Gwen, hands down. She's the only npc that we see as a child and as a (young) adult. And without a doubt has the most backstory of any hero we get.

for most popular NPC

Rurik for his famous idiocy
he ranks up there with killroy only because he sucks at even that

Oh, and the Xunlai Agent (though I use the Xunlai Chest, personally).
