So i just bought GW, questions
Anyways i just bought prophecies off the PlayNC site and was just owndering if anyone could answer a few questions.
1.) If i make a PvP char straight away am i gimping myself in some way? other than a lack of knowledge about gameplay and such
Thats it really I have made both a PvP char and RP char, but i really only like to PvP no PvE. The reason i ask is because i am not new to this style of gameplay i have many other MMO's under my belt.
Thanks in advance to anyone who replies

Unless you spend the money to unlock skills for yourself from the get-go, you're really going to need to play some PvE to learn the game and to unlock skills.

Go play some PvE first. You can get a few skills unlocked at least and learn about the play style before going against other players.

This isn't an MMO, and you'll be happier if you don't look at it as one. It bears a closer resemblance to Dungeon Siege, Diablo, and other action RPG's. The towns are just 3d multiplayer lobbies.
As to your question, you'll either need to play some PvE (which I recommend anyway, as GW's skill system is rather different from other games) or try the Zaishen challenges as a PvP intro. The problem is that you're going to be seriously short on skills if you jump straight into PvP. One option, if you don't mind spending more money, would be to buy an unlock pack. You can earn them through PvP achievements, but my understanding is that it's a bit of an uphill battle.

IMO if you are just truely interested in PVP then go with PVP. You get some standard skills unlocked during creation....then as you earn Balthazar faction points you can unlock further skills.
If you do PVE then switch to PVP you will have a lot of the game mechanics to "unlearn"
look here for some better info

I am an elementalist if that makes a difference, and seeing as the general vibe i get is to do the campaign. How many hours should it take to reach 20 i know it's not long but an estimate would be aprreciated
I can probably play 20 hours a week on this game

The only downside to starting a PvP character first is that you won't have access to very many skills. Of course, through PvPing, you'll be able to unlock more and more as you go along.
If PvP is your main reason for buying the game, then focus on PvP. PvE is good for learning the basics, the mechanics of the game and what various skills and such do, but beyond that, it won't teach you much about PvP.
Probably the best thing to do is to play through PvE, while continually PvPing as often as possible at the same time.

Ouch! why did you buy prophecies! you should have buy EO:TN and get prophecies at half price..... but thats just my opinion,
I recommend you start some pve, get to know how the skills work, with many mmo under your belt, you should know it very soon and then go to pvp. imho.
believe me its a tough job getting a group in pvp ... people are mostly very prejudice there even if you have many mmo under your belt. words like noob and retard will fly at you unexpectedly.

you must unlearn what you have learned..
different from standard MMO combat GW is..
You've got four slots to play with, so here's a suggestion. Reserve one for PvP and one for trying out and recycling PVE toons. Use the other two for permanent PVE chars to use for unlocking skills and just enjoying the game.

Do PvE first to learn the workings of the game, then move to PvP when you get bored of PvE.

The Elementalist is a great start for a new player. It's one of the more straightforward professions to pick up and learn the ropes with. Play through the PvE campaign and you'll find yourself at level 20 in no time if you do all the quests and don't run past any missions.
Also, once a PvE character reaches level 20 they can take part in the PvP section of the game as well. Once you reach a port, you can hop on a ship to the Battle Isles where all the major PvP arenas are.

Thanks to all who have replied so far, one last thing i would like to ask.
So if i had a build in mind and had a reasonable idea of how to play the game would it not be a bad idea to make a PvP char right off? I mean I am ONLY interested in the PvP aspect of this game, if i wanted PvE i would play Lotro or WoW.
So with this faction rep grinding for skills is that an alright way to gain them?
Thanks once again to anyone who replies

IN MY HUMBLE OPINION
you've bought the wrong pack imho, should have buy the PVP pack if you are only interested in PvP, which give you instant pvp play with all the skills unlocked, now you can't go to HA without having the map on your map, and also skill-less.
you could have bought the pvp pack, go to wiki, read up some build, test your skills at Random arena and go on from there imho. they also have the pvp kit now, read for more info here.
