im iffy on whether i like the idea of GW2 or not. the level cap being set higher is something i thing many people would appreciate to some extent, but 100+ i believe is pushing it. Unless Anet made the leveling system as some people have said, where you get bonuses up to a certain level, and the rest of your levels are just for show. Otherwise, i love all the other ideas.
As for many people complaining that they cannot bring over their old characters, you can still play on the old GW1 servers. I have a level 20 of every class, and have worked hard to get them good equipment and skills. I would not mind starting fresh though. The best experience i had with GW (or any game, for that matter) is when i was a "newb". I was finding new things every day. Sometimes, i would kill a monster, and actually use the weapon it dropped. And the first time i got a max damage hammer, i was so happy i ran around one-hitting Hulking Stone Elementals for at least half an hour. So think back to how much fun you had the first time you played through Guild Wars, and then say how much you (dis)like GW2.
Two questions i have though, i dont know if the dev's know the answers yet or not, but...
1) Is the death penalty going to be changed? cause i would hate to have an xp loss/item loss/find your body like a lot of other games do.
2)will there be other skills? (armorsmithing, weaponsmithing, mining, etc.) I can tell you one thing, if you look at Runescape, probably the most played MMORPG on the net, a reason so many people play it besides it being totally free is that there is so much to do in it. *hint hint*
actually, im not iffy on GW2 anymore. You'll have at least one player here Anet.

I have to admit I was negative at first? No level cap? Sucks.
But then I started thinking, and figured out that since Anet gave us GW, a great game, why should GW2 not be good. Nobody said that the only way to achieve lv 100 is going to be hours upon hours of daily grind. I'm sure they will figure out a way to make it casual player-friendly.
I'm not really bothered by the lack of character transfer either. First of all, for story reasons - GW2 takes place a looong time after GW. Just because my character saved the world a couple of times, killed a god and helped establish a new one does not mean he is immortal Second, I figure there are going to be changes in the system. My guess is not all the professions are going to make it into GW2, so why should some characters be privelaged and transfer, while others remain behind? Also, how would transferring a char fit into the new experience system? Would my 2,5 mil xp suddenly make me level 68? Wouldn't that mean i just skipped half of the game? And what about armor? The developers should focus on designing new armor for the new game and not work on representing the old, say, FoW armor for the people who want to be 1337 right in the beginning.
Besides GW2 is at least two years away. Saying that GW is dead is a bit premature. We still have much to look foreward to.
Also, why would your puchased character slots be transfered to GW2? You bought them for GW1. GW2 is a different game. It's like saying "I've got all these films on VHS, but i've bought this dvd player. Someone should replace my videotapes with dvd discs."

It makes me wonder for the millionth time today, what sort of MORON thought it was a good idea to announce GW2 (with obviously controversial information) on the very same day they announce the next expansion?

Um...happens all the time. Times change and companies must adjust. A/Net's intentions were to follow the expansion every 6-9 months, which the fulfilled for a while, but they fuond that it didn't work the way they planned. They were re-creating the wheel every expansion and it was getting too complex to have the game the way they envisioned it. I think they also learned some lessons that would be impossible to change in the current game.
I think it is great that they have listened to the MAJORITY of feedback on what people like and don't like, as well as looking at the competition and what works for them. Now, they are taking all that information and trying to build a better moustrap. That is what business is all about. Not sticking to a business model that you think is flawed when you think a different direction is the better way to go.

It seems to have been a bad idea. People here have basically given up on the GW Series, and in buying CH4, because they don't like something about GW2 - the races, or the level cap, or not being able to transfer characters. It doesn't make sense that they announced this game with so many features that a lot of people here don't like, because GW just isn't that type of game. And yes, it's completely taking away from GW:EN.

All of those things are what made GW unique, not just the no monthly payments.

Well, let's make a list:
Races: You'll dislike.
PvP: You should like more. UAX, you don't have to join the "chaos" battles.
Easy to get Armor and Weapons: I'm with you. This will be a major factor in deciding whether GW2 is for me.
"Less" Grind: I hate to say NO Grind, cause even now, Guild Wars has some Grind (not nearly the amount of other MMORPGs, of course).
It just sounds to me like people are over-reacting. They hear "new races, and increased level cap", and they think it will be the end of Guild Wars as we know it, when you and I agree there are many other factors that are probably more important.
As long as Anet stays true to the basic principles: "Less Grind = More Fun".
Here's hoping.

