If people are out there purely to grief then there isnt much any automated filter can do, you cant just resrict everything.
One of the gripes i do have about the name system is the fact you cant use numbers and are forced to have 2 words minimum on western servers, but korean players have access to our servers also and they can waltz around with names like "卍卍장1234장56시109행66간22행복한다량기차┃━┃┃シ".

How about Slayer of Blacks/Asians/Catholics? or Nuke The UK ? Every single word can be used in an offensive phrase and there's no reason for implementing censorship since we've got /report.

I can't make a name with 'jewel' in it because it contains 'Jew'. Does that make ANet anti-semitic?
'Homo' is subject to abuse and slander and it doesn't bother me that it has been blocked.

As previously mentioned, since there are no GM's this is the only way to combat things like this. Granted it's not the best approach, but still. And we all know that /report isn't that great. It certainly wouldn't keep Anet from getting sued.

IMHO
They are simply doing their best to keep out words that may cause a problem. Lets face it Ass can't be used yet it means donkey. Nobody suggests Anet hates Donkeys though, Hummmmmm maybe it is all about the Asses.

My question to ANet is: why do you promote homophobia ?
|
How does this promote homophobia? There would be no need for such censoring if people were intelligent enough to know what would be hurtful and what wouldn't. That said, if you look at many of the names used in game then you know that a portion of the GW community has the maturity of an unripe grape.

It's not ANet being homophobic, it's ANet being smart. If you can't see why they would block such a word, then you're being incredibly naive.

Homophobia means "fear of humans" or "fear of man".
It has evolved in popular media, but is completely wrong, and was bastardized as a derogatory label.

Sadly, there's enough people that lack even the basic socialization, common sense, or simply regard for others. Main reason for that is that in MMO, nobody can punch you in the face.
Go to UK, walk into a pub, preferably one near a football stadium, and say: Nuke the UK. It's fun, try it.
Internet needs /punchintheface. And people will learn common sense ASAP.

How can you use the word "homo" is offensive manner? For example if someone says "you stupid homo", the offensive word here is the adjective "stupid", not the noun "homo". Unless we of course have negative feelings about homosexuality, but isn't that textbook example of sexual discrimination?
Anyone who denies and ignores the existance of homos and forbids talking about them is by definition sexually discriminative.

James Earl Ray
John Hinckley Jr
Lee Harvey Oswald
or perhaps: John Wilkes Booth

You are quite wrong. 'Homophobia' has never meant anything but fear of homosexuals. At least, there is no attested text with a different sense of that word known to the OED.
To be even more pedantic, homo- as a prefix does not mean 'human', as you suggest, but means 'same', dating to the Proto-Indo-European root samos (from which we get PDE 'same'). In fact, there is no PDE word with a 'homo-' prefix where 'homo' stands for 'human'.
The Latin genitive third homō, meaning human, is a noun, not an English prefix.

It really depends on the context. If someone calls me a homo or gay, I just ignore it. I'm not gay, and I have no problem with gay people, so why would it offend me? However, to use it in such a way that implies that homosexuality is wrong is incredibly offensive, and I definitely do not think that people overreact if they get annoyed at those that use it in such a way.
Homosexuals have been persecuted a lot throughout history. They still do get persecuted. And why? Because they're different, and I think people are scared of that. They are confronted by a lot more terrifying scenarios than most people. For instance, I can't really think of anything that would be more terrifying than coming out to my parents, and not knowing whether they'd accept it, or whether they would disown me and never speak to me again. Homosexual people have to go through that every day. I don't think they're overreacting when they get offended.

I can think of a few ways of using the word "homo" in an offensive manner. For example, a lot of teenagers use the word "gay" or "homo" as a substitute for another offensive term, such as "idiot". To use it in such a way implies that all gay people are stupid, or have a mental disability.
A more obvious one, and more widely used, is to simply call someone gay, intended as an insult. It may or may not be true, but using the term as an insult, as something that is supposed to upset someone, is using it in a negative context, and could be offensive. It should only be offensive to people who actually have a problem with the concept of liking a member of the same sex, but unfortunately, many members of the human race seem to be conditioned to react negatively to being called similar, even if they are not homophobic at all.

Agreed.
Using a word of sexuality as negativity is stupid, and should be stopped.
Just another form of stupidity and discrimination in the world.
