The OP has obviously never played Everquest which has the most expansions (I think 8 now) of any mmorpg world out there and it's still going strong. Even if the retailers take off the origional expansions Sony just puts out platinum, anniversary and any other cute name selling ALL the expansions and the origional Everquest game in ONE box for $19.99 this is nothing new or something to fret about with GW2, there will always be some package out there to buy for new players or even old ones who didn't keep up.

Its so far off in the future. By the time it even comes out....I'd say it would be around 2012, if not 2014 or even farther. I wouldn't care by then.
But I dunno guys, its very far off but maybe Anet will end the series after 2. After all, they are a new company and this is their first and only product and series really. Plenty of room to grow.

Plus NCsoft is thinking of getting out of the gaming business and moving into something else. So, Anet might not even have a job with NCsoft in 2012 or 2014. Someone else like EA or Sony might pick them up and you can be darn sure they will CHANGE the game into a mmorpg at $15 a month or more to play.

can they introduce new missions, new graphics, or new story?

Uh. Yes. What do you think happened during Nightfall and GW:EN?
The only feasable reason that ArenaNet should make a new engine is to support an Auction House and implement a Z-axis.

Except nearly every FF has been great fun, and pretty good story wise (I'm one of those cool people who like them all) and Cid is a whole lot cooler than Rurik.
Oh and GW 3 won't be happening for another 5 years at least.

O.o I'm agreeing with teh spammy one again!
You forgot to add persistant world too
We know that GW2 is just going to be a WoW clone, persistant world, pet system for solo play play like WoW's hunter, and, erm, and auction house like in WoW too? No wai!!!
Maybe they wont bother to add an auction house just so they can say
'GW2 is a completely different game to WoW cos it has no AH!'
But, OFC there is going to be a need for GW3, because regardless of how well GW2 does on release, Anet are going to screw it over with their phailure updates and game changes like they have done to GW1.
This is how it works - Anet releases an epic game. Over 2-3 years they ruin their epic game with phailure updates. Then they say, 'This game is broken now and ppl are leaving, lets make a new one to get them back!'
And the cycle will repeat itself over and over and over again.

Oh come on! Are you talking about that article where NCSoft talks about diversifying? That's hardly "getting out of the gaming business."
Yes, I think NCSoft should stop making so many titles, and instead focus on their successful ones: Lineage, Guild Wars, City of Heroes / Villians, etc.
But you have to remember, the people who founded Anet were not afraid to leave Blizzard! So, I'd say there's a better chance that Vivendi Universal will buy Guild Wars, than for Guild Wars to become a subscription based model!

In all honesty, with the amount of success guildwars has had, I dont think any publisher would make them charge a monthly fee.

It's had solid success as an RPG but has made a very little splash as an MMO.
About GW3: Time will tell. But if GW2 is successful, then yeah probably. GW2, just like GW1, will get old.

Yes, but they could have made 8 expansions for GW1. They won't because the reality is they need the "new" label to work like their monthly fee, by making older chapters redundant. So GW3 will probably come out after a couple of GW2 expansichapterwhatevers.

They're making Guild Wars 2 due to technical difficulties, the engine Guild Wars is built on is simply too simple to accommodate things that GW2 will likely have- Such as mounts, persistent areas, larger forms of PvP, auction house, Z-axis, jumping/swimming/climbing. etc etc.

I wouldn't mind GW3, aslong as our character & progress can be transferred that time! If the franchise's policy would be to level everything with each next-digit series, I think I'll end up passing.

I don't want to sound negative, but give it up already... what's the point of transferring characters? It stops the game from adding anything really new because you have to worry about compatibility.

I think it will be more of a case of the computer OS changing and not being able to backtrack to get those who were unable to get the new OS on their computer......much like if XvistaX is what is required to play say gw2 chapter 3 (due to the OS maker no longer supporting the previous OS), many people still may not have it, but were able to run gw2 chapters 1 & 2. So they are left with either upgrading or not playing (many may not have the cash/resources available to do so). So instead of making chapter 4, they make gw3 which is vistaXXXX required to play.
This is the scenario I forsee (or that gw2 bombs soo badly they give up and go back to the original gw gametype and make gw3-the return to the original!---like that cola that changed and everyone complained about years ago so they brought back the original).

Aww, man ..... the world ends just when I'm able to collect social security. That really sux.
On topic. Much to early to think about GW3. I'm concerned that GW2 is going to be something that I might not enjoy. If that's the case there will be no GW3 for me. At this point in time I'm not even sure if I'll be playing GW2.
