GuildWars is not like WoW and will not be like WoW.
We have seen an interview of them saying that.

GW will die before GW2 comes out because its how it works with every other game, Diablo1 before Diablo2 (and 2 before 3), Warcraft2 before Warcraft3 and it goes on.

I doubt they will finish GW2 until the end of next year, and the game wont mantain itself without the constant upgrades fixes.
If they do finish before it dies then i shall take my hat for them and bow.

And by the way, the player community surely will not and will never help the game staying alive. Just look at the posts and you will see, all this "i hate this game, fix it or ill leave it" threads just annoys me.
I consider people who do what they dont like morons (no offense).
WHY DO YOU PLAY A GAME YOU DONT LIKE!?? YOU ARE NOT PAYING FOR IT!!

Most of these players will be posting something and will be loggin in the game in 30 seconds.

Well... nothing lasts forever, I guess.
Btw Guild Wars was never alive. It's just a piece of software, you know. So it won't die - chances are someone will still have a backup copy somewhere

Speaking of servers staying up and stuff... That's way more complicated. I don't think that servers will hit a total playercount of zero anytime soon. I for one can enjoy game for some time without any problem. (I have no problem with aged games, I'm still playing Unreal Tournament daily ^^). On the other hand it's stupid to expect servers to stay up when there's no profit to gain... Considering there's no such thing as monthly payment it may happen pretty soon. IMO they won't let them down before GW2 is out and most likely that they will keep em for a few month even then but don't expect it to be a long run.
My biggest concern atm with GW1 is that most of the team seems to be on GW2 already. It's kinda frustrating to read "I'm on GW2 now for the most part, don't expect much"-type note on Izzy's page.

And as for GW2 itself... My expectations are kinda low. Considering the coarse of changes and stuff they told us about... They seem to have the every thing I like about GW1 on their "gotta kill it now" list. (Sidenote: Yeh, I still like alot about GW1, c'mon and flame me for that)
It's not like I'm 100% sure of it and plan to spend my entire life now raving stuff like "I won't buy GW2!" on forums. After all this "no level cap" feature may be just my favorite low lvl cap with a twist. The thing is that I don't plan to pre-order GW2 or buy it. The only chance for this game to appeal to me is free trial.

GW1 will be largely abandoned by the time GW2 comes out unless Anet does something to support solo play in the high end game (HM and elite areas). GW2... well that's not a game they're making for players like me (I don't play MMO's), so I couldn't say what will become of it.

Guild Wars 1 will last as long as Anet keeps the servers up, which the odds actually increase depending on GW 2's success. (ie, if GW2 fails, the orginal GW will probably go down as well).

As long a GW1 exists, people will play it. With heroes and henchies, it's not hard to solo, so it's not like you'd need full towns to actually play the game.

No. When a person complains about the game "killing itself," they might very well be blaming the game for their boredom when they're just bored with the damn game.

Now unless there was a good reason as to why it's killing itself, then it's different. But I haven't seen a whole lot of complains here about that.

Will be/ Is moving towards:

Guild wars players have started the "max your main character" mentality. Once the HoM is complete on there favorite character, are they going to do that again on a different 1? Maybe but probably not. They will retire that character and screw around, helping guildies and having fun, on their other characters, logging in less and less.

OR

They have adopted the I'm playing whatever character I feel like today and am waiting to see what unlocks the specific titles will have in GW2, before wasting my life away.

OR

They have no intentions of ever getting GW2.


What is interesting to note:

GW2 is slated to use DX10 rendering, while I am not a programmer, I do know that DX10 rendering is NOT backwards compatible with DX9. Even tho DX9 is backward compatible with DX8. Dx10 is only avalible with windows vista.

Gaile Grey has stated that GW2 will be both DX9 and DX10 compatible so either the programmers of A-net have done something noone else has or they will need to release 2 different versions of the same game.......both are very unlikely.

So be prepared to have a vista system for GW2.

GW1 is a dieing world, that will never totally die, but will be socially void of the player base size it is now after the release of GW2.

I've played for 2 1/2 years. Theres nothing left to do except grind for titles, farm, powertrade and chat in Guild Alliance. You tell people not to rush thru the game, but you can only go so slow and enjoy so much before you realize that PvE / Armors / Weapons are watered down. Hell, 15>50 has always been the best damage mod and it will never change, no matter how many new skins you throw at me. I still play, but the game is old and stale and needs more depth. Alliance battles is the only real fun I have anymore, and even thats getting old. Skill balancing for the sake of PvP killed the potential for a better PvE experience because Anet refuses to separate them.

Yes - It is clear from your statement that you aren't a programmer. There are many games out which run on Dx10 and DX9 - there is no reason why on release GW2 will not support both. Gaile has said that you will not need Dx10 to play that game which will mean you do not need Vista. Jeff Strain has said they intend for Gw2 to be run on computers with moderate specifications - which, by definition, is likely not a Vista machine.

