So much for any idea goes, even cat scratch.
All of these designs are well done, with very talented people. They would have gone for a good sum of money on the illustration market.
Now, Anet owns the copyright. As I predicted. And was flamed about. And they paid bupkis for them. GGs.
Specifically...the first is a Narnia ripoff, the second I really don't understand, the third is cool but too similar to the antlers already in existence....which isn't necessarily bad. 4th is great, but doesn't look very cheery...I'd say Canthan new year or dragon festival would be more appropriate. I'd love it though. 5th is INSANE and I'd rock it everywhere. Same for 6th, if they can make it so I'm not bald with it on.

*Note: The hat that appears in the game is based upon a player concept, but will not look precisely like the submitted idea. The art team sometimes makes adjustments to player art to assure the design is compatible with other game designs, and artists also often need to modify a design to properly adjust it to character models. For example, because of how character art and armor works together, a hat that sits on the top of the head will make the character appear to be bald, which naturally requires some amendment to work around. With all player-submitted designs, the art team chooses the winning designs and then adjusts them to fit into the Guild Wars world.
From the Contest page.
Says they work around the bald effect on the hats, but how come all the other hats like the yule cap make characters bald.

By "work around it" they mean they generally lower the hair line of crowns so that, even though you are bald, many hair styles appear like they could fit underneath the cap.

Or... not. Wait and see. A very wintery and very appropriate addition was made to the crown. Sensible, too, given the temperature.
You'll see.

I love the originality of it, and of course it's very well-drawn.
I'm still sad that the ice crown beat out that ice-grentch/goblin mask My god would that thing have rocked in game! I was really hoping for a grentch item since there was Dwayna's Frostie and grentch are just so much cooler. I guess I'll just have to hope that the crown comes out good.
Where's the rest of the designs, people? I love seeing others' work

Wow, I can't wait to see what they do with it then. My Warrior would look great with the crown, but without her hair it just doesn't really work. Would it be so hard just to add some generic hair to the bottom of the crown, to make it look as if they still have something?
Even if it didn't match your normal hair, it would still look a lot better than being completely bald.

I second that.
Just give it a try for once Anet, unless " 'tis the season to be bald like Santa"?

You don't have a very good concept of the illustration market do you? Btw, since these are all a step down from the quality of ANET's concept art, what value do you think they are gleaning from it?

It's not hard to "predict" something that is part of every contest's rules. You were probably flamed because you assumed that ANET needs concept art, and were trying to steal from their poor fans.
Bupkis? hardly. It costs them more time & money to run the contest than to tell the artists to whip up another crown. Gaile already pointed out they had ANET designs ready to go. They just wanted to make a fan compo for us.

All of the designs are interesting but, based on the illustrations shown, I like #6 and #4 the best. The winning entry does look like it was inspired by the crown of the White Witch in The Chronicles of Narnia - maybe that's why it won.

Thank you for mentioning this, although I wish it were not necessary to argue with insulting and wholly-inaccurate comments. It truly is cheaper and easier for us to do the designs ourselves. (Add to that the cost of prizes and prize fulfillment and our costs for contests rise even higher above doing the whole thing in-house.)
The bottom line is: Whether we are talking about weapons, items, or hats -- we can design and implement such things more easily and on a less-costly basis here at ArenaNet. However, we love offering these contest opportunities because it's a cool form of interaction with our community, because we get the chance to offer a chance at a form of "game immortality" to those who win, and because we think it's just plain fun. There is absolutely no profit motivation.

I wouldn't be surprised if ANet spent more time sorting through and judging all these entries than it would have taken the artists to put the art together (which they already had done, so all of this was on TOP of that), but they chose to do it anyway.
I think that's cool as heck, myself. It's a really neat opportunity (all these contests are!) to bring something new and different into the game, and for everyone to have a chance to contribute something. It's a great way to bring some fresh and diverse ideas in. I think it really comes down to if you're bothered by a company now owning a piece of artwork you've done for a contest, then don't do one. A lot of other people, though, are thrilled to have that chance.
Random thought relating to an earlier post - maybe a hat one of these days should have some generic hair under it that's affected by dye. Then people could have a hat, have hair showing, and even make their "hair" whatever color they want. (and now my brain just went south onto a tangent about wigs, i blame the cough syrup!)

Hey there, im not get best artist in the world but I gave it ago. You can tell I had limited colours but I had a Mesmer that was willing to give me a hand in modelling. The first one is the one I entered. WARNING this player has limited colours...lol
http://img406.imageshack.us/my.php?i...zieheadvu1.jpg
Here are some of my ideas i had. Warning they may take awhile to load up
This one makes me laugh every time. GingerBread Head
http://img69.imageshack.us/my.php?im...erbreadnj4.jpg
http://img155.imageshack.us/my.php?i...thsantalg0.jpg
(the above) reminds me of someone elses that got into the finalists. Santa grenth for the win.
alright i love this next one , Moa Mask
http://img103.imageshack.us/my.php?image=moamaskfg6.jpg
cant find my penguin one either. must be in my room
http://img91.imageshack.us/my.php?im...ringhatcp2.jpg
http://img228.imageshack.us/my.php?i...temasksvv6.jpg
(the above) pretty cool ursela masks. Male and female versions are different. females get nice fluffy hood
Heres some of my other designs I didn’t enter, there are more to come. Can’t get to a scanner at the moment.
I have a certain (or lack of) style. alot of the designs coming up were similar...if only i entered them lol. Ok now if they have the competition next year im fresh out of ideas. it is pretty cool the ideas in my drawings but the actual drawing is terrible
EDIT: BTW Gaile i spoke to you on wiki ages ago about my designs.Did the entry ever make it in because i had problems with missing some info on forms and sent another e-mail straight after. Did you personally look at the designs with the art team?
