Default Spirit of Giving

Since the days of Pencil and Paper gifting to new players has been a practice that many experienced folks have embraced. Those of us who continue to do this, throughout the realms are finding it more dificult to find willing/trusting recipients. Some of my fondest gaming memories have come from either giving or recieving helpful items. Thoughts, suggestions or happy memories are welcome. Do nice things for people.

Guild Wars isn't really a good game to do this in, granted you will get some truthful people...most are just not trustworthy.

But I know what you're talking about, making someone happy with giving them something. But I don't usually find people who don't expect more or don't really appreciate it anymore.

Yeah ive found myself giving items to newbs (or at least i thought they were newbs ) and it feels satisfying. Ive never recieved anything, though, in my beginner days (maybe cause i never asked).

I generally like to do something nice when I run across someone that's less than the usual obnoxious buyer/sellers I deal with day to day.

Yesterday was no different. I was unloading abunch of mods/inscriptions that have been piling up, basically trying to get rid of them quick and cheap. A player messages me offereing a low amount, but I really didn't care and an inventory spot was worth what he gave. He then asks if I had any rit staffs, which I found one that I never use, so I sold it to him cheap. He promptly replies, that that was the last of his cash.

We chat for a while, since he was able to converse at a higher level than the usual riff raff I'm forced to deal with. He indicated he was saving up to buy a minor vigor for his new rit. So I went over an bought him a major vigor, and gave it for free. He was surprised and said he's never met anyone so nice.

At this point I really wish I would have stopped there...feeling good about helping a new player...but then we continue talking.

We start talking about weapon skins, and that I usually don't get into them too much, but it's nice to have a cool looking weapon now and then. He then mentions that he just got bought a cool weapon he was saving up for after a two weeks...a tormented bow.

Oh well, I'll just pretend that I helped someone who actually needed it.

I have "gifted" the occasional stranger, but some people do "look a gift horse in the mouth" (google it if you don't know what the expression means). Some will flame you for various reasons.

Most of my giving is limited to my guild and alliance. There is trust there and people are always thankful, and willing to return the favor.

I once helped someone complete the two 15-point attribute quests in Prophecies and he/she gave me a mini Charr Shaman for free.

That is possibly the only time I've ever been given something, but I used to give free random amounts of gold to people for no reason.

Giving is all well and good, but the problem is that you frequently do not give to someone worthy.

The giving spirit is also what causes the beggars. Those legions that sit around Droks asking for "Anyone spare the money needed for my armor?" all day.

what's wrong with u ppl, u think give away free stuff will make u look good? that's true, but it doesn't help the newbes. say u give some1 a fiery dragon sword, 2 month later u found out he still use that sword and wait for some1 else to give him stuff, what does that tell u.
teach ppl how to fish, instead of giving them fish.

Giving is not always a material object. Giving can also be in the form of knowledge.

I was given a free run to Droknar's Forge by a stranger.
I did not know where he/she would go, I was in Ascalon with my ele level 12 at that time, when I was invited in a party and I accepted, thinking to do some quests.
I appreciated the run so much, I was really thankful!
You rarely find people like that now in the game, but there is hope.

Now I only trust my guildies, I love my guild.

I don't really give items that much any more. Sometimes I save FDS swords during Fronis Irontoe's Lair runs and then hand them out to Prophecies scrubs while my friend stands beside me /pointing and /laughing at them and me, insulting whichever class I'm using (even if it's the same as his).

But these days all I usually do as far as generosity goes is to help people in low level missions, like in Post-Searing Ascalon.

I don't give out free stuff these days unless it's to people i know or are in my alliance. Too many times have i had abuse thrown at me because i couldn't reply to 10 whispers in 10 seconds when i throw up the "giving away free stuff to new players" message. I occasionally help out players in low level missions if i have half an hour to kill but even doing that is pretty rare for me these days.

Most people i've ran across don't appreciate the gift/help and some even throw insults at you when you don't give them more. I'd rather just dump things on the merchant....at least he doesn't complain.

Pssh, no-one uses the Giving ritual in the current meta... it's Spawning Power-tied and as we all know, Spawning Power sucks hard Poor Rits.
