But it certainly is a pain that the average player who either didn't save 5 pigs from last year or doesn't have the 100k-500k to buy the 5 pigs, or doesn't want to spend the 100k-500k to buy the 5 pigs are pretty much screwed or encouraged to break the EULA just so they can havethe nice new 'FREE" mini pet...

The thing that really sucks about this is that it's a reward to people who hoard. I've given away tons of minipigs. So have hundreds, nay thousands, of other people.

Good thing we have ArenaNet to tell us that no good deed goes unpunished, eh?

Some players -- I think a lot of them -- would like things to change, to be updated, to be improved. And yet, there are those who complain, for their own reasons, when that happens.

Players would like a new hat. Other players want the old hats. And no one sees that in fact, the hat is just an extra in this event, a traditional Asian/Canthan element of every New Year Festival. It is traditional in both game-world and real-world connotations, and it is not the end-event gift, which is different than last year. If you're familiar with traditional "Chinese New Year" events you see celebrants dancing down the street with lion masks every year. Therefore, the lion hat is a good representation of the influences that bring us Canthan festivals. And again, it's not the end gift. So may I respectfully ask that we move on from complaints about not having a new hat?

The Miniature Pigs: There are just too many of these "out there" in the overall scope of things. Too many people got them in too many final events last year and they have (or at least had) a rather pitiable value. The fact that too many received them last year is the reason that minis are not the end-event gift this year. Changing that will make things more meaningful on several levels. The large number of minis is why the designers came up with a nice (and agreeable) means to balance the Miniature Pigs while rewarding players who did have them and did choose to keep them. For if you think about it, the most dedicated miniature collectors are probably the ones for whom a trade-in will mean something, and they are the ones who may still have them, or will be incented to trade for them. A lot of the dissent about the exchange offer seems to center on elements other than the core factor, and that core factor is this: Players have the ability to acquire a new item, which is something that players request all the time.

The messaging: I asked James if I could give a number. James said that he did not want to give a finite number, thinking that (and this is something that I understand and agree with) in a festival where much is repeated, there should be some level of discovery, some level of surprise. Giving any sort of number at all, even a range, was truly a concession, and the choice might have been, "We don't choose to say; wait until Friday to find out." I'm sorry that some of you disagree with that, but in the end, it's not a decision that you will be making. Despite whatever objections you make, I can safely predict that we will never post an events page with all the details, all the numbers, all the stats. This is because, as a development team, we don't think that "full disclosure" is a necessary or good idea in a situation like this. We feel that having all the info out there would dilute the event and make it overly predictable and empty of discovery or surprise. I personally feel it reduces a fun experience to a session of number crunching, and whilst I greatly respect the number crunchers in our game, I think that the focus should be the full experience, not merely the data. In short, all event information, all the time = less fun factor. (Again, I know some of you disagree. Please do not restate what you've already said on the subject. Truly it is understood.)

With each of these things that some of you are concerned about, we know there are pluses and minuses. We've assessed each of the elements, each of the new offers and gifts and events, and we truly believe that the net for each is a significant positive. I'd like to invite you to try to weigh things within The Big Picture, and to try to see this as we see it. Not looking at one's personal inventory, or someone else's hat collection, but considering the community as a whole.

I will share your comments and your concerns, but in the end, I honestly believe that each of the concerns -- while certainly an opinion to which you are entitled -- is outweighed by the greater good.

The event has begun. I hope that you will enjoy it and I'll look forward to seeing you this weekend.

It's too bad they don't require 10 or 12 to trade in.

This isn't "commie wars" or "welfare wars". If you want something go out and work for it. Get those lunar fortunes or start saving to buy what you need to trade in for one.

I guess you people would prefer to eat a bean burrito and pull a celestial pig out of your asses?

The amount of mini pigs is set. The fortunes don´t give you any pigs anymore. So sooner or later noone will be able to get a minipig anymore. So basically, if you have no idea, what you are talking about, shut the RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO up.

I'm torn...5 pig trade in makes the celestial pig into more of an "elite" minipet that is going to be out of reach for most.

OTH my 2 minipigs have just skyrocketed in value, even the dedicated one...I'll probably keep one and sell one.

Funny how a guildie just got one from a lunar fortune then huh (might have been an old fortune though)? Ignorance is rampant with you, friend.

Even if somehow what you claim is true, it doesn't change the fact that you can earn the money and buy it. Lazy whinners are running loose in this thread. Pass along the warning!

Default My take

Well I will put 2 cents in....what I have enjoyed about GW is the PVE aspect of the game and the ability to play with people from all over and have fun doing that. People have been very nice to my over the years and I have returned the favor by giving away max gold weapons, minis, etc to low level people. I never got into buying high-end things but tried to trade for things from time to time. The downfall has come to GW slowly with the introduction of heroes and is now complete with the whole pig thing. It is bad enough that no one is around to do runs with or help with HM areas but now the game has turned into a horde fest where no one will give anything away because one day it might be worth something. Or it appears that if you try to be nice and help people, which is what this game is suppose to be about, you get properly rewarded. Why do I fell like Cartman with the jerk in WOW killing him all the time for fun?

Not "might", 100% sure:Lunar fortunes from 2007 were updated to Lunar Fortune [Year of the Pig]

The new ones are [Year of the Rat]. So the amount is set. Where is the ignorance now?

I didn´t know that you can force people to sell an item. Or that you can buy an item, that nobody is selling! How many players don´t have even one mini pig? How many players need 4 to get the needed 5? How many have been destroyed?

But sorry, I forgot: Don´t feed the troll!

Frickn' over run with minipigs, everybody and their 2nd cousin has 12, so they don't have any value other than novelty or subject of generosity.

You actually have to play the game (to earn some gold) to get a reward that's now worth something. God forbid....

Well I'm bummed. I was all excited about trading in plain piggies for the neat celestial one. However, I get shafted because I a)didn't get a hundred of the things last year, b)gave away the few extras I had to guild mates that had missed the festival (free bc i'm nice like that) and c) am not going to spend 500-friggin-k to buy more of them!

Anet you state that too many pigs were given out last year, thus decreasing the value. By putting in the collector you bump their worth, which was the goal. You could have easily made it that each person could only get 1 celestrial pig per account (or per char, or w/e) so that people with 1 or 2 pigs could get the celestial. Normal pigs would still be worth more, and the average player/nice person/etc that didn't keep a dozen pigs wouldn't get shafted! If I'm just gonna get kicked in the teeth for being nice, I am not going to do it anymore.

Oh great, now we have a celestrial version of the most unwanted mini pet, whats next Obsidian Pre-Searing Armor?
Save your money, this Celestrial pig will proabably sell for 5k in a month.

I kind of miss having cheap rewards. I got my mini-pig for 1k, and I love it.

But then again, I don't go out and farm either, so I guess I'm playing the wrong game...

Between this and the Mini Polar Bear, it seems Anet doesn't want to reward the casual player anymore. Too bad.

(also, how sad is it the only items worth anything in Guild Wars are frickin' mini-pets.)

who the h*ll cares about the value???? That was not the point and if it was then maybe they should have thought about that LAST year...not this year...

welll guess its time to dedicate those last 2 pigs and put them in the trash bin since they dont have any 'value' for me (dont give a RATsass about another pig). It was really nice that everyone was able to get a gold mini----now. well.....

Anet misses the point again ,and again...............and again.......

miss it a few more times and they will wonder where all there players are.
