Meat Axe and TPike: i 100% agree with you. you've got a strong, solid opinion on the matter. your title for the forums should be "master debator" :P
Ju-On/OP: sorry you got banned. it happened, and it won't be lifted for 3 days, so, it's time to bust out the good 'ol tv and watch some flicks.
Chacheelma: you're not acting any better than anyone else. i read all of your posts in this thread, and i am surprised how no one has said anything to you yet. you're really adding a lot of fire to the flame, and you yourself, seem like you like to flame. just take it down a notch or two and be more supportive than the back-sas. it's not that serious. ^^

Why do they even have a chat filter if they ban people for it anyways?
Just for the record I swear all the time. Why? Because one, there is a filter and if people don't like swearing they can turn the filter on. Two, because if someone is too faint-hearted to handle a bit of language, they don't belong on the internet.
To Cacheelma: I'd watch your stick-up-the-rear attitude in real life; it's apt to earn you a solid beating.

People don't get banned for swearing. They get banned for swearing excessively, or swearing in a certain context. And, to me, the OP admitted he swore in such a way that someone could take offense to.

To me, for a start, I see that as swearing excessively, especially since those three statements were probably within a minute or so. Secondly, the last thing he said, "I can't ----ing believe how piss weak dervishes are", would sound to me like a trolling attempt if I didn't know the context. Of course not everyone in public chat would get the context of what he said. I can clearly see why he was banned, and it wasn't just because he used a naughty word.

It's actually quite simple: GW is ANet's playground. Play by their rules or leave. End of story.

First of all, this isn't about me. I see no reason to be supportive to someone who got banned justly and still has the nerve to blame someone else. Feel free to disagree with me, see if I care.

Mind your own business, will you? Again, this thread isn't about me. And you can rest assure; whatever I get by my personal actions, I'm not gonna cry about it and blame someone else when it's my own fault.

They might as well remove the Filter if people are getting reported with it there for swearing.
But seriously, don't do it in All Chat...

Swearing is not acceptable, because it's not needed and it encourages a form of discourse that can lead to aggressive behaviour. Of course people swearing all the time won't see it this way and the excuse of "everyone is doing it, so get over it" is always convenient.
Language was invented to communicate, and swearing is a bit like adding guns to your means of expressing ideas, it defeats the purpose of communication and turns a dialogue into a PvP arena. You want to communicate angryness and hate? There's sport for this (or a psy if it gets too far). And if there's nothing angry or hateful in your swearing, then why in the world wouldn't you want to drop it in-game? (it sometimes amazes me that we're calling ourselves "civilised nations" and we have to fight for the freedom to swear as if it were a matter of importance, sometimes disregarding with disdain the right of others not to be "hurt" by the swearing by simply treating them of bigotry)
Back to the OP, I doubt that Anet just bans on swearing without having good evidence that someone is bypassing the filter or behaving very aggressively towards other players.
P.S.: this article may shed some light on the point I'm trying to make:

LoL. Nice work Fril Estelin, are you signing up for the tought police when the far left takes over the world....Have you ever stop to think that if people swore more often then there maybe less violence in the world. You have your utopia, I have mine. Mine is built on freedom of expression, yours is built on repression. Should I send myself off to the gulags for indoctrination now?
So, I have indeed learnt a valuable Anet lesson. Turn off chat and swear like a sailor in my Guild channel Now if only I could work out a good build to H/H my way through NF and not have to deal with prudes who can't handle ---- appearing on chat....
And I am definately not blaming anyone for my being banned. I swore about how crappy the game design is and got banned. SO BE IT. I'm just a little miffed at how Anet has chat filter options and still bans people for swearing. It dosen't make sense.

#1: The rules clearly state that swearing is a suspendable offense
#2: You broke the rules intentionally
#3: You got suspended because of it
#4: Accept the fact that you did something wrong and don't do it another time.
IT'S THAT EASY
Whether it's sad when people get offended by filtered words or not has got nothing to do with this. You broke the rules, you pay for it. If you don't agree with the rules, then DON'T PLAY THE GAME.
Capice?

I think this message clearly shows why you could have been banned. You don't need the swearing to be aggressive, as you clearly show. And stop your non-sense of people feeling abused by "----", no one is. I'm very happy that Anet attemps, with their limited means, to tackle the issue of aggressive behaviour because people like you make the game much less enjoyable. Call me whatever you want, police or bigot, I don't care if it comes from you because you showed in this thread what kind of person you are.
The funny thing is that if we were to continue exploring the idea you underline above, you'll end up in a paradox or hypocrisy (the paradox situation being the one where you're not hypocrite of course). Freedom of expression and swearing leads to ask what swearing is expressing. Emotions obviously, so what's the point of expressing these negative emotions, what message are you sending? "I'm pissed off by this" or "I hate that"? So why not say this instead of swearing? Or may be you're not really expressing anything, it's more speaking like the people you know, who themselves swear because everyone is doing it around them? And no one, of course, wonders what they're trying to "express".
Freedom of expression IS an utopia. Racism is not tolerated (well not in Europe, I know that it is more tolerated in the USA and european racists host their website in the USA because of that) and thus absolute freedom does not exist. The right to talk should always be balanced by the duty of respect. Without a balanced approach to communication, you may end up in a world without much sensibility and where everyone will insult each other without really caring (that's the paradox: insult no longer means anything, people are talking aggressively for no real reason since no one cares).
And if you're lookin for a good PvE Heroes build, try Sabway

Only read half the thread, cos it's a fight-off between OP and the Jester guy. Anyways, don't swear in local chat, swear over vent, or rage irl, it's what i do. I get half way through typing if i'm all raged up then think "eh? what's moaning about something in local chat gonna do except attract flamers". So stop typing, and vent rage irl.

I've never understood why people find swearing offensive. I find people NOT swearing offensive (or at least projecting their choice onto me) since I find it a perfectly valid form of self expression and don't feel that anyone in this world has the right to tell me what words I can or cannot say...
Besides, culturally some words are offensive in some countries and not in others. The word "fanny" for instance means something very different in Australia than it does in America.
If you find swearing offensive turn on the chat filters and stop imposing your opressed sensibilites on those who don't give a damn. The only time agree with reporting (to some extent) is when people purposefully try to circumvent the chat filter. But even then, seriously, on the scale of bad things to do in game, does swearing really count as a bannable offense?

Then why aren't you doing it yourself? "We" don't "give a damn" about you feeling offended so stop "oposing your opressed sensibilities" by simply stopping to oppose what we're saying. I mean, if you're telling people to ignore their sensibilities, you should show the example and forget yours, shouldn't you?
I guess that if you're able to show us how swearing is important to communication (and not for keeping you calm), then you've got a valid point. If not, Anet will continue to ban based on aggressive behaviour (but I don't believe the OP than they banned him for "----").
