, you're going to have to branch out on your own via, guesting, pugging, taing, raing etc. But the same goes for pretty much everything in this game, pve included, its just that the level of difficulty is higher for pvp. For me, I joined a guild way back when who did a bit of everything. They pve'd a lot and they also liked to regularly gvg and they were happy to let anyone get on board and try. There were a couple of people who had formerly been competitive and had stepped back to play the game more casually and were happy to teach.
In terms of complexity, the skills may have changed over time, but the basics of good play have not. To be honest I'm not sure about the resources in the pvp forums here anymore, but if you can dig up older articles I would do it. When you TA or RA watch what other people are doing that make them succeed. Learn from mistakes. Watch Obs. Ask questions. Some people are asses, but a lot of people are happy to help.
The amount of effort all depends on what you are looking to get out of the game pvpwise. If you just want to mess around in TA/RA and get some glad titles then its a lot less work. If you want to causally gvg for fun, you need to find or make a guild but after that its just play and do what you like. If you want to do well at GvG, then the demands start going up fast.
anyway, this is getting off the topic of the thread so perhaps we should steer it back on course before this turns into something else.

There are plenty of pvp'ers willing to teach newer players, i guarantee you. However, the vast majority of people starting pvp "just want to win." In GW PvP you can't just start winning, you have to put a LOT of time into learning the game mechanics (emphasis on LOT). No pvp'er wants to help someone who just want to win, but a good deal are willing to help you learn the game. If you want, i can teach you a lot. I'm not great, but fairly good. Just be willing to put time into learning (ign is on left).
Pvp guild recruitment posts don't have to be friendly. I've seen guilds advertise with "Don't suck" and nothing else. They can do this because most pvp'ers know all the top guilds, and know what they are looking for when they recruit, and most top pvp'ers know each other already. The main site for pvp'ers is www.teamquitter.com btw.
Anyway, /signed.

GW PvP has always been the heart of the game for me, and, even though i know i'll never play on WC level, it felt a lot better knowing that those guys are somewhere close to us, playing the same game; it gave me hope - "who knows, perhaps one day i'll be good enough... maybe, just maybe one of them will notice me on obs someday and say 'hey, didn't we need X for our smurf?' ". now most of them have moved on.
in retrospective someone needs to be fired for the way GW was marketed over the years. GW should've been the electronic sport by now, theundesputed king of team-based e-games instead of just "another RP MMO". (oh, and fire the the person who decided that Gaile should be the only CM for so long while you're at it).
short form: WC3 at PAX ftw! /signed, /signed/, /signed!

It's really sad to see such a game with great match of game mechanics and concept fail to qualify itself in major gaming tournaments. I hope Anet realised how much of a impact they have brought upon the PvP community of online gaming with GW.

Still awaiting Andrew's reply, but hovering to close to 400~500 signatures, from people of both communities, it truly has been a massive effort.
Thanks to everybody who expressed their interest.

The effort has been slowing down, but don't let it! Tell friends, spread the word, if nothing else have them come read my thoughts, or thoughts in the QQ forums and comment, if this is any indicator of what many of you in these forums think of the game then your opinion would definitely be valuable.
Thanks,
Matt