Ok, I'll wade in here, at SI we get details about games that are a couple of years away, we get early beta details and 2 years is actually quite early to have THIS MUCH information on a product anyway... It shows there is already a lot of work thats been done...
FFS, we just got more spooge in teh face from ANet about GW2 then in the 10 years (yes, 10 years) of waiting for Duke nukem Forever

After going through a lot of what people are thinking and what I've read so far, I understand how a lot of you guys feel, especially the old schoolers. I would appreciate any feedback on the ideas or opinions I have for the game, hoping that we can help guide ANet into what we want as gamers and as GW Fans.
[:: Big Downers ::]
1)Level Cap Increase
-Problem: A lot of us don't want the level to be boosted, as we like to play different professions, unlike those who play for example a warrior only but have 5 million xp the best weapons out there and 3 sets of FoWs.
-Solution: Leave it as is the lvl 20 is fine, but if you want to put extra lvls that block us from doing certain missions or options (DoA/UW/FoW), because a team requires a lvl 500 even though the person is lvl 20 with same health + mana + attr. points + surely the same skills, then it's basically like bringing a rank system like HA but for PvE. We like our low lvls that allow us to play multiple professions and don't force us to grind or boringly do/redo quests to gain a certain X level ;(.
2)Character Transfer
Problem: As of now there is no option to transfer characters from GW1->GW2
Solution: Why not incorporate the faces from all the campaigns and rebuild them for the GW2 Engine, as the body stays the same. As so, the characters from GW1 would transfer their information Face+Hair+SkinType+UnlockedSkills(UnlessRedone)+Ti tles+XP+SkillPoints. In order to have a minimum transfered, if weapons and armors are possibly remade which I doubt those could also be transfered but I'm sure we'd rather have everything except our armors left to rebuild + weapons then starting at 0. Also maybe if the armor + weapons are once again not transfered, why not keep the armor stats and have matching armors the transfered characters could use. (I.E. I have Judge's monk pants with Stalwart Upgrade and a Sup. Vigor, I end up with a 1.5K Armor with the stalwart upgrade + the sup. vigor so that I may keep all my stats but sacrifice only the esthetic's.)
3)Jumping/Swimming/Diving....
-Problem: What's the point of adding this now, we can't really avoid the projectiles and such or that would ruin the whole point of the game and it would just add a useless function and more programming for nothing. Not to mention the possibility to have exploits popping out through Boosts or Flying Glitches, such as seen in Counter-Strike.
4)Pre-UAX:
-Problem: if at startup everyone ends up with UAX, what's the point for pvpers to go and unlock the stuff. I know it opens doors to pve players, but come on it doesn't require much to unlock all the skills needed on a bar, especially if when you buy a skill you get that skill unlocked or even when you cap.
-Solution: Don't give pre-UAX it kinda kills the whole goal to unlocking all. Also, I believe that it's not really hard to be UAX, as within a few battles in RA already you unlock a lot of stuff. Also, through your progress in the missions and quests, you also obtain elites or skills.
[:: Big Ups ::]
1) Still no Monthly Fees
- To note: No Problems here!
2) Still using the same server and not using realms.
- To note: Thank You for allowing us to live without borders in the world of GW!
3) A revamped engine!
- To note: The only thing I ask about this is please don't change the gameplay or feel of the game, but please do stimulate my visual senses
4) AB+CTF Mode
- To note: This could be one of the coolest features out there for now. Being a big AB Fan, this makes assures me hours of gameplay, once PvE gets borings and I cannot gvg
5) New Races/No New Professions
- To note: this is actually a good thing, as there are enough professions as is and simply adding more skills + the customization of new races is a really cool thing to look towards to.
More will surely come up when I think about em...

Why do people think that? It's a new game, so why all the fuss about having to nake new characters. Similat to how you make new characters in EVERY OTHER NEW GAME you play.

Because in order for you to bring any of your items/titles/legacy over from GW1 to GW2, you must own GW:EN. Therefore, they are linked.

So true! The best days of GW for me definately are the days I was playing Prophecies. Or Guild Wars, because the name Prophecies was only added afterwards.
In Factions, my toon already was lvl 20. So I started like this: mmkay, gotta buy all the remaining Ranger skills, let's have look at the new armors, whatdoyousay, all bosses drop greens now! Then Nightfall: mmkay, there will be more greens at the end game, don't forgot to buy those skills...looks like my Factions skillbar is working here too...wonder if some new farming build will be invented.
Although F and NF added new content, it basically didn't differ from the original game. I finsihed Facrions without any problem, I finished Nightfall without any problem, because I wasn't noob any more. There was nothing more for me to discover, other then new weapons/armor/skills. I enjoyed both campaigns, I really did, I wholehearty encourage something entire new.

Nope, not dropping it quite yet. ^_^
I'm going to keep playing GW and loving it, regardless of what happens two years from now, but I still have to look at this marketing move and just... stare.
I'm wracking my brain trying to figure out what "SI" stands for, but I've failed, sorry.
Regardless, anyone that reads forums or plays games at all knows how gamers are. They're always excited about the Next Big Thing(tm). It's senseless to get them excited about something waay down the road, when there's something you might like them to buy in the meantime.
The effect of overshadowing can't be denied. Just look at this forum for positive proof.
Even ignoring that, look at that magazine cover again...
"HOT NEWS! GUILD WARS CAMPAIGNS CANCELLED!"
Um... yay? I mean, what reaction, exactly, is that supposed to get from a loyal GW fan?
I'd just love to know where their brain was, because I'm actually looking forward to GW:EN, and wish other people were too, instead of focusing on the (rather scary seeming) GW2.

