I have noticed that lag is becoming more and more of a problem in the game. I think it is time to upgrade the servers but the problem with that is that upgrades cost money and I imagine a large part of their resources are going towards GW2. I have no idea on their budget or the way their servers work but I can't bring myself to believe that they have adequately scaled up the servers. Granted I have no idea how many hops I have to make to connect or what sort of bottlenecks I'm encountering as I go, but at the same time I have very little latency with other connections, including many in mainland China.(I'm located in the US) I don't think it is worth quitting yet but if it continues to be a problem I might look elsewhere, not that that amounts to much since ANet already has my money and could care less whether I continue to play or not.

Actually I know how to test this against other comparable connections. I'll write down the server IP next time I connect and run a visual trace route. This will show me how many hops, what networks I'm passing through and the latency at each node. Then I'll check these results against other servers within the same geographical area and we'll see whether it is server side or not.

That was actually pretty easy and fast. Ok this is what I found. It takes me 16 hops to hit Arena Net's server. all the ping rates on all the nodes are within acceptable tolerance, between 8-20ms, until I get to node 13 in Los Angeles. That's when I hit a bottleneck 181ms. I tested this information against another texas based server alamo.com. It takes the same number of hops 16 but it skips over Los Angeles and the ping times are nominal. I intend to do further testing with different servers both Arena Net and other texas based servers but so far I am inclined to believe it is a bottleneck at some point along the route as opposed to a real problem with Arena Net. So I suppose I have to retract my earlier statement pending further testing. anyone that wants to see the traceroute info themselves can contact me via PM and I'll send it to them.

Frustrating sometimes when I have to do escort quests and I'm 90% there before my guy lags into a frozen state before getting disconnected. Or when I rubberband into a mob when I'm running past them. It's like you're running with -43,-37,-50,-39 damage in a constant stream past some Ettins and then boom, your inside some mob. Bleh.

I'm on a 1MB connection and I'm rarely above 120 ping. Now that we can change servers freely, if it truly ISN'T your connection, just find a server that doesn't lag.

I did, but then again, I'd rather get a wired ethernet connection and throw away the wireless network adapter 2.4GHz then give up GW<3<3

I've been playing Guild Wars for 1.5 years now with a constant FPS range of 2-15, (I have a old computer), So when I lag, I usually dont notice it =p, except when its a server side 50k Pingage. learned to adapt. Hopefully you'll find a way to get around the aataxes blocking you problem. To answer the question, I wouldnt consider quiiting GW because of lag issues.

I've never had particularly significant amounts of lag... there have been rubber-band moments, but nothing terribly crucial.

Then again, I've played Diablo 2 on USEast. You don't know what lag is until you've seen that...

If everyone experiencing lag issues could do me a favor and record the IP address that appears at the top left corner loading screen when you log on I'll take a look and run traceroutes on all the IP's provided, granted this won't show me your route but I can determine if it is the server you are connecting to or not. Those initial results in my other post give me an idea but I intend to repeat my experiment over several days and at different times, both peak usage and off peak times. This should give us some good data so we can make a valid determination before we all start crying about how Arena Net's servers suck. I'm going to use alamo.com as my control since it has low latency and is in the same geographical area and requires the same number of hops for me.

Again I would like to add that this the most annoying thing about gw is this rubberbanding effect, just been doing some uw runs, (avoiding the walls before anyone mentions it) and still get stuck behind mobs despite the fact I am not downloading or uploading anything currently.

Makes me want to bite my mouse as my friend used to do, although I dont think I will go that far.

Sort it out ANET!

I played using dialup, lag would wipe me out during the "Holiday" events. During those times, I would only play during the week. Now I have Alltell wireless, 768k, seems to be doing fine for now. Have not had a special event to try it out on yet, though. Guess I will find out then. Lag has only adjusted my play time, not made me quit.

LMAO 2-15 fps?! Dang that's shiddy! OMG I would get a new CPU bro! Your gaming experience would go thru the roof! I got a laptop with bomb-diggety vid/sound card.

I've considered quitting because it runs too good on my PC. My PC is top notch, always up to date and optimised for gaming, so anything that isn't making my PC slow down to a crawl should be considered obsolete and unworthy of my attention.

o man, forget thinking about quitting, I have quit gw so many times due to getting stuck on those two freaking aatxes while trying various barely-viable smite run builds!

Every time that happens gw gets the insta-kill treatment, but I always come crawling back...

As for other lag, I'm on a dorm network so I have like a 90 megabyte connection... no staight-up lag issues here, just that irritating "I'm still running but apparently I'm stuck on those enemies" thing. Not enough to seriously quit, although Unreal Tournament 3 might be reason enough once the linux client comes out.

I whine and moan about lag in GW sometimes because it makes playing SO frustrating. This is the only online game where I have lag issues come up every so often. When they do, they are quite bad and last for several days, making the game pretty much unplayable. Then, it just goes away. Mysteriously. Perplexes me that when I am having 20000k pings and freezing in GW, Err7's and that entire hell for days when this happens, nothing is going on with my network connection if I play a different game or browse the web or do anything else. Confusing, frustrating, but I usually just shake my head or bang it on the keyboard for a while. Sorts ot out sooner or later.

To avoid rubber banding back into a mob, simply just DON'T run too close to mobs, walls.. objects in general. By no means is this the solution, but it helps to keep that in mind. If you guys ever run anywhere, especially the Droks run, then you'll understand how to avoid this.

What usually happens in actual connection lag is, you'll just stand there, you won't be able to move, cast spells or anything. You can turn around on the spot but that's pretty much all you can do... THAT'S lag.

With that granted... it does lag sometimes, be it your ISP or ANet's servers. Lag exists in every online-game, it's nothing to complain nor "rage quit" about. Learn to deal with it until FO Connections become more affordable

Most rubberbanding is not lag it is because your client is out of synch with the server and can be caused by a number of client side issues. Basically your client thinks you are at point A but the server says you are at point B. This can happen when a packet is dropped or lost and nine out of ten times that happens at one of the many nodes you go through before actually connecting to Arena Net. This can happen if you are on a T3 line living next door to the server because no one, except the terminals on site, gets a direct connection. Lag is often an issue with a bottleneck at some point along your connection. In fact you experience this bottleneck every time you connect to anywhere. Most of the time the amount of information you are receiving is so small that you don't notice. The packets are much more dense in information. In other words I can fit a lot more information about how to display a webpage in a packet than I can about how to display Guild Wars. So when you miss one or one is slow in getting there you notice it much more. Arena Net has no control over the route you take to connect to them.

My survivor died on a little over 1 mil XP because of lag. I don't play anymore really. I'll probably play again in the future, but don't feel like it atm. I tend to just visit the forums every now and again.

(I did kinda rage quit. I deleted almost all my characters when this happened)