That aside - bring on GW2.

Guild Wars I killed itself from within. Anet has done a horrible job trying to maintain what was a STRONG fanbase 1.5 years ago.

Guild Wars I has also killed Guild Wars II for many, many of the early fans of Guild Wars I

The bulk of the existing fan base didn't join till after Factions. The current player base will get frustrated just like the earlier players did. They just haven't had the game screwed with enough times since they have been here.

Lol at that. Of course DX10 is backward compatible (but I don't think that's even the right word to use). DX9 isn't quite as advance as DX10, so DX10 is always going to look better, but that doesn't put DX9 users at a disadvantage because no matter how good it looks on DX9 it is simply ALWAYS going to look better on DX10.

You are not going to need a Vista machine to play GW2. That whole comment was spoken by a person who clearly hasn't looked at game specifications in a while, since most coming out now can be played on both XP and Vista machines, i.e. bot DX9 and DX10 machines. Do some research before making bold statements that are wrong....

Guild Wars is dead atm imo. Finding PUGs (yes, i prefer playing with PUGs rather then h\h even if h/h is more effective) has become a long and tedious process in some missions. It's a little better in peak hours, but some mission outposts are still deserted. This is something that seemed to worsen after every new campaign/expansion. Which predictably was going to happen anyway.

I've never really been into the mmorpg thing before guild wars, and found it thrilling to see so many ppl online when I first logged on to Prophecies. I remember still explaining to one of my friends that all the blue dots on the mini map are REAL ppl. By the time GW2 is released GW1 will be like one of those ghost towns in westerns.

I doesn't matter what they say. What really matters is what they do. And up to the moment what they've said kinda contradicts with "will not be like wow". I don't think that they're aiming for the next wow clone place but lots of stuff they promise sounds way closer to wow.

I suggest you have a look at Unreal Tournament -> Unreal Tournament 2003 transaction. For like 80% of players it just didn't happen.

Maybe it's the other way around, that GW1 will kill GW2. Lemme explain why.

When Proph came out the game was completely new to everyone who started. Noone was familiair with the gamemechanics etc etc. More important, noone was fimiliair with "the need to run a certain build" to achieve something (remember first 6 months of Tombs (HA)? Randombuilds ftw). Many players just took 8 skills of wich they thought were best and off they went.
Now, as we all know, you more or less have to run a certain build to join a group, both in pve and pvp. More frustrating, trying something new with pugs is out of the question nowadays. And with the exception of a few guild/friendgroups, most organised groups stick to a certain build as well.

If the current skillsystem in GW2 will stay the same, and if many ppl from GW will go and play GW2, then there's a huge problem IMO. Appart from some movingchanges like being able to swim and jump, or the lvlcap of 100 (some say unlimited) the coregame will stay more or less the same then. This will present a big risk of GW2 also turning out into "buildwars", especially with the playmentality the majority of the GWcommunity currently has. The amount of ppl running a FotM is insane.

"buildwars" has made me quit GW and nothing else. Speaking for me personally, the most important task for Anet is preventing that GW2 will result in buildwars as well. How? I don't know, that's up to Anet. Or maybe not? Maybe it's up to us to decide wheter we will all run the same build or not.

Conciderating we know absolutely nothing concrete about how GWs2 will work as a mechanism (i.e free or pay monthly or Instanced or world based), its really daft to speculate on how it will impact GW1.

It may be that Anet turns the tables and makes GW2 pay monthly and one large instance, which will alienate alot of GW1 players. That could lead to them sticking around in GW1 and not playing the sequal.

It may be that Anet makes GW2 much of the same thing and just a flashier, sexier looking GW1 with a better storyline and it pulls everyone away.

It may be that Anet makes GW2 much of the same, but the game basically sucks and people stick with GW1.

People will react to the sequal in different ways and no doubt they will all have different opinions and views about how it works. Some may like the original better despite better graphics in the new one.

Some people might just want nicer graphics and screw the storyline and whether its good or not! We just dont know and its not worth worrying about.

If you enjoy playing GW1 then continue to play. If your bored then go elsewhere and wait for GW2. Its your choice. We dont need scare mongering!

But keep in mind that the HOM will keep alot of people playing GW1 while they play GW2 because they will want the exclusive bonuses. It may be that people create GW1 characters purely to get them into the HOM and then start GW2 to unlock stuff.

That all counts on the unlocks being worth it mind!

I think the two will co-exist for a long time. Just look at Diablo and how long that has been going and its still alive today. I think GW1 has the same potential.

Also consider how many newbies will play GW2 and think "hang on, I might try the first one, just to see" and they get hooked.

GW2 could basically suck and have nothing on GW1!

They have already stated and used as marketting the fact that it will be free to play
