The easiest method to beating the bonus is to use the necrotic traversal "trick".
If your not familiar with it, it involves getting to throne with the ghost but flag him outside or just at the entrance of the throne thus causing him to not start the ritual and subsequently keeping the draw bridges raised. This prevents the timer from starting and prevents enemies from flooding the ghost. As such you no longer have to worry about your speed or protecting a relatively weak npc.
Now if your not familar with the necrotic traversal trick you may be thinking... what the heck, how will i reach the generals then? Well thats where the skill necrotic traversal comes in. If you run to the edge of the temple along the drawbridge which leads to the generals sometimes a jade scarab will spawn on the other side of the chasm. If one does, you'll be able to kill it and then use the necrotic traversal skill to teleport either a N/Mo or Mo/N over to the other side. At that point the remaining party members should kill themselves right at the edge of the chasm(most easily done with vampiric weapons) then the party member who had teleported over rebirths them to the other side.
Ta da, your in the area where the generals are without having to have to worry about time or protecting the ghost, now you're free to go ahead, strategize and takle the bonus.
If a scarab didn't spawn on the other side of the chasm, you'll unfortuneately have to restart and try again to get one to spawn.

The necrotic traversal trick doesn't work anymore, the scarabs don't spawn close enough. And of course I'm going for it w/o regards to completing the mission but we can't leave him alone for long enough to kill the generals. The wurms destroy him.

I did it a month ago. Used a flatbow and pulled one of the bosses outside(where the scarabs use to spawn).

Sometimes the boss is within longbow range and you can kill him instead of the scarab

You have to hope it's the ranger boss because he'll stay and try to attack you. If not the other ones run off.
But if you go with heroes all you need to do is get yourself across and leave heroes unflagged. Eventually they'll teleport to you.

I did it in HM and I was able to attack the boss on the otherside. I did have to re-try a few times though

Leave a healer with the hero after killing the waves (so the wurms don't kill him) and then go kill the Generals with the other 5.

Hum, that's certainly the official and intended way to do it. The only downside is (A) you have to be really quick and (B) sometimes one hero monk just won't cut it against a possible 4-wurm seige spike.
Us less-than-leet people tend to do things the easy way

actually the traversal trick works great,it might need a few tries to get the scarabs to spawn but it still is viable,i think i did it 3 days ago

The scarabs don't always spawn correctly but they usually do. There's another trick for those doing it H/H though. Flag your heroes on the hill you were shooting from, teleport out, walk away, and unflag them. They will walk THROUGH the closed walls out to you.

A funny thing happened when I went to do this the other day with my dervish. I had cleared out all the mobs and went to do the boss. I was worried about the siege wurms but I noticed they didn't fire at the ghostly hero unless I was near him and thus I could freely go kill the bosses

It definitely helps if you have a human monk to guard the Ghost.

I've never been able to do the traversal trick, maybe I get real unlucky spawns, so I just do it the normal way. The two ways you can do it are to leave a monk at the spawn to heal/prot the ghost for you, or to kill the wurms.
Leaving a monk with the ghost works, you need a monk who is rather dedicated to keeping him alive. A monk with lots of maintained enchants + dwayna's kiss works well, dwayna's kiss will heal for astronomical values, possibly topping 400 if you have life attunement.
The other way is to overload on damage and just kill the wurms first. Taking a necro with grenth's balance can speed you up a ton, and armor ignoring damage will really shine.

I just completed this, bonus and mission in one go, first attempt. I used the following:
Me: Elementalist/Mesmer
[skill]Elemental Attunement[/skill][skill]Air Attunement[/skill][skill]Blinding Flash[/skill][skill]Epidemic[/skill][wiki]Shell Shock[/wiki][skill]Lightning Hammer[/skill][skill]Lightning Orb[/skill][wiki]Summon Naga Shaman[/wiki]
Olias: Necromancer/Monk
[skill]Jagged Bones[/skill][skill]Animate Bone Minions[/skill][skill]Death Nova[/skill][skill]Blood of the Master[/skill][skill]Deathly Chill[/skill][skill]Necrotic Traversal[/skill][skill]Signet of Lost Souls[/skill][skill]Rebirth[/skill]
Dunkoro: Monk/Elementalist
[wiki]Cure Hex[/wiki][skill]Aegis[/skill][skill]Shield of Absorption[/skill][skill]Word of Healing[/skill][skill]Dwayna's Kiss[/skill][skill]Signet of Rejuvenation[/skill][skill]Dismiss Condition[/skill][skill]Glyph of Lesser Energy[/skill]
(with hindsight, Cure Hex wasn't really needed...could have taken something else)
Master of Whispers: Necromancer/Mesmer
[skill]Spiteful Spirit[/skill][skill]Enfeebling Blood[/skill][skill]Insidious Parasite[/skill][skill]Rip Enchantment[/skill][skill]Power Spike[/skill][skill]Empathy[/skill][skill]Diversion[/skill][skill]Signet of Lost Souls[/skill]
(Diversion was to deal with the monk boss...who did show up. Diverting Orison of Healing ftw! Diversion was used manually)
Henchmen: Alesia + Stefan
Tactics:
Clear the way to the temple shriney place and tell Mr. Ghosty to wait outside.
Wander around the inner edge of the temple until some Jade Scarabs spawn outside...some people claim to have trouble finding scarabs...I've always found some really easily. Failing this, sometimes the first boss can be lured with a longbow... Before fighting with the things outside the wall turn off all resurrects, necrotic traversal and animate bone fiends. Send Alesia and Stefan FAR away.
Tell Olias to Necrotically Traverse over the other side and use a vampiric weapon to degen you and your heroes. Allow Olias to Rebirth. Regen and wander round the fort to kill any scarab pop-ups...but LEAVE any external non-boss group snakes to roam. Unflag henchmen so they wait for you by the edge of the wall.
Take the two internal boss groups one at a time, if you aggro any scarabs beforehand it will allow the O-Man to raise some minions to help. Bonus done.
Now I thought I'd have to zone out and re-do it to complete the mission itself. Then I noticed a group of snakes attacking my henchmen inside the temple. BONUS!!! I turned off all minions, necrotic traversal and resurrects, and went to kill off the snakes. I forced Olias to Necrotically Traverse until he landed back inside the fort and I rebirthed us all inside again.
Collected Mr. Ghost and completed the mission. Easy peasy.