I have read nearly one third of the posts here, and I feel that I would like to express my thoughts as well.
The raised/eliminated level cap. Since it will not affect pvp, I see no problem with it at all. Everyone will still be on equal footing, when on opposite sides of the battle lines, so no worries. As far as pve is concerned, I feel that it is a wonderful idea. It always chaffed me that no matter how many level 24-30 mobs I defeated, I could never be better than level 20. The more I kill, the better I should be, that is my opinion.
GW:EN. So it is an expansion this time, that is fine, I don't mind at all. We have no new professions, that is fine, I dont get time to play all the characters I have now, much less starting new ones. I am fine with that. It will wrap up the trilogy that is Guild Wars 1. That is why I play, is for the stories. New armors, blah, I have max armor, I have one set per character...that is all I need. New skills, some of them are pve only. I think this is great. This means we can have skills in pve that aren't dependent on pvp balance. I see no problem with it. Maybe it is a portent of things to come, where pvp, and pve are equal, but distinct...a man can dream.
GW2. Ok I am kinda ok with this. It wont come out for 2 to 3 years, giving me time to develop the characters that I want to develop fully. I won't feel rushed to get my necro to the realm of torment, etc. I anxiously await further information about this, though i know it will be some time before that happens. I want to know about the races, and whether there will be racial abilities, and racial traits, (I hope there will, because balanced doesnt necessarily mean equal). I hope that map travel will still be possible, I believe that is definitely a positive thing in Guild Wars...no time wasted running across a continent. I hope there is some definite improvements to the economy, including an auction house for ease of trade, and crafting skills so that killing is not the only way to make money. I hope that the skill setup is similar, in that you still must choose a set of skills to ready for battle, but I am unsure as to how this would work in a persistent environment. I am pleased that they will not be abandoning their 'no monthly fee' policy. This is why I play guild wars. Some say they play because of the level cap, or because of skill over grind, but that isn't what it is for me. It is good quality gameplay, for a one time fee. I don't feel that we should pay to play a game that we already own...This point is overall what won me over to Guild Wars, and Ultimately what will win me into playing Guild Wars 2. Mini-expansions, and expansions will also be purchased by me so long as they follow the current method. I don't want to be forced to buy things online, and I prefer to get the product from a brick and mortar store...you know, walmart, or ebgames. I have bought all three campaigns of Guild Wars from walmart. I have not bought extra character slots, because they are only available online...so I hope that expansions and mini expansions will still be available at the store. One last thing, I hope that GW2 doesn't require my information from me, the only thing I have given to arenanet/ncsoft/guild wars, is an email address. I like that.
So I guess for the most part, I am looking forward to both the expansion, and the sequel.

Ok, as inde said, its a way to commemorate your characters from Guild wars... Indeed, it even sounds like you'll be able to use the same account for both GW and GW2 and character weapons and achievements will be placed on show somewhere in GW2
this could also segway Guilds staying together and hopefully will allow communication for a guild/alliance between both games

It sounds good to me, but can someone specify what this "Hall of Monuments" is please? I understand we can't transfer characters, but from the sounds of it, they will live on as some sort of legend?
Can someone confirm/dismiss this for me please?
EDIT: Sorry- too slow ^^ tyvm

I think they figured get the word out now on both now because eventually GW2 would leak out. Let the title wave of the initial reaction pass, then as GW:EN gets closer put more focus on it and build the momentum. I mean, good or bad, look at the buzz this article has generated by including GW2 in it. Now they have another 6 months (?) to build momentum specificially for GW:EN.

I'm not sure I'm please by the idea of a massive level cap (Grind anyone?), the low level cap of Guild Wars as a important factor.
|
You know, the whole "grind" thing is nonsensical to me. I love to play -- being able to increase levels while playing isn't grind, it's fun! It's added incentive, but even without it I'd play anyway. Because it's fun! The OP said that you walk into GvG with full skills and level already in place, so you don't have to play to get a toon to that point, and the OP also talks about systems that allow a low level toon to hang out with the higher level people while still being able to contribute. Where is the downside here? I get a great deal of enjoyment just working my toons up the ladder, and hitting that next level number is just moving up another rung.
I expect that I'll put a whole lot of hours into GW2, the same way I have into GW1, but they'll be hours spent playing, not grinding -- the difference being mindset to a very large degree. If you aren't enjoying what you're doing then for Lyssa's sake go do something else! You'll never convince me that my time spent playing a game is grinding. I enjoy the process too much.
Aye
